02 01 Properties of Water Lab Report

The document summarizes a student's lab report on investigating the surface tension of water. The student tested how pepper and dish soap interact on water. Their hypothesis that the pepper would move away from where dish soap touched the water was supported. The student observed the pepper clumping and not sinking initially, but moving away and sinking after dish soap was added. The investigation could be expanded by testing small floating or walking insects.

Properties of Water Lab Report

Instructions: Investigate the properties of water by choosing one experiment to conduct. Use the
following lab template to ensure all lab report components are included. Submit your lab report to
your instructor when completed.

Objective(s):
Identify the purpose of your investigation or the question you are attempting to answer. Be sure to tie in
the property of water you are testing.

Background Knowledge:
Polarity and hydrogen bonding are two key factors that contribute to the unique properties of water.

Safety Notes:

• Always have parent(s) or guardian(s) permission and supervision when performing a lab
activity at home.
• Wash your hands before and after handling lab materials.

• It is important to always protect your eyes during lab activities. Wear protective goggles
whenever possible.

• When working at the kitchen counter or table, be sure to protect the workspace from spills and
immediately clean up any splashes or spills.

• All materials in this lab activity are safe to dispose in the garbage (solids) and down the drain
(liquids only).

Experiment: Investigating surface tension

Title: Properties of water lab

Objective: To test how surface tension works with the pepper and dishsoap.

Hypothesis: I believe that the pepper will move away from the dish soap when putting your
finger on the water.

Variables:
• Independent Variable: The water

• Dependent Variable: The pepper

• Controlled Variable: The dishsoap

Materials:
dish soap
tap water
dropper or pipette
bowl
black pepper
teaspoon
Procedure:
The procedure should be clear and detailed, so that others can repeat it. The details should be specific
in how the procedure changes the independent variable, controls all variables that need to be controlled,
and observes or measures the resulting changes to the dependent variable.

Fill a bowl ¾ full with tap water.

Place about a teaspoon of ground black pepper in the bowl. DO NOT STIR!
Observe what happens to the black pepper.
Put two drops of dish soap on your finger.
Gently use your finger to touch the surface of the water.
Data and Observations:
Present all data and observations in a neat and organized manner. Include tables and graphs where
appropriate/possible.

Before the dishsoap:

the pepper starts out all clumped together but slowly seperates from each other.

the pepper wasnt sinking at all

After the dishsoap:

The pepper moved away from my finger when i put the dishsoap on it.

not to long after the pepper started sinking.

Conclusion:
Include the following as a summary paragraph in the conclusion of your lab report:

• Analysis of the results of the experiment

• Rationale for the support or rejection of the hypothesis
• Description of how the investigation could be tested further

Conclusion:
In conclusion my hypothesis was right, the pepper moved away from the dishsoap. I believe the
investigation could be tested further by testing small insects that walk, or float on water.

Questions:
Answer these questions in complete sentences using evidence from your investigation.
• The properties of water are an essential part of what makes water unique. What affect does the
properties of water have on Earth’s surface and its systems?

• How does water’s molecular structure affect solubility of substances on Earth? Provide a real-
world example.? The polar covalently bonded water molecules act to exclude nonpolar
molecules, causing the fats to clump together. The structure of many molecules can greatly
influence their solubility. Iceburgs

• Explain how all the properties of water are related. Provide an example to describe the
interconnectivity of each property. Be sure to include hydrogen bonding, polarity, surface
tension, capillary action, cohesion, adhesion, high specific heat, and expansion upon freezing.
The main properties of water are its polarity, cohesion, adhesion, surface tension, high specific
heat, and evaporative cooling. A water molecule is slightly charged on both ends. This is
because oxygen is more electronegative than hydrogen. The stream of water bends due to the
polarity of water molecules.
