1. Write an essay about advantages and disadvantages of living in a big city (about 150-200
words).
Nowadays, more and more people choose to live in a big city. It can't be denied that
living here has many benefits. However, in reality, it has both advantages and
disadvantages.
Firstly, a big city have many advantages such as advanced technology, convenient
transportation, high quality education. Excellent schools are mostly situated in cities. It
means that we will have broaden our knowledge more easily and have more job
opportunities.
Secondly, we will have many different ways to spend our free time. There are a lot of
kinds of entertainment like theatres, cinema or shopping centre. Moreover, there are
many sports centres where we can practise our hobby. And finally, it is easier to find a
good healthcare. We will have higher living standards.
However, living here also brings us a lot of disadvantages. The first is environment
pollution due to the increase of factories based on industrialization and modernization.
Smoke makes us risk of getting serious diseases. Also, we have lack of space for
outdoor activities. The second drawback we have to face is Higher Crime Rates like
drug addiction or robbery. And the last is the high cost of living.
There are good things as well as bad things of living in the city. However, I believed
that it is generally considered to be beneficial in multiple ways.
2. Do you agree or disagree with the statement “We shouldn’t use examination results to
assess a student’s ability because they are unfair indications.”?
Nowadays degree and examination results are very essential . They help people can
see students’ strength and weakness and address areas for growth. However I think we
should not use to assess a student’s ability because of some reasons.
Firstly, Students can cheat, sneak information into exams even though they are closely
monitored and there are severe penalties. They result in students only working toward
passing the class without learning. It is unfair that students who do not cheat for a fair
assessment of their abilities. Secondly, Examinations do not show if someone has
truly acquired certain knowledge. Candidates can score high by revising hard before,
only to forget immediately afterwards. Exams test memory more than analysis,
creativity, or real understanding.
Thirdly, examination results depend on the opinion of the individual examiner. The
same paper marked by two different examiner could get completely different results.
Finally, examining does not reflect how we use intelligence and knowledge in the real
world. We need a much more interactive relationship. And it is disparity between how
we are examined in the exams.
In sum , examinations are, at times, good and necessary ways of testing a student’s
ability to commit information to memory. However, they are not too important to
appreciate someone.
3. “Our Ministry of Education is planning to combine the examination into university and
General Certificate of Secondary Education examination into one examination”. To what
extent do you agree or disagree with this solution?
Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training has announced that one national exam
will determine high school graduation and the exam results will be used as the basis
for university entrance admission.
In my opinion, this solution will solve some problems. Firstly, it decreases pressure on
students and their families. Formely, Vietnamese students took two tests after
completing 12 years in school: one was for high school graduation and the next was
for university entrance. Both were high stakes tests.
However, a single cut-off score for the exam may be too high for high school
graduation but still too low for university entrance selection.
Standardized tests used in these large scale national assessments do not measure
students’ important achievements so different assessment methods should be used.
Secondly, It will cost less money very much. Students can do this test just at their
hometown without having to go to big cities where organizes these examinations.
However, there is a drawback. If they fail the test, they would have to wait another 12
months to retake it , together with the next batch of graduating students. Within this
period, these students can not apply for any college or for a job that requires a high
school diploma.
4. Write an essay about one of the famous festivals in your hometown (about 150-200 words).
I was born in Vung Tau – a coastal city. It does not have many exciting modern
festivals. Instead, traditional folk festivals often take place, bearing the mark of
culture, customs and beliefs of local people. And one of the famous festivals is
Festival nghinh Ong.
According to fishermen in Vung Tau coastal area, Ong fish (whale) is their savior and
supporter every time the ship is in distress at sea. Therefore, Nghinh Ong festival is
held every year from 16th – 18th of the 8th lunar month at Ca Ong mausoleum on
Hoang Hoa Tham street, Vung Tau city. This is the biggest water festival of Vung
Tau fishermen and has been recognized by the National Administration of Tourism as
one of the 15 largest festivals in the country.
Common activities at Nghinh Ong festival are procession of fish at sea, worshiping
heroic heroes, singing chao chao, singing baa, martial arts performance, dragon lion
dance, performance and folk games such as : blindfolded, catching goats, fishing,
blindfolded, etc.
The festival is a chance for Vung Tau people to express their wish for peace,
favorable sea, and favorable conditions when going to the beach.

with this statement.
Today, we cannot imagine our lives without the Internet. there is no doubt that
Internet usage is exploding and has become an integral part of our lives and essential
for our progress.
With using smartphones or computers we can use it for many different purposes.
Firstly we can Search information. it will provide us valuable and useful data and
knowledge at any time, instantly upon our request. Also we can attend classes and
take exams online at our home.
Secondly, we want to know what is happening around the world immediately without
waiting for the morning newspaper or the news broadcast on their TV or radio.
Thirdly, The first significant and most popular use is Email and data transfer. It has
enabled easy, faster communication.

approach. We can make new friends via Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Also the

anything online at any time.

6. You have attended an English course in the New English Institute for 1 week, but you are
not satisfied with the learning and teaching condition, which is much different from its
advertisement. Write a complaint letter to the director of the Institute.
Dear Mr David!
I am Linda, a student of Class 6th C Ielts in your English Institute. This is my second
week I study at the centre but I have already dissatisfied with the teaching and
learning conditions here. Therefore, I am writing in order to mention some problems
as well as ask for improvements in many aspects.
First of all, the class has too many students. How can the teachers lecture when the
students keep on talking? And more importantly, it will affect the ability to improve
one’s knowledge of English.
Secondly, there are not enough over-head projectors, radios and fans. In some periods,
the teachers are not well-qualified as they showed up their confusion as well as
inexperience on being asked difficult questions. Furthermore, it is the lack of
textbooks and there is no relevance between the teachers’ speeches, their teaching
methods and the textbooks’ contents.
I believe it’s high time your institute found out solution to above problems. It would
be splendid if your institute could start upgrading the facilities or hiring proffesional
language teachers. The content matter of study would also be another important
factor.
I will continue to take courses but I hope these problems will be considered. I am
looking forward to see some remarkable changes in a near future.
Sincerely,
My
7. “The idea of going overseas for university is an exciting prospect for many people”. Do you
think it is better for us to study overseas? State your own opinion (about 150-200 words).
Nowadays, as the world we live in has become a global village, more and more
students tend to go abroad for university study.
The most obvious advantage is the real-life use of a different language. Being
encircled by native speakers affords the students the scope to immerse themselves in
the language, which can expedite their fluency and retention. Although they can study
in their country, it cannot compare with the constant use of the language in academic
and everyday life.
Secondly, studying abroad exposes students a new horizon of learning and teaching,
different cultural perspective on their subjects, and access to resources. Moreover,
they will get a better insight into the foreign culture and their work related
requirements.
Another reason is despite hard issues they may encounter such as living conditions,
the barrier of languages or cultures, it opens up a chance to break their limitations and
confidently set up their independence. this would offers them a new and different
perspective of the world.
Last but not the least, studying abroad enhances job opportunity. Potential employers
are very interested in foreign degrees as it denotes the student’s ability to adapt new
situations.
In sum, students are far better off having studied in a different country despite the
challenges that they will inevitably face.
