1.0 INTRODUCTION

Thematic maps are a type of map that display the spatial distribution of a particular
theme or topic. They are designed to communicate information about a specific theme or
subject and are useful for displaying complex data in a clear and concise manner. Thematic
maps can be used to show a variety of information, including population density, political
boundaries, land use, and climate patterns. These maps can be used in a variety of fields,
such as geography, geology, ecology, and urban planning, to analyze and interpret spatial
patterns and relationships, and have become integral part of modern cartography.

We are assigned with the task to understand the process of making a thematic base,
specifically a qualitative map by the means of Adobe Illustrator. Criterions that must be
included and be explained in this task are text, shape, symbology and generalizations. At the
end of this task, we should be able to better utilize our experiences and knowledge to better
incorporate map making into our life and later on, in our profession.

2.0 OBJECTIVES
• To develop our skill on Adobe Illustrator (AI)
• To know more about shape in AI
• To be able to change the text and color with suitable situation
• To make sure that we be able to create and draw thematic map using AI

3.0 METHODOLOGY
3.1 Using Map Info

1. First of all, we looked for data to make a thematic map and we chose to take the title
of a popular waterfall in the state of Johor

2. Secondly, we took a picture for the state of Johor on the internet to be used as a
reference when digitizing using Mapinfo

3. After we are ready to digitize, we change the output to be converted into a .png
image to be inserted into Adobe Illustrator and start decorating to become a thematic
map

1. Open Adobe Illustrator CS4 (64 bit) application for making a quantitative map.
Next, click” File” tab and choose” New”. It will pop up ’New Document’, fill the name for
your file and adjust the paper size follow you interest. For this map, I will choose the
A4 size paper for editing the map design.
2. For the second part, added the map image that we process with Map Info. To add the
image, we must click the ‘File’ tab again and choose ‘Place’ and search your image
file. The image will pop up but not with the proper size, so make sure you change the
size follow you interest.

6.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATION

After reviewing available information on tourist attractions, nature preserves, and hiking areas
with waterfalls in Johor, Malaysia, here is my conclusion and recommendation. In conclusion,
Johor offers a range of stunning waterfalls within its nature preserves and hiking areas that
attract a significant number of tourists. The waterfalls are surrounded by lush greenery and
pristine natural settings that make them an ideal destination for nature lovers, hikers, and
adventure enthusiasts.

The recommendations from me, one of the top attractions in Johor is Kota Tinggi Waterfall,
which is the highest waterfall in the state and a popular spot for swimming, picnicking, and
hiking. Other recommended waterfalls include Pulai Waterfall, which is located within a forest
reserve and offers a range of hiking trails, and the Sungai Bantang Waterfall, which is located
in Endau Rompin National Park and offers an excellent opportunity for wildlife sightings.

It is important to note that visitors should take necessary precautions while hiking and
exploring the waterfalls, such as wearing appropriate footwear, bringing plenty of water, and
avoiding going alone or at night. Visitors should also respect the environment and avoid
littering or damaging the natural surroundings. Overall, Johor's waterfalls offer a unique
opportunity to experience the beauty of nature and enjoy outdoor activities in a serene and
tranquil setting.
