During the growing season, orchard trees

CULTIVATE develop best where they can receive full sunlight for
6 or more hours per day because sunlight gives
energy to produce the nutrients that plants need.
Make sure that the soil is well cultivated which
means it should be loose and broken down to
smaller pieces. Moreover, it should be planted in a
well-drained soil with a depth of 3 feet or more. But
if there is proper watering of the plant, fruit trees can
be grown to as deep as 30-50 centimeters of good
topsoil. It is also important to prepare the surface of
the soil before planting. To produce high harvest, the
surface soil should be deep, soft, stable, well-
structured, fertile and cool.
Aside from getting the soil ready, roots of the
seedlings must also be examined. Broken roots must be
removed. Container-grown trees may have circling or
girdling roots which should be gently pulled-out from the
main root.
Place the tree in the hole and then fill it with the same
Girdling roots on trees. soil that was dug and press gently to eliminate large air
pockets.
SAQ-1. What are the things that you should consider in cultivating orchard trees?

WATER/IRRIGATE
Water is one of requirement for plants to grow healthy
and strong. So, it is very necessary that plants get enough
water to ensure its proper growth. Big orchards irrigate their
trees or it.
Hence, tree size, soil, weather and time of the year
determines the timing and quantity of water being applied to
orchard trees. First year trees do not require much additional
water until weather gets hot. For best growth, the soil in the
root zone should be moist at all times yet well drained. To
determine if moisture is sufficient, dig down about 4-6 inches
with a shovel and examine the soil in the root zone
sometimes.
Further, pouring too much water could create problems like encouraging disease on plants to
take place. To determine if the soil has correct wetness, just squeeze some of the soil in your hand. If
the soil forms a tight ball when you squeeze it, the soil is too wet. A soil with right amount of wetness
should crumble even when squeezed.

SAQ-2. What are the factors that will determine the amount of water that should
be applied on trees?

PRUNE To lessen wind damage, provide a strong structure and

increase fruit bearing area, young trees must be pruned or trimmed.
In the first four years of trees, inspect them regularly. Remove
branches with weak, narrow crotch angles where the bark is folded
into crotch. Don’t remove branches until the trees are at least one-
year-old.

FERTILIZE
Fertilization is important to all plants. Low supply of nutrients to
plants will result to weak plants and low quality of fruits. On the other hand,
the end results of over fertilization are weak growth, prone to attack by
diseases and sap sucking insect pests.
Organic fertilizers are from organic sources such as compost, cattle
manure, poultry droppings and domestic sewage. Organic matter
increases root growth and provide a wide range of nutrients and improves
the soil’s water-holding capacity.
To use organic matter, it must be well mixed with soil. An organic
fertilizer made of compost from manures or yard waste should be fully
decomposed and aged for six months before it is used around fruit plants.
Remember to keep fertilizers at least 20 cm away from the trunk and
apply it evenly under the canopy and out of the canopy until 30 cm past the
dripline or edge of it. In addition, make sure that newly fertilize plants
receive an ample amount of water to ensure the availability of nutrients in
the rooting zone.

A. Directions: Now let us check on how far have you learned in this lesson. Put a check (/) on
statements that are true and X on statements that are false.
__________1. Orchard trees need full sunlight to grow better.
__________2. Pruning of trees should be done when trees are full grown.
__________3. You can water the orchard trees as much as you want.
__________4. Girdling roots from container-grown trees must be removed before replanting.
__________5. Do not water plants after applying fertilizers.
__________6. Organic fertilizers are composed of chemicals that are artificially made.
__________7. Fruit trees must be planted in a well-drained soil.
__________8. Trimming of trees lessens wind damage and increases fruit yield.
__________9. Applying too much fertilizer is fine with fruit trees.
__________10. Tree size, soil, weather and time of the year determines the timing and quantity of

REMEMBER
Key Points
 Fruit trees can also be called orchard trees.
 Orchard trees develop best where they can receive full sunlight for 6 or more hours per day
and should be planted in a well-cultivated and well-drained soil with a depth of 1 meter or more.
 The timing and quantity of water that should be applied to orchard trees depends on tree size,
soil, weather and time of the year.
Key Points
 Pruning or trimming lessens wind damage, provide a strong structure and increase fruit bearing
area of fruit trees.
 Low supply of fertilizers to trees will result to low quality of fruits while over fertilization can
weaken the its growth and will be prone to attacks by diseases and pests.
