1. (a) Compute the average rate of change of the function g(x) = 2x2 − 4x on the 3
interval [-1, 3].

f (3) − f (−1) (18 − 12) − (2 + 4)

Solution: Average rate of change = = =
3 − −1 4
0
=0
4
2 f (x + h) − f (x)
(b) Let f (x) = . Find and simplify the expression. 5
x h
Solution:

2 2
f (x + h) − f (x) −
= x+h x
h h
2x − 2(x + h) 2x − 2x − 2h
= =
xh(x + h) xh(x + h)
−2
=
x(x + h)

2. Consider the function f (x) = −2x2 + 4x − 3. Find its maximum or minimum value, 7
the intercepts and then sketch its graph.

Solution: We first complete the square:

f (x) = −2x2 + 4x − 3 = −2(x2 − 2x) − 3 = −2[(x − 1)2 − 1] − 3 = −2(x − 1)2 − 1.

Since its a concave up, it has a maximum value of -1

y-intercept is -3. No x-intercept

3. (a) Let f (x) = 2x , g(x) = x2 + 1, evaluate (f ◦ g)(x). 3

2 +1
Solution: (f ◦ g)(x) = f (g(x)) = f (x2 + 1) = 2x .
x
(b) Given that f (x) = , find f −1 (x) and determine its range. 6
3x − 6
x
Solution: f (x) = .
3x − 6
x
y= ⇒ 3xy − 6y = x
3x − 6
6y
⇒ 3xy − x = 6y ⇒ x(3y − 1) = 6y ⇒ x = .
3y − 1
6x
Interchange x and y we have y = 3x−1
.

Therefore f −1 (x) = 6x
3x−1
.

The range for f −1 is actually the domain for f (x).

We therefore require that 3x − 6 6= 0. Hence x 6= 2.

The range is (−∞, 2) ∪ (2, ∞).

4. Solve the following equation for x, by assuming that the domain for f and f −1 is 5
(−∞, ∞).

4 + f (x + 3) = −3; f −1 (−7) = 0.

Solution: 4 + f (x + 3) = −3 ⇒ f (x + 3) = −7

We apply f −1 both sides of the equation.

f −1 (f (x + 3)) = f −1 (−7) ⇒ x + 3 = 0 ⇒ x = −3.

5. Let f (x) = ex+1 . Sketch the graph of f −1 (x) and specify intercepts and asymptotes. 6

Solution: f −1 (x) = ln(x) − 1 is the graph of ln(x) shifted 1 unit downwards and
its asymptote is the y-axis the x-intercept is x = e

6. Solve the equation 8x+1 = 32 2. 5

7. Suppose that ln x = t and ln y = u. Write the following expression in terms of t and 5

u.
√ x
ln xy + ln( )
e

√ x √ √
Solution: ln xy + ln( ) = ln x + ln y + ln x − ln e.
e
1 1 3 1 3 1
= ln x + ln y + ln x − 1 = ln x + ln y − 1 = t + u − 1.
2 2 2 2 2 2

8. Given that xy = 8, evaluate 5 log2 x + 5 log2 y. 5

Solution:

5log2 x + 5log2 y = 5(log2 x + log2 y)

= 5log2 xy
= 5log2 8
= 5log2 23
= 15log2 2
= 15
