1. General Safety
As with any electromechanical equipment, safety precautions must be followed to prevent injury during operation or
repair. Familiarize yourself with E-STOP (emergency stop switches) on any equipment you are operating. Do not
attempt to perform any repair on the system unless power is disconnected and proper Lockout/Tagout Procedures
are followed. Know the locations of circuit breakers and power connections that may exist on the system. When
operating equipment where electrical power or moving parts are exposed, remove jewelry (including rings) and tie
back long hair. Do not wear loose clothing that may catch or snag on moving parts. Wear safety glasses to prevent
eye injury from flying or falling parts and dust. Ensure proper tool care; do not leave tools near moving parts or
electrical components. “Ground” yourself before coming into contact with circuit boards by touching your skin to a
grounded piece of equipment prior to handling. Follow standard Electrostatic Dissipation (ESD) procedures. When
working on or near High Voltage, maintain awareness and safe practice.

If you become aware of a hazardous or potentially hazardous situation, do not allow others to enter the area. Follow
the

“S.W.I.M.” principle:
S – STOP anyone heading toward the area.
W – WARN all around you of potential hazard.
I – ISOLATE the area using obstacles if necessary.
M – MAINTAIN; do not leave the area in a hazardous state, i.e., disconnect power to disable the machine.

2. Introduction
The inc.jet Industrial Printing System (IPS)
.UNO™ is a complete HP TIJ 2.5 single pen
solution. The .UNO™ combines a single pen
controller with the IPS Director™ User
Interface (UI).

The UI provides an operator-friendly

interface that configures and monitors
printing operations. The IPS Producer™, a
job layout program that runs on Microsoft
Windows supports a virtually unlimited set
of fonts as well as a large set of fixed
barcodes that are processed in the
application, and a limited set of dynamic
barcodes that are processed “on the fly”
within each print controller.

Jobs are transferred from the Producer™ via

USB drive or over the network. The
.UNO™ has an Ethernet port for connecting
to a database or for receiving data from the
customer application.

3. Electrical Connections
The .UNO™ electrical connections are
located on the bottom of the unit.
Connectors include: Ethernet, I/O,
encoder, sensor, pen stall, and power.
Only the pen stall connection is required
to print.

3.1 Pen Stall

The included PEN STALL ASSEMBLY –
SINGLE P/N 5019564G has an all metal
body and latch and includes a bi-directional
ski. A 6-foot cable is attached and uses the
same 14 pin connector as all IPS pen stalls.
The trigger sensor attaches to one side of the
pen stall and the other side is used to mount
the stall to a support frame.

Bi-Directional Print
This feature is used when a print head is
configured to traverse back and forth across
an intermittently advancing web (i.e. vacuum
sealed packaging line). It can be configured to
print in both directions (vs. a no-printing
return stroke). To do this some basic
information is needed to print in the correct
location and in the correct direction (i.e. not
reverse image).

Enable Bi-Directional Print

Turns the feature on

Select Control Input

Select the wired input indicating print direction that will be changed by the host machine
controlling the traversing. Inputs 3,4,5, and 6 are available on a V5 Satellite Controller. Inputs 3,
4, and 5 are found on the 36-pin connector and input 6 is found on the 5 pin Molex power
connector.

Select Reverse State

This is the signal level of the Control Input that indicates when the direction is not the one shown
in the default pen mounting section of the Transport Settings dialog (see below). So, when this
signal is not active the print direction is normal.

Distance from Pen to Group (Reverse)

When printing in the reverse direction the sensor delay is needed for the reverse direction. Note
that the individual pens keep their own respective positions but just simply “reversed”.

Operation
The operation breaks down as follows:

1. When the job is first started the printer will poll the state of the “Reverse State” input.
The direction for the first page printed will come from this value.
2. Before the printer completes the page, it needs to know the direction of the next page.
(Note: the hardware is reconfigured at the end of each page printed – for each pen
independently). This will then permit the second page to be printed in the correct
direction (i.e. already setup and the end of previous page.
3. Repeat step 2.

Strongly Recommended
The Reverse Direction input should be set at the point near the beginning of each traverse across the web,
where the sensor signal pulse is started. This will latch the correct value of the input well before the end
of the page is reached. This makes it very easy to know when to change the input value.

5.3.2 Encoder…
The Encoder Settings Screen provides access
to three different encoder operating modes:
Encoder Input, Sensor/Sensor, and Auto
Encoder. Encoder Input mode uses a physical
encoder to track transport motion.
Sensor/Sensor mode uses two sensors to
determine the speed of motion. Auto Encoder
mode generates encoder pulses at a
programmable rate.

Encoder Input Mode

The Encoder Input mode supports both single channel and two channel (quadrature) encoder
modes of operation.

Single Channel - Single channel mode is used for operation on a continuous transport. When
using single channel mode, the direction the encoder turns is not important.
Two Channel - Two channel encoder mode is recommended for any system that may be stopped
with product in the middle of a print. The direction of movement is detected, and any backwards
motion will not cause printing. The encoder must rotate forward by the backwards amount before
printing will resume. The Reverse Inputs is checked if the encoder is mounted “backwards”.

Note: When using two channel encoder mode, the system speed is only detected and
displayed when printing is enabled.

Encoder Resample –This option is available when using the Encoder Input. The IPS printing
system is designed to print with a 300 dpi (dots per inch) encoder system and print is stretched or
compressed if a 300-dpi encoder is not utilized. When a non-300 dpi encoder is used, Encoder
Resample is selected to correct the input encoder and create the proper 300 dpi printing signals.

DPI – When Encoder Resample is selected the actual dpi of the Encoder signal is entered here
and the hardware is configured to resample the encoder input and print at 300 dpi.
Note: (When using encoder resample the system does not properly track motion at very slow speeds).

Sensor / Sensor Mode

The Sensor Input mode is utilized when a
sensor is connected to the Encoder input. The
distance between the top of form sensor and
the “encoder sensor” is entered in the Distance
inc.jet™ proprietary Document No.: IJM029

Between Sensors entry box. The printer
hardware automatically detects the system
speed and updates the auto encoder rate every
time a product is processed through the two
sensors. (The Top of Form Sensor first, then
the Encoder Sensor).

Auto Encoder Mode

The Auto Encoder mode is selected when the
precise transport speed is known and there is
no need to attach a physical encoder. The
hardware generates a 300-dpi encoder pulse
rate that matches the transport speed entered in
the Free Run Rate entry box.

5.3.3 Sensor…
The Sensor selection from the Setup Menu provides
access to the Sensor Settings Screen.

Use Input Connector

Select the Use Input Connector option to use a
physical Sensor to detect products. The default mode
of operation for the sensor input signal is “Rising
Edge” and “Light On”.

Two check boxes are provided to modify the Sensor

default settings. Select the “Trigger On Trailing
Edge” to change the trigger to the falling edge of the
input signal. Select the “Dark On” to change the
trigger to indicate the sensor asserts the signal when
light is not detected by the Sensor.

Auto Generate
The Auto Generate mode is used to automatically generate a top of form at a programmable
interval. The Auto Generate mode is used when printing on continuous media (a roll of paper)
where the printing system can generate its own top of form.
Note: This mode of operation is excellent for system testing, but very rarely used in industrial
printing operations
The Check box for Auto Generate I/O event should not be checked unless the I/O Event Auto
Sensor feature is enabled.

Track Page Size

The Track Page Size check box is used when the printing system is processing different sized
packages and media. When this mode is enabled the system tracks the size of the product being
printed and stops printing when the end of product is detected.

5.3.4 Global Pen Settings…

The Global Pen Setting provides access to General
and Ink Tracking.

General Settings Tab

Power Up Delay – This option is no longer used.

Pixels to Purge per Nozzle – This setting defines the

number of ink drops ejected from the print cartridge
nozzles when a Purge is requested. The operator can
request a purge at any time using the Options menu.
The default Pixels to Purge per Nozzle value is 50
drops.

Sparse Spit Repeat Distance – The sparse spit

repeat distance is used to set the frequency of the
sparse spit cycling through all nozzles on each pen.
Sparse spit is used to make sure each nozzle is fired
regularly, to prevent ink drying on the print head in
spaces rarely used. Sparse spit is triggered by
transport motion, so the repeat rate is programmed in
transport travel distance. The distance is selected
using an up/down control, ranging from every 16
inches to every 1008 inches.

Ink Tracking Tab

Enable Ink Tracking – Select this option to set the
IPS Director™ UI to track ink usage in the Print
Cartridge and report when the ink levels are low or
empty. Ink usage is tracked by the print hardware.
This option is off by default.

Auto Reset Ink Levels on Pen Change Detected –

Select this option to set the Print Hardware to
automatically reset ink levels to full when it detects a
print cartridge has been changed. Use this option if
you always use the same ink cartridges for all
printing and do not change inks for different jobs or
materials.

Drop Down Menus are provided to set the following default levels:

Cartridge Volume (mL) – When using a standard Print Cartridge, the volume setting allows a
technician the ability to adjust the default volume of ink. It is recommended the default value of
42 milliliters be used. Hewlett Packard TM Thermal Ink Jet Print Cartridges vary in their fill
levels, depending on the type of ink being used, so the actual volume of the installed cartridge

UNO Operations Manual Doc. No. IJM029 Rev. F
can be set here if different from the default amount. A drop down allows adjustment of the value
from 30 to 42 milliliters.
Drop Volume (pL) – The drop volume of each drop printed can vary depending on the ink type
and print DPI and speed. The default Pixel Size of 28 picolitres is appropriate for slow
transports, but as the transport speed speeds up the Pixels Size may need to be reduced for more
accurate ink usage tracking. Typical drop sizes for high-speed printing are around 24 – 26
picolitres. A drop down allows adjustment of the value from 46 to 10 picolitres.

Note: Alcohol based ink drops are approximately 60% of the volume of water-based inks.

Cartridge Low Warning (mL) – When using standard Print Cartridges, the IPS Director™ UI
provides a warning to the operator when the estimated volume of ink in the print cartridge
reaches this level, entered in milliliters. The default Cartridge Low Warning is 3 milliliters. A
drop down allows adjustment of the value from 0 to 29 milliliters, or None.
Cartridge Empty Warning (mL) – When using standard Print Cartridges, the IPS Director™
UI provides an error to the operator when the estimated volume of ink in the print cartridge
reaches the selected level, entered in milliliters. The default Cartridge Empty Warning is 0
milliliters. A drop down allows adjustment of the value from 0 to 29 milliliters, or None.
Bulk Cartridge Warning (mL) –Bulk cartridges can print more ink then the 42 milliliters
contained in a standard cartridge, but still have a limited life span. The life span of bulk
cartridges is affected by many factors and varies from system to system. Use the Bulk Cartridge
Warning to set the number of milliliters of ink that should be printed from a new cartridge before
the IPS Director™ UI provides a warning to the operator that the cartridge is near end of life and
should be replaced. The default Bulk Cartridge Warning is 400 milliliters. A drop down allows
adjustment of the value from 1500 to 100 milliliters, or None.

Monitor Ink levels on Bulk Ink Empty – Enabling this will track ink usage after the Bulk Ink
Empty Warning has occurred. After the warning has occurred the system will continue to print
until 20 mL of ink has been used then printing will be stopped. This will ensure that the bulk ink
tank is changed before the system is completely dry of ink.

Monitor Ink levels on Cartridge Ink Empty – Enabling this will track ink usage after the
Cartridge Ink Empty Warning has occurred. After the warning has occurred the system will stop
printing. This will ensure that the cartridge is changed.

5.3.5 Line Properties…

The Line Properties Screen provides the
ability to name each line and set the print
resolution across the print cartridges on that
line.
The Name entered will be displayed in the line
summary on both the Home Screen and the
Line Details Screen.

The Print Resolution can be set to 600 or 300

dpi. Setting the Print Resolution to 300 dpi
disables one of the nozzle columns in the Print
Cartridge. 300 dpi is recommended when not
using an encoder. The default Print Resolution
is 600 dpi.

When using 300 DPI there is an option of

using the “Even” or “Odd” nozzle column on
the cartridge. This is very important when the
pen stall is mounted lying on its side. The
lower column (bottom column) should be used
in this orientation.

The Enable double speed printing checkbox enables the hardware to print at double the
maximum speed allowed by each horizontal resolution. When printing with double speed
enabled the hardware skips every other image pixel allowing it to print at double the speed and
stay within its maximum 12 kHz firing frequency.

The final image placed on the paper is 150 dpi but with the edge acuity of a 300 DPI image. This
holds true for any DPI – the total DPI of an image is reduced by half, while the image retains

acuity. See Example above.

The Enable page synchronization checking checkbox enables the system to verify that multiple
Print Controllers all print data for the same page in unison. This is crucial when printing
dynamic data.

The Enable Line Configuration Script checkbox enables the SQL database “Pull” feature for
dynamic data. See IJAN025 IPS Director UI Database Connectivity.pdf for more information.

Disable Counter Mismatch Warning is to turn off the counter mismatch warning. Counter
mismatch warning can occur when using the Independent Encoder and Sensor feature. This
warning can occur when using multiple printers that have their own sensor and printing the same
job. If the first printer completes multiple pages and the second printer does not complete those
pages the warning may occur.

Enable Pause Print will allow the user

to stop printing (temporarily) without
exiting print mode. The button will
toggle between Pause and Resume
when pressed and in print mode.

Enable Print Limit Entry will prompt

the operator to enter the number of total
pages to be printed for the entirety of
the print run. If zero is entered printing
will resume until stop is pressed.

6.4.1 Line Status

The initial view in the Line Details Screen is the Line Details Status View. The Line Status
View contains a visual summary of the line configuration and current status.
The status of the jet.engine printer is indicated in the
with a status icon - . The jet.engine printer
name is displayed above the status icon. The color of
the status icon can be Grey (disconnected), Green
(OK), Yellow (Warning Pending), or Red (Error
Pending). For normal operations the status icon is
green. When an error or warning event occurs in the
controller the event is logged in the operations log
and the status icon changes color to match the event.
The status icon remains that color until the event is
resolved, either automatically or manually by the
operator. Once all warning and error events are
resolved the status icon color is changed back to
green.

jet.engine Status
Clicking on the jet.engine Status Icon brings up a jet.engine Status Screen. If the system is not
printing, the jet.engine tests the print cartridge stall upon entry into the jet.engine Status Screen.
The print cartridge stall test detects if a print cartridge has been installed, removed, or changed
and performs a test of the print cartridge drive circuitry for each print cartridge installed. If the
system is printing, the jet.engine simply returns the current status and does not perform any print
cartridge tests.

Pen Icon
The upper part of the pen icon indicates if the pen stall is enabled,. A white background
indicates the pen is enabled. A dark grey background indicates the pen is disabled. The bottom
part of the pen icon indicates the status of the pen hardware, as well as the current ink status.
Every time a pen test is performed the results of the pen test is displayed here. If the hardware

6.9 Print Cartridge Operations

6.9.1 Changing a Print Cartridge

When changing a cartridge, the lines cannot be printing. When a line is printing, the
operator should never change any of the Print Cartridges. Damage to the Print Cartridge
or the drive electronics may occur.

Insert a new cartridge. Click on the Print Controller Status Bar to enter the Print Controller
Status Screen. The system will automatically check the print cartridge. Select the Pen A Tab to
verify that the new print cartridge was installed properly by looking at the Test Status, the Good
and Bad Nozzle counts, and the Ink Used.

Removing a Cartridge
1. Open the cover.
2. Press down on the blue plastic pen latch to unlock it; pull it back.
3. Grasp the left side of the cartridge slide it to the left and lift upward to remove it.

Reinstalling a Cartridge

The Jet Engine status Pen A tab shows the
number of good nozzles (tested electrically). In
this example 2 nozzle firing resistors have
failed.

In addition the Name of the Ink is shown at the

bottom.

Note: If the ink name is does not match

the name on the cartridge label reseat
the pen and wipe the contacts as shown
in the section below.

6.9.3 Cleaning a Print Cartridge

Periodic wiping is recommended to maintain good print quality. Print
quality can deteriorate due to dried nozzles or ink or dust build-up on
the nozzle plate. Dried nozzles or other debris will prevent ink from
firing, which results in poor print quality (see image below). This
kind of print quality may also result when nozzles need priming (see
next section).

To Clean a Print Cartridge:

• Moisten a tech wipe using distilled water.
• Position the wipe with your finger in the center of the nozzle plate and wipe in a single motion in
line with the 2 columns of nozzles.

The following should not be used to wipe the print cartridge:

• Paper towels (These cloths usually contain a high amount of recycled content and are abrasive.
Abrasive damage to the nozzles can degrade print quality and increase ink buildup on the
nozzles)
• Kleenex or tissue paper (These cloths are usually not fiber-less.)
• Sponge (Particles from the sponge can be left behind in the nozzles and on the nozzle plate.)
• Solvents

Contact pads

Pen Cartridge Contact Pad and Pogo Pins

Check for possible causes of poor pogo pin to cartridge

connections. If it is determined that there are electronically
bad nozzles, remove the print cartridge with a poor
connection from the stall and check for the following:
• Ink or other contaminants on cartridge
interconnect contacts
• Look for ripped or dented contact tab pads that
may be causing poor electrical connection
• Check the corresponding pen stall for bent,
damaged or sticking spring loaded pogo pins that
may be making poor contact with the cartridge
contact pads
• Try to reseat the cartridge (by removing and re-
installing the cartridge)

• If these methods do not solve the issue, the contacts may be burned out. Replace the cartridge.
If 1 of 14 power pins is not making contact 1 line will be visible across image, (example 1). If 1 of 22
address pins is not making contact14 fine lines will be visible across the image, (example 2).

6.9.5 Cleaning Pen Contact Connections

Careless handling or numerous cartridge replacements may cause pen contacts to become coated with ink
or other substances that can prevent a good connection.

To Clean Pen Contacts:

1. Moisten a tech wipe (or Q-tip) with distilled water, wipe contact surface clean.

If cleaning the contacts when using solvent based inks; it is ok to use isopropyl alcohol instead of water.
2. Before reinstalling, make sure the surface is completely dry.

Ink or other Clean

Note: Do not clean interconnect contacts with a pencil eraser! A common misconception is that the
interconnect contacts can be cleaned with the eraser of a pencil. The eraser will damage the contacts and
will decrease the life of the cartridge.
