Compass Tutorial
Once you have successfully installed SEL Compass the first window that will open is the SEL Compass
Options window. In this window you will be able to setup where SEL Compass will check for updates,
Enable Update Notifications, Overwrite files when a new package is downloaded, where documents will
be stored after download, if you want to save the installation files to redistribute, and the date range
that new packages will be shown in the What’s New section.
Update Source Location:
The Update Source Location option tells SEL Compass where to poll for updates from. You have the
option to either update from the SEL Website or to use the “Other” option where you can direct SEL
Compass to update from a particular package folder on your local drive or from a network location for
users that want more control over what updates are to be used.
Update Frequency:
The Update Frequency option allows you to control when SEL Compass looks for updates. If you are
using a local or network location for update packages, the Update Frequency will also check these
locations for updated files. Once you enable Update Notifications you can set the Frequency, Time, and
Day that SEL Compass will search for updates.
*Note: You will need to have SEL Compass running in the background for it to search for updates. In
order to keep SEL Compass running in the background you will need to start SEL Compass and then use
the Minimize button in the upper right corner of the SEL Compass window. This will hide SEL Compass
but it will show as an icon next to your clock in your Taskbar.
File Destinations:
The File Destinations option allows you to designate where each of the downloaded documents are
stored. To change the Document Destinations you will click on the directory that you will like to change
the location and browse to the new folder by using the “…” button that appears.
File Management:
This option allows you to save the installation and literature files from the applications to a local or
network directory. This feature is useful when needing to keep employees on the same version of
software. One user will setup Compass to Save the Installation and Package files on a network folder
and the other users will direct their Update Source Location “Other” option to that folder and pull the
files from there.
Other Settings:
Show newly released packages will show only the packages that have been released or updated within
the specified day range. These packages will show on the What’s New tab in SEL Compass to make is
easier to see only the packages that have been updated or released in a specific timeframe.
SEL Compass Welcome Page:
The SEL Compass Welcome Page is the first navigational window that you come to after the install and
after you setup the SEL Compass Options. From here you can browse for Applications and Documents
using the multiple selections:
Products – Maintain a comprehensive list of SEL Products, plus group and organize the products most
important to you.
Solutions – The Solutions view organizes all SEL Solutions for you, so information is just a click away on
your computer.
Literature – Synchronize and maintain all of your SEL Documentation using SEL Compass.
Updates – SEL Compass automatically keeps track of updates to SEL Software, Literature, and Solutions
to keep you up to date with the latest information and software.
Remove – The Remove selection allows you to uninstall or remove specific SEL Applications or SEL
Literature items from your PC.
QuickSet – Opens a window and installs just the QuickSet Applications and related packages for a quick
and easy setup option.
Tools – Opens a window that allows you to install optional QuickSet Tools that are not installed with the
QuickSet option.
Solutions View:
The Solutions View allows you to browse for Applications and Documents by the different Solution
categories. You can browse by Literature or by Product Solutions.
Products View:
If you know the products that you have or need you can choose to browse for downloads by products.
This view allows you to select your product and shows you all of the available options for downloading
and updating your Software or Literature.
Literature View:
If you are looking for Literature about your product you can search for document types using the
Literature view. In this view you can search for Application Handbooks, Data Sheets, Flyers, and
Instruction Manuals that relate to your products.
What’s New View:
The What’s New view will show only the packages that are either New or Updated within the timeframe
that is outlined in the SEL Compass Options window. Use this window if you need to find specific
Applications or Literature items that have been Updated or Released within the specific timeframe.
Updates View:
The Updates View allows you to see if any of the software or literature packages that you have currently
installed or downloaded have updates available. When you have an update that is available it will be
listed in the window with the information about the update.
Remove View:
The Remove View allows you to remove currently installed Software and Literature packages that are no
longer needed. This view will also tell you what packages you currently have installed using SEL
Compass.
Selected View:
The Selected view shows all of the packages that are currently selected and will be Installed, Updated, or
Removed from the current location.
