Week 2 Assignement 2

Kim is a 17-month-old girl who has exhibited delays in language, physical, and social-emotional development due to medical conditions including encephalitis, spasticity, and seizures. She shows delays such as an inability to babble or hold her head up at 6 months. Early intervention services including speech therapy and physical therapy are recommended to help Kim communicate and move independently. Developmental assessments like the Bayley Scales and Battelle Developmental Inventory would evaluate her skills across domains.

Week 2 Assignment: Case Study About Kim

Based on the information in the case study, what is her developmental status according to the report?

According to the report, Kim’s development status is atypical because the following areas of Kim's

development are being impacted because of her disabilities.

What developmental domains does she exhibit delays?

Kim exhibits delay in language, physical, and social-emotional domains. For example, she exhibited delay

physically because at 6 months Kim was only able to hold her head up when in her adapted seat. Her

delay in language is evident in her not being able to make clear sounds and in her frustration when she

is not understood.

What factors do you think contributed to their developmental status?

I think Kim’s battle with cardiac anomalies, encephalitis, spasticity and seizures have contributed to her

developmental status. However, the adequate medical care she has received overtime due to early

intervention measures is helping her improve greatly.

Background

Kim Doe, who is currently 17 months of age, was referred to the early intervention program by her

pediatrician due to a failure to thrive because of encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), spasticity

(most likely due to cerebral palsy) and seizures.

Developmental Concerns

Kim has been hospitalized off and on for the majority of her first 16 months of life due to seizures,

numerous viral infections, and significant nutritional issues.

Kim has limited ways of communicating thoughts, wants, and needs. She makes throaty soundsand

gestures but does not babble.

Kim is challenged by her limited movement to be able to participate in independent feeding.

Kim attempts to initiate play with her older sister but is unable to move very far around the living room

on her own and is unable to tell her sister what she wants to play with.

Several times a day, Kim cries and fusses because her parents and sister do not always understand what

she wants or needs.

(Case study adapted from the Early Childhood Technical Assistance Center)Respond to the following

questions keeping in mind Kim's medical conditions and related concerns:

1. Which areas of Kim's development are/will be impacted because of her disabilities?(HINT:

Developmental Domains for ECI)

a. Communication & Language

b. Physical / Motor skills

c. Social Emotional
d. "Self-Help" / Adaptive

e. Potentially Cognitive as well - pending how encephalitis develops + seizure diagnosis

future potential anti-convulsant

2.Name at leasttwospecific developmental assessments you should use and explain why you would use

each one.

Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development Screening Test (Bayley-III ScreeningTest) - Able to be

individually administered in order to assess Kim's basic neurological development, auditory/visual

reception, verbal; and motor expression and cognitive process as these are all showing to be areas of

development where Kim is showing difficulty. Age level is infants from 3-24 months, and she is 17

months old. After obtaining an estimate for Kim's risk classification, she is more likely to receive the ECI

services she most likely will require. Battelle Developmental Inventory, Second Edition (BDI-2) - The

Bayley Scales may not provide enough feedback on Kim's adaptive needs - The Bastille is norm-

referenced butalso individually administered and would likely provide more helpful information on Kim's

social/emotional, adaptive, motor skills, communications and cognitive skills. The Bastille will also help

screen for Kim's school readiness, develop reasonable objective sand remediation plans.

3. Which early childhood interventions should be provided to Kim and her family and why? Discuss any

two interventions. Speech-language pathologist - in order to help Kim and her family work on Kim

communicating her wants and needs in a way that her family can understand and meet her

wants/needs. Physical therapist - in order to help Kim work towards independent feeding and moving

/playing independently. Another to consider would be nutrition services if Kim's "significant nutrition

issues" can also be addressed
