ErP Directive en

The ErP Directive 2009/125/EC replaced the EuP Directive, extending its scope to all energy-related products. It took effect in November 2009 and published implementing measures covering 10 product types. Producers must comply with ErP requirements, including CE marking. Commission Regulation 1275/2008 sets ecodesign requirements for standby and off mode power consumption of household and office equipment from 2010-2013. Commission Regulation 278/2009 sets ecodesign requirements for no-load power consumption and efficiency of external power supplies from 2010-2015.

New Directive – ErP Directive (2009/125/EC)

The EuP Directive is subsequently replaced by the ErP Directive 2009/125/EC published on 31 October 2009, with an extended
scope covering all energy-related products. The ErP Directive has taken effect since 20 November 2009. It published
Implementing Measures including 10 different types of measures.

Producers must comply with the ErP Directive's requirements, and follow the CE conformity assessment modules
to prepare product-related environmental technical-documentation file before sold on the EU market.

A. Commission Regulation (EC) No 1275/2008 – Standby & Off Mode

After 6 January, 2010, The European Regulation (EC) No. 1275/2008 implementing Directive 2005/32/EC of the
European Parliament and of the Council with regard to ecodesign requirements for standby and off mode electric
power consumption of electrical and electronic household and office equipment applies to energy-using products as Household appliances,
Information technology equipment, Consumer equipment and Toys, leisure and sports equipment that are designed for use with a nominal
voltage rating of 250 V or below.

Requirements are as following:

(d) Power management - NIL - When equipment is not providing the main function,
or when other energy-using product(s) are not
dependent on its functions, equipment shall, unless
inappropriate for the intended use, offer a power
management function, or a similar function, that
switches equipment after the shortest possible
period of time appropriate for the intended use of
the equipment, automatically into:
- Standby mode, or
- Off mode, or

B. Commission Regulation (EC) No 278/2009 – External Power supplies
After 27 April, 2010, The European Regulation (EC) No. 278/2008 implementing Directive 2005/32/EC of the European Parliament and of
the Council with regard to ecodesign requirements for no-load condition electric power consumption and average active efficiency of external
power supplies.

Requirements are as following:

NO-LOAD POWER CONSUMPTION AND AVERAGE ACTIVE EFFICIENCY
(a) One year after this Regulation has come into force:
The no-load condition power consumption shall not exceed 0,50 W.
The average active efficiency shall be not less than:
0.500 x Power Output (for Power Output < 1,0 W);
0.090 x ln (Power Output) + 0.500 (for 1.0 W ≤ P O ≤ 51.0 W);
0.850 (for Power Output > 51.0 W).
(b) Two years after this Regulation has come into force:
The no-load condition power consumption shall not exceed the following limits:

AC-AC external power supplies, except low AC-AC external power supplies, except low Low voltage external
voltage external power supplies voltage external power supplies power supplies

P O ≤ 51,0 W 0,50 W 0,30 W 0,30 W

P O > 51,0 W 0,50 W 0,50 W n/a

The average active efficiency shall be not less than the following limits:

AC-AC and AC-DC external power supplies, Low voltage external

except low voltage external power supplies power supplies

P O ≤ 1,0 W 0,480 · P O + 0,140 0,497 · P O + 0,067

1,0 W < P O ≤ 51,0 W 0,063 · ln(P O ) + 0,622 0,075 · ln(P O ) + 0,561
P O > 51,0 W 0,870 0,860

Products Not Covered / This Regulation shall not apply to:

(a) Voltage converters;
(b) Uninterruptible power supplies;
(c) Battery chargers;
(d) Halogen lighting converters;
(e) External power supplies for medical devices;
(f) External power supplies placed on the market no later than 30 June 2015 as a service part or spare part for an identical external power supply
which was placed on the market not later than one year after this Regulation has come into force, under the condition that the service part or
spare part, or its packaging, clearly indicates the primary load product(s) for which the spare part or service part is intended to be used with.
