Theory:
If p-type and n-type semi conductors are joined together at a junction a pn-juntion diode is
formed. The holes and electrons are combine , but only for a narrow region right at junction. The
reason for a narrow region of recombination is that p type becomes negatively charged as holes
moves to n type , and n type becomes negatively charged as electrons move to the p type. The
narrow region is called “depletion region” or the space charge region or the space charge region
because it contains no mobile carriers .
If a dc voltage applied across the pn-junction diode , the p type is made positive with respect to n
type are forced closer together. Therefore the probability of majority charge carriers passing
across the depletion region or barrier is increased.
In fig 1.1 b, the diode is now reversed biased , the potential barrier at the junction is increased
and the width of depletion region is increased. The effect is to reduce the probability of majority
charge carriers crossing the barrier. The reverse current IR , due to minority carriers is very
small.

Procedure:
 Set the module IT-1005 and then locate the diode block
 According to fig 1.2 and 1.3 complete experiment circuit with short circuit clips.

 Apply +12V to +12V terminal

 Using the voltmeter , measure and record the voltage between the end terminals 1 and 3
of VRI EVRI =_____________V
 The VRI is used for adjusting the voltage applied to diode DI and the R1 is a current
limit resistor for protecting the diode D1.
 Turn VRI is used for adjusting the voltage across R1 to obtain 0.1 V
 This will obtain a forward current If= 0.1 Ma through DI
 When the IF reaches 0.1 m A, measures the voltage across D1 and record it as VF in table
1.1 complete the other measurements of VF values in table 1.1 by adjusting the VRI.

Plot the recorded values of IF and VF of table 1.1 on the graph of fig 1.4 .

 Then draw a smooth curve through these plotted points. This curve is the IF

Question Answers:
Q. NO:1
Diode is for AC or for DC?
ANSWER:
When a diode is used with DC it either allows current to flow, or stops it. When it does allow
current to flow the overall voltage is reduced by the diodes forward voltage drop. When a diode
is used with AC it will only conduct during half of the cycle.
Q.NO:2
Why diode is used for DC?
ANSWER:
The primary purpose of a diode is to conduct electricity in one direction and not the other. When
a diode is used with DC it either allows current to flow, or stops it. When it does allow current

to flow the overall voltage is reduced by the diodes forward voltage drop.
