Activity 1.1: Understanding Disaster

1. The given images are natural and man-made disasters occurred in the Philippines. These
images portray a reminiscence to the people affected and served a lesson and a threat to
people to take actions.
2. Typhoon Yolanda is the most memorable yet undesiring of what it bought to the affected
areas.

Disaster is a sudden calamitous occurrence bringing great harm, loss, or death. Based on the cause,
disasters can be divided into two groups. These two basic definitions are natural disasters and man-
made disasters. Natural disasters are those brought on by natural causes, while man-made disasters
are those brought about by human activity. The key distinction between natural and man-made
disasters is this. However, all these forms of disasters may have a significant effect on the
community.

Activity 1.4: Understanding Disaster Risk

Disasters Classification of Disaster Risks (Effects)

Disaster
(Natural/Man-
Made)
1. Typhoon Natural Typhoons carry a slew of disasters, including strong winds,
heavy rain, storm surges, and massive waves, all of which
may result in significant casualties and economic losses.
2. War conflicts Man-made War destroys communities and families, and it frequently
disrupts the social and economic development of nations.
Long-term physical and psychological damage to children
and adults, as well as a loss in financial and human
resources, are all consequences of war.
3. Volcanic Natural Infectious disease, respiratory infection, burns, drop injuries,
eruption and car collisions are all problems after a volcanic eruption
because of the ash's slick, hazy conditions. When alerts are
heeded, the risks of a volcanic eruption causing health
problems are extremely low.
4. Chemical Man-made When corrosive chemicals are touched, they can cause
leakages severe burns, damage eyesight, and harm the respiratory
tract. Some chemical spills cause cancer years after the initial
exposure, such as asbestos inhalation, which causes lung
cancer years later.
5. Vehicular Man-made Mental pain, emotional distress, terror, rage, shame, anxiety,
accident shock, embarrassment, random periods of crying, loss of
appetite, weight fluctuations, lack of energy, sexual
dysfunction, mood changes, and sleep disturbances are all
possible mental and emotional injuries after a car accident.
6. Earthquake Natural Liquefaction, landslides, fire, and tsunami can occur as a
result of earthquakes, resulting in much greater damage and
losses.
7. Drought Natural Inadequate water supply for plants, livestock, and humans is
caused by a lack of rainfall. Food insecurity, starvation,
hunger, epidemics, and population relocation are all possible
outcomes of a drought.
8. Thunderstorm Natural Heavy rainfall (which can cause flash flooding), strong winds,
hail, lightning, and tornadoes are all possible outcomes of
thunderstorms. Severe thunderstorms can wreak havoc on
people's homes and property.
9. Tuberculosis Man-made Feelings of illness or fatigue, weight loss, fever, and night
sweats are all common symptoms of tuberculosis. Coughing,
chest pain, and blood in the cough are all signs of TB disease
of the lungs. The symptoms of tuberculosis in other areas of
the body vary depending on the affected region.
10. Rainfall- Natural Rainfall-induced landslides are common in terrain with steep
induced topography and soils with low tensile strength. Rainfall
landslide penetration into an infinitely partially saturated slope can
result in a reduction or complete elimination of soil suction,
jeopardizing the slope's stability.
11. Flood in rivers Natural Flooding is most often caused by heavy rainfall when natural
and coastal watercourses are unable to handle the excess water. A storm
areas surge as a result of a tropical cyclone, a tsunami, or a high
tide coinciding with higher-than-normal river levels can all
cause water inundation in coastal areas.
12. Avalanche Natural Infrastructure has been destroyed, and the resulting
blockage has harmed many people's livelihoods. People who
enjoy skiing, snowboarding, or snowmobiling are at a higher
risk of dying. A strong avalanche can also destroy structures
and cut off power supplies.
13. Tsunami Natural The majority of tsunami-related deaths occur as a result of
drowning, but traumatic injuries are also a major concern.
The physical effect of people being washed through debris
such as cars, trees, and other stationary objects causes
injuries such as broken limbs and head injuries.
14. Bomb Man-made Air-blast effects caused by nuclear explosions are
explosion comparable to those produced by conventional explosives.
Humans may be injured directly by the shock wave by
rupturing eardrums or lungs, or by being hurled at high
speeds, but most deaths are caused by falling buildings and
flying debris. Radiation of heat.
15. House Man-made Mold, mites, and other allergens linked to poor health will
thrive in substandard housing due to water leaks, poor
ventilation, dirty carpets, and pest infestation. Indoor cold
has been linked to a variety of health problems, including an
elevated risk of cardiovascular disease.
