The traditional harvest festival, Pongal, is celebrated by Hindus on 13 January every
year. ‘Pongal’ means to have happiness, luck and success. This festival lasts for four days.
The celebration involves the boiling of sweet rice using milk and sugar.
On the third day of the celebration, also known as ‘Mattu Pongal’, cattle which are
treated as sacred and important by Hindus are given royal treatment. They are bathed and
their horns are polished. Their bodies are painted with bright colours. Tinkling bells and
flowers are also tied around their necks. The cattle are then fed with sweet rice.
On this day, bull fights take place as well. Young men get to show off and test their
strength against the bulls. It is a wonderful sight.

How was tea discovered? It is said that an emperor in China was resting under a
tree. As the servants were boiling some water for the emperor, some dried leaves from the
tree fell into the water. Being a curious man, the emperor tasted the water. He loved the
taste of it. It turned out that the leaves that had fallen into the water were tea leaves. From
then on, the emperor had to have a cup of tea every day.
Tea is said to be a healthy drink. Some people believe that it can lower the risk of
cancer and fight viruses in our body. China is one of the world’s largest tea producers. Tea
is also grown in countries like India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.
