Detailed Lesson Plan on Polygons and its Properties

I. OBJECTIVES
After 60 minutes of discussion, 80% of the students must have the following
competencies with at least 75% level of masteries:
• Name polygons according to the number of sides;
• Identify the parts of the polygon;
• Differentiate a convex from a non-convex polygon;
• Draw polygons; and
• Participate actively during the class discussion.

b. Greetings
Good afternoon, class! Good afternoon, Ma’am!
Before you take your seats, please
pick up the pieces of dirt on the floor
and throw it properly in the trash can.

You may now take your seats. Thank you, Ma’am!

c. Checking of Attendance
Alright! Who is the class secretary?
Please check the attendance.

d. Review
Okay, Before we start our discussion,
who can still remember the topic last
meeting?
Last meeting, Sir Mark discussed about

Exactly. Very Good. That is correct.

e. Motivation

Before we proceed with our

discussion, let’s play a game first. This
game will be called “ITO O KAHON?”

Here is the mechanics of the game.

1. Students will draw figures from
the box.
2. The 11 students who will get
the triangle shape will be the
players of the game.
3. One of the students will serve
as the bettor; the remaining 10
will hold the box.
4. The students with the box
should convince the bettor to
choose him/her.
5. The bettor will choose from the
boxes of where she thinks the
lucky figure located.
6. The one who holds the chosen
box will automatically have a
prize.
7. If the bettor chooses the right
box he will also win.
Yes, Ma’am.

Do you understand?
Okay, let the game begin! Expected Answers:
A. Activity
Direction: identify the given figure if it
is a polygon or not.
B. Analysis
So, how did you find the activity?
The activity is easy since we just need to
identify where it belongs.
Yes, very good.

What do you think is the relation of our

activity to our discussion?

The activity is related to our discussion

which is the polygons and its properties.
Very well said, Melody!

From the figures, recall the polygons

you encountered as it will be useful in
our discussion.
So today, as a continuation with our
discussion, we will learn about the
polygons and its properties.

C. Abstraction

Now, let us proceed to our topic.

Here is the diagram of our discussion.

Let us start with polygons.

Polygons

Where do you think the name

“polygon” comes from?
Yes, Adam?

Exactly, thank you.

So, what do we mean by polygon?

It comes from two Greek words: poly
Yes, Ana?
means “many” and gon/gony which
means “angle”, thus the word polygon
That’s right, thank you. means “ many angles”

Furthermore, we could classify a

figure a polygon if?
It is a closed plane figure formed by three

or more segments called sides.

 Each side intersects exactly two

other sides, once at each
endpoint.
 No two sides with a common
endpoint are collinear.
That’s right.  Each line segment is called the

endpoint where the sides meet
Okay, very good class. is called the vertex of the
polygon.
Let’s have the classification of polygons
below.
What do you think is the name of the
polygon with three sides?
Yes, Ma’am.
Very good. How about with four sides?

Alright, what about a polygon with five

sides?

Okay. What if it has six sides? A polygon with three sides is a triangle.

Exactly, how about if it has seven sides? Quadrilateral.

A Pentagon, Ma’am.
Yes, very good. But what about a polygon
with eight sides?
It is a heptagon, Ma’am.
Thank you, what if it is nine sided
polygon? It will be called heptagon.

Very good, but how about if it is 10 sided

polygon? Octagon, Ma’am.

Yes, that’s right.

Now, what do we called a polygon with 11 Nonagon
sides? Anyone?

What about a 12-side polygon? It will be called decagon.

Exactly, very good.

Moreover, a polygon with 13 or more

Okay, very good class.

Let’s go on with the parts of the Yes, Ma’am.

polygon.

Parts of the Polygon

We have here a 5-sided polygon,

based on the classification what kind of
polygon is this?

Exactly, very good.

That is a pentagon.
A polygon is named using its vertices
written in consecutive order.

Who can define vertex/ vertices?

Thank you.

The vertices of Pentagon ABCDE are Vertex/ vertices is the intersection of two
A, B, C, D, and E. sides.
Another part of a polygon is angles.
What is an angle? Anyone?

An angle of the polygon is a figure

In Pentagon ABCDE, the angles are formed by two sides, sharing a common

Another part of the polygon is the side.
Who can read? Anyone?

Thank you.
It is a segment joining any two
Looking at the polygon, the sides are consecutive vertices.
AB, BC, CD, DE, and EA.

We also have consecutive angles and

sides.
What is consecutive angle?

So, What do you think are the Consecutive angles are two angles that

Thank you, Adam. Diagonals is a segment joining the two

nonconsecutive vertices.
The diagonals of Pentagon ABCDE
are: AC, AD, BE, BD, and CE.

Diagonals has two kinds:

1. Total Diagonals
2. Diagonals from one vertex

Can you give me the diagonals of

We also have interior angles and
exterior angles.

Take a look at the figure, What do you

think is the difference between the
two? Any idea?

Interior angles are angles that can be

found inside the polygon while exterior
Exactly. Very good. angles are angles that can be found
outside.
Interior angle is an angle inside a
polygon at one of its vertices.
What about exterior angle?
Yes, Regina?

Thank you. Exterior angle is an angle outside a

polygon at one of its vertices.

convex polygons.

Convex polygons
Who can define convex polygons?

A polygon is a convex if no line that

Exactly. Thank you, Jill. contains a side of the polygons contains a
point in the interior of the polygon.
Moreover, a polygon is convex if no
diagonal is in the exterior of the
polygon.

If we have convex polygon, we also

have non-convex polygon.

Who can define non-convex polygon?

Do you get the difference between the
two?
Yes, Ma’am.
Alright ,then let’s move one to the
types of convex polygon.

Under the convex polygon is the

regular and irregular polygon.

Let’s start with regular polygon.

Anyone can read the definition?

A regular polygon is both equilateral and

equiangular.
Thank you.

A polygon is a regular polygon if all the

sides have equal length, and its angles
have equal measures.

What about the irregular polygon?

Yes, Athan?
A polygon is irregular if its sides have
different lengths and its angles have
different measures
Thank you.
None, Ma’am.
Let me show you some polygons.
Classify which one of them is regular
