WLP Week 10 Grade 7

This document provides the weekly learning plan for 8th grade mathematics for week 10. The objectives are to distinguish functions from relations and correctly write functions. On days 1-4, students will review relations and functions, do an activity to identify functions, and learn about function notation and the vertical line test. Examples will be used to identify functions and write tables and graphs of functions. A worksheet assessment will be given to evaluate learning. Homework on functions will be assigned through an online platform.

A. Recall

The students are expected to recall their lesson about

Relations and Ways to represent a relation using
different illustrations.
B. Motivation
Activity: Map Me!
Methodology:
1. Ask students to get their notebooks and construct a
mapping to relate the following: a. A class section to
the students in that section. b. Your classmates to their
hometown
2. Afterward, ask the guide questions below.

Guide Questions:
1. How did you construct the mapping diagram for
each situation?
2. How can you differentiate the mapping diagram of
the two? Which uses the same first element?
3. Can you name other relations whose second element
is unique for every first element?

C. Discussion
• Function – a set of ordered pairs (𝑥, 𝑦) in which no
two distinct pairs have the same first number
Example:
The relation {(2, 3), (3, 2), (4, 2)} is a function since
the first elements are distinct, while {(2, 1), (2, 5), (3,
8)} is not a function since 2 is a common first element
of two of the ordered pairs.

• Function Notation A function is usually written using

the notation 𝑓(𝑥) (read as “𝑓 of 𝑥”), where 𝑓(𝑥) is the
dependent variable and 𝑥 is the independent variable.

Example:

In 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥, 𝑓(𝑥) is the dependent variable while 𝑥 is the

independent variable. This can be written in other ways,
such as 𝑔(𝑡) = 2𝑡, ℎ(𝑠) = 2𝑠, or simply 𝑦 = 2𝑥.

• Vertical Line Test If a vertical line crosses the graph at

more than one point, then the relation is not a function.

Example:
Given the graph of 𝑦 = 𝑥, a vertical line drawn at any point
of the graph intersects the graph at exactly one point. This
means that 𝑦 = 𝑥 is a function.
D. Developing Mastery
Example 1:

Which of the following relations are functions?

a. {(2, 3), (2, 5), (1, 5), (1, 3)}
b. {(1, 2), (3, 4), (5, 6), (7, 8)}
c. {(−1, 5), (2, 5), (4, 5), (4, 3)}
d. {(2, −3), (−2, −3), (3, 4), (−3, −4)}

Solution:
To determine whether a set of ordered pairs is a
function, check if there are common first elements. The
relation {(2, 3), (2, 5), (1, 5), (1, 3)} is not a function
since the ordered pairs (2, 3), (2, 5) and (1, 5), (1, 3)
have the same first elements, which are 2 and 1,
respectively.

The relation {(1, 2), (3, 4), (5, 6), (7, 8)} is a function
since no two ordered pairs have the same first element.

The relation {(−1, 5), (2, 5), (4, 5), (4, 3)} is not a
function since the ordered pairs (4, 5), (4, 3) have the
same first element, which is 4.

The relation {(2, −3), (−2, −3), (3, 4), (−3, −4)} is a
function since no two ordered pairs have the same first
element.

Example 2:
Determine whether the relation below is a function.

Solution:
Notice from the diagram that there is only one arrow
coming from each first element. This means that no
first element is repeated. If we write the relation using
ordered pairs, we will have {(1, 2), (2, 2), (3, 3), (4,
3)}. Thus, the given relation is a function.

Example 2:
Construct a table of values for the equation 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 1
using 𝑥 = −2, −1, 0, 1, 2 and plot it on the Cartesian
coordinate plane. Then, use the vertical line test to
determine whether it is a function or not.

Solution:

1. Substitute the values of 𝑥 in 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 1 with its

corresponding values.
2. Construct the table of values given the values of 𝑥
with its corresponding values of 𝑦.

3. Plot the points on the Cartesian coordinate plane and

then connect them by a straight line. Check if there is a
vertical line that can pass through the graph more than
once.
Since no vertical line passes through the graph twice,
the equation 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 1 represents a function.
E. Application
1. Which among y=x2 and x=y2 is a function.
1
2. Construct a table of values for the equation y= x
2
using 𝑥 = −4, −2, 0, 2, 4 and graph it on the Cartesian
coordinate plane. Then, use the vertical line test to
determine whether it is a function or not.
