4. TECHNICAL OVERVIEW
4.1. Overview

This section describes the basic technical

features of the GDS devices. Refer to Section
12 for schematic diagrams, connector pin
assignments and other supporting information.

4.2. System Operation

The GDS is a gamma detection system intended to detect the presence of gamma emitting
radiopharmaceuticals in body tissues and organs. It consists of a console, detector probe cable,
power cord, and compatible detector probes. The detector probes have a CZT crystal that
detects and converts gamma energy into digital signals. The console processes the detected
gamma emissions and provides audio and visual feedback to the physician.
4.3. Processing Architecture
The GDS console contains a digital signal processor (DSP) that controls the operator interface
and processes the probe input signals including the formatting and statistical processes
associated with counting input pulses.
4.4. Operator Inputs
Operator control over the console is accomplished through the use of momentary pushbuttons
located on the front of the GDS console. Some buttons have multiple functionality,
differentiated by “press” and “press-and-hold”. Audible feedback of button presses is provided
electronically rather than mechanically.
Volume control for the signals is accomplished through a volume adjustment component
located on the front of the console. Clockwise rotation increases the volume, and counter-
clockwise decreases the volume.
4.5. Operator Outputs
The GDS console presents visual and audible information to the user. Operational state
indicators are provided to clearly indicate the operating mode of the system to the user.
Numeric displays present quantitative data for evaluation by the operator. A graphics display
and an audio speaker present information in a qualitative manner. Audible data is presented in
order to allow the surgeon to keep visually focused on the patient. The audible output produces
data and status information simultaneously.
4.6. Electronic Input/Output (I/O) Ports
There are two serial I/O ports located at the rear of the Model 2200 console and one on the
Model 2300. Do not connect unapproved equipment to these ports.

8
neoprobe® GDS - SERVICE MANUAL –00-0683 Rev. B Neoprobe Corporation ©2004, All Rights Reserved

4.7. Enclosure
The GDS enclosure is designed to comply with applicable global regulatory requirements for
safety (EN60601-1-1) and electromagnetic compatibility (EN60601-1-2, EN55011). To meet
design requirements, two housing pieces have interlocking ribs combined with a tongue and
groove joint to provide strength and a water seal. Rigidity of the enclosure is obtained by
screwing the front and rear housings together.
The exterior walls of the housings are angled to allow fluids to flow off of the enclosure. The
tongue and groove allows the placement of a gasket to prevent ingress of fluids at the seam
location. The buttons are designed to prevent entry of fluids while maintaining tactile feel and
feedback.
External components are resistant to most common disinfectants used to clean medical devices
outside of a sterile field.
4.8. Connectors and Cabling
The GDS console contains both externally accessible and internal cabling. Connectors and
cables meet applicable regulatory requirements and environmental conditions.
4.9. GDS Components
The GDS contains the following major items (refer to Figure 4.9-1 and to Section 11.7 for a
list of authorized service parts):
ƒ GDS Board (P301)
The GDS board processes inputs from the probe and generates control signals for the audio
output and visual displays. The GDS also processes operator inputs and electronic
input/output (I/O) of data with external devices. The GDS board includes electrically re-
programmable memory used for current and future software upgrades. A Texas Instruments
TMS320-series DSP operating at 150 MHz is the main processor device used on the GDS
board.

The GDS board contains an isolation barrier between the DSP and the interface circuitry for
the external probe. The isolation barrier includes ±12V and +5V isolated power supplies, and
digital optoisolators. Generation and conversion of analog probe signals is implemented on the
isolated section of the GDS board so that digital optoisolators can be used for all isolation to
preserve signal integrity over the intended range of operation.
ƒ Display Board (P300)
The display board serves as a mounting platform for the display components, switches, power
supplies, and the GDS board.
ƒ Auxiliary Board (P302 (2200) or P403 (2300))
The auxiliary board serves as a junction box for the rear housing and acts as a mounting point
for the I/O connectors and the radionuclide switch. The auxiliary board includes isolation for
the signal input/output ports. The auxiliary board for the Model 2300 also includes the
Bluetooth communications hardware for connection to wireless probes.

ƒ Power Supply (P340)

The +12VDC power supply is a medical grade universal input supply that accepts single phase
power between 85 and 264VAC and 47 to 63 Hz.
ƒ Cabling
There are a total of ten cables and one ground wire in the console. The cables consist of:
ƒ Auxiliary Board Cable (P325)
ƒ Probe Input Cable (P324)
ƒ Speaker Cable (P131)
ƒ Fan Cable Assembly (P350)
ƒ Line Filter Ground Cable (P125)

6. DISASSEMBLY, SERVICE PART INSTALLATION AND RE-ASSEMBLY

6.1. Overview
This section gives a pictorial step by step instruction for disassembling, repairing and re-
assembling your GDS. Neoprobe Corporation recommends that the servicing technician
complete the Service Checklist prior to returning a GDS to operation (See Section 11.8).
The audio/volume adjustment knob on the front of the console is susceptible to mechanical
shock. Never lay the unit face down on a hard surface without protecting the volume
adjustment knob. It is recommended that a hollow circular device capable of accepting the
volume adjustment knob, and providing a gap between the knob surface and any other contact
surface, be used to protect it during the disassembly/reassembly steps.
