Persuasive Writing

▪ What is Persuasive Writing?


Persuasive writing is specifically written to persuade,
which is to say it convinces the reader to agree with a certain point of view. It is a form of
written communication intended to influence readers to accept a particular idea or
opinion and to inspire action. A wide variety of writings, such as criticisms, reviews,
reaction papers, editorials, proposals, advertisements, and brochures, utilize different
persuasion techniques to influence readers. It is a type of writing where writers utilize
logical arguments, and carefully chosen words and phrases.

▪ Importance of Persuasive Writing:


Persuasive writing helps students formulate
specific reasons for their opinions and provides an opportunity to research facts related to
their opinions. It plays an important role in our everyday lives. From the TV chef telling
us to cook healthy meals, to a magazine article detailing why we need to exercise
regularly – providing a point of view and backing it up with facts to persuade the reader,
is a critical skill for our kids to learn. Persuasive writing is logically structured and
thoroughly supported with evidence. It should seem logically inconsistent to disregard
them.

▪ Purpose of Persuasive Writing:


The purpose of persuasion in writing is to convince,
motivate or move readers toward a certain point of view, or opinion. The act of trying to
persuade automatically implies more than one opinion on the subject can be argued.
persuasive writing is concerned primarily with convincing the reader at any cost. Various
appeals are used to manipulate the reader. Persuasive writing has a definite bias, or lack
of objectivity. Its function is to change the mind of the reader or to move the reader to
action.
Because of its goal, the persuasive purpose is usually
the primary purpose in a piece of writing. But when combined with other purposes, the
persuasive purpose rises to the top.

▪ Pillars of Persuasive Writing:
There are 3 main pillars of persuasive writing techniques:
1) Ethos― (the ethical appeal): Ethos is the persuasive technique that appeals to an
audience by highlighting credibility. Ethos advertisement techniques invoke the superior
“character” of a speaker, presenter, writer, or brand. Ethos examples aim to convince the
audience that the advertiser is reliable and ethical.

2) Pathos― (the emotional appeal): Pathos appeals to the emotions and ideals of the
audience and elicits feelings that already reside in them. Pathos is a term used most often
in rhetoric as well as in literature, film and other narrative art.

3) Logos― (the logical appeal): Logos means to appeal to the audiences' sense of reason
or logic. To use logos, the author makes clear, logical connections between ideas, and
includes the use of facts and statistics. Using historical and literal analogies to make a
logical argument is another strategy.

▪ Categories of Persuasive Writing:


Persuasive writing can be categorized into five
types:
1) Rhetoric: Rhetoric is the art of persuasion through communication. It is a form of
discourse that appeals to people’s emotions and logic to motivate or inform.

2) Craftsmanship: Craftsmanship in persuasive writing involves employing language


effectively. This includes the use of appropriate vocabulary and grammar, clarity in
expressing ideas, and creating a logical flow of ideas.

3) Authenticity: To be authentic in your writing is to tap into the emotions present in your
story. As you're writing, think about how you felt, how you're feeling now, and what
thoughts were running through your mind as you retell an experience. Readers can sense
honest feelings.

4) Reflexivity: Reflexivity in persuasive writing involves the writer's critical self-reflection


on their own perspectives and potential biases.

5) Imagination: Imagination plays a key role in persuasive writing, especially in creating
engaging and compelling arguments. The writer can use creative approaches to present
their argument, including storytelling, metaphor, and vivid imagery. This can make the
argument more relatable and memorable.

1) Pick a topic you’re passionate about.
2) Know your audience.
3) Choose words wisely.
4) Adopt a strong writing structure.
5) Hook the reader’s attention.
6) Research both sides.
7) Draw a persuasion map.
8) Adopt a conversational tone.
9) Be empathetic.
10) Ask rhetorical questions.
11) Write a clear thesis statement.
12) Emphasize your point.
13) Repeat your main arguments.
14) Include analytical information.
15) Speak directly to the reader.

1) Argumentative Speeches: Rhetoric is the art of convincing through the word, the
foundation of the origins of politics and its application today.
2) Scientific Speeches: The foundations of the new scientific contributions are usually
reproduced in different areas with the aim of informing and convincing readers.
3) Advertisements: Brands use persuasive tools to describe a product and encourage its
consumption by highlighting its benefits.
4) Public Campaigns: Public bodies tend to disseminate initiatives that seek to improve the
quality of life of citizens by modifying their social behaviors.
