WORKMANSHIP - CEMENT PLASTER

1. GENERAL
The cement plaster shall be of the specified mix and thickness as stated in the item of works. Generally
the thickness is in the range of 12, 15 or20 mm.

2. MATERIALS
Cement shall be of specified type and grade and as approved by Architect/Engineer-in-charge. Sand
(fine aggregate) shall be of the quality as approved and be free from organic matters or salts (Refer
Page No. 30 to 33). All materials including water (Refer Page No. 23, 24) shall be of standard
specifications.

3. ACCESSORIES AND EQUIPMENTS


The accessories and equipment’s required for the job shall be of approved type(s) and consist of every
type of tools required by masons for plastering / pointing work and equipment’s for Preparation of
mortar.

4. SCAFFOLDING
l) The supports shall be strong and sound, properly tied together with horizontal pieces over which the
scaffolding planks shall be fixed. The whole assembly of scaffolding shall be allows easy approach to
every part of the work and movement.
ll) For all other type of works, the single scaffolding shall be allowed. In all such cases the end of the
horizontal scaffolding pole rested on a wall shall rest in a hole which shall be provided only in header
course. Only one header for each of such horizontal pole shall be left out.

5. SURFACE PREPARATION
The joints in masonry work if not done already shall be raked out properly. Surface then shall be
thoroughly washed with water, cleaned and kept adequately wet before commencement of cement
plaster work.

6. MORTAR
l) The mortar for each and every coat for the plaster work shall be of specified mix by using the
specified type of cement, fine aggregate and water as specified in the Item of work.
ll) Whatever be the number of coats of mortar only that quantity of mortar shall be prepared (Wetted
with water) which can be applied/used within 30 minutes.

7. APPLICATION
l) Ceiling plaster should always be completed first before commencement of wall plaster. The surfaces
to be plastered shall be kept fairly wet prior to plastering. Plastering of ceiling shall not be commenced
until the form work of slab above has been removed. This is necessary to ensure that the ceiling plaster
is not disturbed by the vibrations set up during the above operation.
ll) Plaster work on the wall shall be started from top and worked down towards the floor, in case of
skirting work enough space shall be left unplastered above the floor finish.

8. THICKNESS
The required thickness of plaster work is 20 mm the average thickness of the plaster shall not be less
than 20 mm whether the wall to be plastered is of brick or stone/concrete. In case of brick work; the
minimum thickness over any portion of the surface shall not be less than 15 mm.

9. FINISH
The plaster surface shall be finished true and to plumb or as per relevant drawing/s and instructions
and finished to proper degree of smoothness as required, The work shall be tested frequently as the
work proceeds with a true straight edge not less than 2.5 metres long and with plumb bobs, All
horizontal lines and surfaces shall be tested with a level and all joints and corners with a plumb and
square as the work proceeds.

10. CURING
Only approved clean water shall be used for curing. Curing shall be commenced by adopting approved
means and methods the next day or after plaster has hardened sufficiently so as not be damaged when
watered; all surfaces shall be kept continuously in damp condition by approved methods for a
minimum period of 7 days or as directed.
11. PRECAUTIONS
l) Any cracks which may appear in the plastered surface and all portions which sound hollow when
tapped or are found to be soft or otherwise defective, shall be cut out in rectangular shape and redone
as directed and to the satisfaction of Architect/Engineer-in-Charge.
ll) To prevent surface cracks in the plaster work appearing along the junctions between R.C.C./concrete
elements such as beams, columns, lintels and masonry walls; a 150 mm wide approved chicken wire
mesh should be fixed.
lll) During rains freshly applied plaster work shall be adequately/ properly protected/ safeguarded by
approved means from being washed away/spoiled

12. A. MEASUREMENTS
l) For plastering work the length and breadth/height of the plastered surface shall be measured
nearest to a cm and its area shall be calculated in square metres correct upto two places of decimals.
ll) Patch plastering (in repairs) shall be measured as plastering new work; where the patch area
exceeds 2.5 square metres.
lll) Extra payment shall be made for repairing old wall, such as dismantling old plaster, raking out the
joints and cleaning the surface.

13. DEDUCTIONS
l) Deductions in measurements for openings etc. shall be regulated.as specified below.
a) No deductions for openings upto 0.5 square metre in area. b) Deductions for openings
exceed 0.5 metres but not exceeding 3 sq. mts. each shall be made.
c) For opening exceeding 3 square metres in area, deduction will be made in the measurements
for the full opening of the wall treatment on both faces, while at the same time jambs, sills, and soffits
will be measures for payment.

14. RATE
The rate shall be for a square metre of plastered surface. The rate shall include the cost of all materials
(including their wastage), all men power, labour, plants tools, machines/equipments, hoisting
equipment/arrangement, scaffolds, curing, surface Preparation and each and every item/acts,
operation and precaution described here-to-before and all incidentals included in each and every
item/operation/acts described above to satisfactory completion of plaster/work.
