Assignment Two July 2023

This document contains questions for a GIS assignment. It asks the student to write notes on specific data structures used in GIS like TIN, RLE, and quad trees. It also asks the student to provide examples of geospatial analyses performed by GIS aside from map production. Finally, it asks the student to define topology, explain its three major elements, and describe three types of visualization errors that can occur when representing 3D earth entities in 2D along with the map projections used to solve each error type.

GIS ASSIGNMENT Three July 2022

Question 1 Write notes on Rasta data structures with focus on the following
- TIN ( Triangular irregular Network
- Run Length Encoded Data structures
- Chain Encoding
- Quad Tree Data Structure
Question 2 Aside from the production of maps, the GIS also perform geospatial analysis.
Give Examples of these analyses.

Question 3
a) Define the term topology
b) Explain the three major elements that characterize topology
c) The earth is not flat or smooth, and presenting its entities in 2-dimensional form
results in different types of errors. Explain the following types of error visualizations and
for each indicate the projection types used to solve the errors;
i) The ‘circular room’ visualization
ii) The ‘square room with flat walls’ visualization
iii) The ‘tepee’ visualization
