Second Draft Folio Gui

The document investigates the relationship between the slopes and y-intercepts of tangents to the exponential functions f(x) = e^x and g(x) = e^-x. It identifies the equations of tangents to the functions for different values of a. It is shown that the product of the slopes of tangents is always -1. The y-intercepts of tangents are also identified, and it is shown that the product of the y-intercepts is related to the value of a.

Tangent to the Exponential Function Investigation

Introduction

Part A -Identifying the relationship between the slopes of the two tangents
In this section, two exponential function 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑒 ! and 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑒 "! is given, while 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑒 "! is the reflection of 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑒 ! ,
vice versa. The procedure of finding out the equation of tangent is conducted at the point where x is variable represented in a.
Four scenarios are taken in algebraic approach when a = 1, 2,3,4 to 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑒 ! and 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑒 "! to observe the relationship
between two tangents and two respective functions. Moreover, slope of the tangents to two given funtioncs is figuring out from the
equation of tangent, as the correlation of two slop with the same a value is calculated from the product of two slopes. All the
resultes are garthered in the sumarised table as well as illustrated on the graphs. To achieve the exspected outcome, the conjecture
of equations of tangents to 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑒 ! and 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑒 "! is developed by two method which are point-slope formular for a line and
solving equation of tangent.

Equation of tangent
𝑦 = 𝑓 ! (𝑥) × (𝑥 − 𝑎) + 𝑓(𝑥)
𝑦 = 𝑔! (𝑥) × (𝑥 − 𝑎) + 𝑔(𝑥)

𝑦 = 3𝑒 5 [𝑥 − (ℎ − 1)] 𝑦 = −3𝑒 "5 [𝑥 − (ℎ + 1)] 𝑦 = −3𝑒 5 [𝑥 − (ℎ − 1)] 𝑦 = 3𝑒 "5 [𝑥 − (ℎ + 1)]

𝑦 = 3𝑒 5 [0 − (ℎ − 1)] 𝑦 = −3𝑒 "5 [0 − (ℎ + 1)] 𝑦 = −3𝑒 5 [0 − (ℎ − 1)] 𝑦 = 3𝑒 "5 [0 − (ℎ + 1)]
𝑦 = 3𝑒 5 [−(ℎ − 1)] 𝑦 = −3𝑒 "5 [−(ℎ + 1)] 𝑦 = −3𝑒 5 [−(ℎ − 1)] 𝑦 = 3𝑒 "5 [−(ℎ + 1)]
𝑦 = −3𝑒 5 (ℎ − 1) 𝑦 = 3𝑒 "5 (ℎ + 1) 𝑦 = 3𝑒 5 (ℎ − 1) 𝑦 = −3𝑒 "5 (ℎ + 1)

The product of the two y-intercept

[−3𝑒 5 (ℎ − 1)] × [3𝑒 "5 (ℎ + 1)] [3𝑒 5 (ℎ − 1)] × [−3𝑒 "5 (ℎ + 1)]
= −3 × 3 × 𝑒56("5) (ℎ − 1)(ℎ + 1) = 3 × −3 × 𝑒56("5) (ℎ − 1)(ℎ + 1)
= −9 × 𝑒 7 (𝑎 − 1)(𝑎 + 1) = −9 × 𝑒 7 (𝑎 − 1)(𝑎 + 1)
= −9(ℎ + 1)(ℎ − 1) = −9(ℎ + 1)(ℎ − 1)
