1.0 Introduction
Overview of tourism globally and in Malaysia with stats. Value to economy
Secondary data used
Use key geog terms and models
1.1 Aims
Why are we comparing the sites? What benefits will it bring?
Brief description of sites and why tourists visit
Aim :
This study will compare KLCC Park and Batu Caves to determine and compare the sphere of
influence and the impacts on the environment.
Data to collect:
Visitor number:
Travel times (from the questionnaire)
Money (Entry fee, travels costs to and from the sites, profits and funding
Visit Malaysia 2014 website (good info about government policy on tourism)
1.2 Hypotheses
State the 3 using geog terminology and how each helps address the aim
Hypothesis 1: KLCC might have a bigger sphere compared to the influence of Batu Caves
because of the fact that the Petronas towers are the tallest twin towers in the world, as people
might go to the park to view the towers and there is a shopping centre there, however, most of
the people go to KLCC are locals or from other states in Malaysia, there is a convention centre,
and people might visit there for religious reasons as there is also a Mosque, there is also a huge
fountain and children’s pool, a playground, and a jogging track circle around it. Oh, I forgot to
mention there is also an aquarium.
Sampling 1: I will determine this by asking random people or people who don't look like they are
from here, why they came here, where they are from, etc. Basically, using the sheet that the
teacher will give us to determine this.
Hypothesis 2: Batu Caves might have a more negative impact on the environment compared to
KLCC Park because KLCC is a landmark of Malaysia and if the place is filled with trash, it will ruin

the image of Malaysia and Malaysian citizens. And if we take a look at Batu Caves, which is
riddled with monkeys and stores to feed them, I would expect that Batu caves is much more
unsanitary than KLCC Park.
Sampling 2: I would observe the surroundings where people are going through and where there
would be less people if there is any litter.
Hypothesis 3: I think that KLCC will have a higher order service than Batu caves, one obvious
reason is that there are the twin towers and it is in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. And I
would think that Batu caves are more friendly to tourists or people going there in general, as it is
more sightseeing and not shopping.
Sampling 3: see what types of shops and stores are at each place, what they sell, costs, etc.
The Batu Caves are located within a high limestone outcropping that is in the more
rural part of the main city, Kuala Lumpur which is just south of batu caves. It is just within a
4km radius of the forests Hutan Lipur Bukit Lagong, Kampung Batang Batu and Hulu Langat
Forest which is a popular forest for camping/jungle trekking for tourists. Surrounding Batu
Caves closely however is an older industrial area filled with shops, factories and service
companies.

Batu Caves are also just off a main highway (E33) so it can be easily accessed by
tourists however it is also a disadvantage to the locals as the highway is also highly used by
locals as a means to get to the main city, Kuala Lumpur.
The shortest distance between Batu Caves and the Petronas twin towers by road is
approximately 14.3km and averages between 25 to 47 minutes to travel by car. This shows
the flexibility of congestion between the two locations. It is about 9.5km directly measuring in
a straight line.
