Symbols As Used in Circuit Diagrams

The document discusses circuit diagrams and conventional symbols used to represent electrical components. It provides examples of drawing circuit diagrams using standard symbols to represent real-world circuits involving car lamps, connections in a student's circuit, and adding a voltmeter to measure potential difference across a coil. The student made a mistake in their initial circuit connections.

SYMBOLS AS USED IN CIRCUIT DIAGRAMS

1) Draw the circuit diagram for this circuit, using

conventional symbols.

2) The figure represents the circuit that operates two of

the lamps on a car. Draw the circuit diagram for this circuit,
using conventional symbols.
3) A student learning about electric circuits connects the
circuit shown.

(a) The student has already made one mistake with his
connections. What is his mistake? [1]

(b) Draw the circuit diagram of the arrangement shown,

using standard symbols. [2]

(c) The student now connects a voltmeter to the circuit, so that readings can be taken to find the
resistance of the coil of wire. On your circuit diagram, draw the voltmeter, connected to measure
the potential difference across the coil. [1]

(d) Having obtained a correctly working

circuit, the readings on the two
meters for one setting of the variable
resistor are as shown
Record these two readings. [1]
