PROJECT P3-3: Foreground, middle ground, and background


FORM/MEDIA: collage
MATERIALS: sketchbook, pencils, colour media (dry mediums or paints and brushes).
WORKING TIME: 2 weeks

OBJECTIVE: through working out this project, the students will continuously practice the Creative
Process and the Critical Analysis Process, meanwhile, they will explore materials, tools and techniques
of collage. Students are expected to demonstrate an understanding of the element of design – Space at the
points of:
- foreground, middle ground, and background to give illusion of depth.

ASSIGNMENT:
Students will take one of the following prompts to create personal artwork:
 Tired
 A story happening on a rainy day.

Requirements:

 Students will apply the Creative Process to create the artwork to communicate their personal
emotions or ideas related to the prompts.
 Students are expected to apply the knowledge and skills of elements and principles of design,
materials, tools, techniques, and/or technologies learned in the current as well as the previous
projects effectively to create their art.
 Students are free to take their favorite media/subject matter other than the given media/prompt to
create their artwork. However, a title must be given to the artwork.
 All students are expected to comply with academic honesty to ensure the product is personal and
original. Plagiarism is prohibited strictly.

Deliverables:

 Final Artifact/Artwork: Your final design solution - the culmination of your creative play,
experimentation, research, and efforts.
 Self-critique: share your creative process and final artwork with the adjudicators (classmates,
teacher and/or parents) via an oral self-critique (maximum of 60 seconds).

Knowledge learning:
Ground plane. The perceived space of a composition. Its parts are classified as follows:

- Background. The part of a composition that appears to be farthest from the viewer or behind the
other objects.
- Foreground. The area of a picture that appears to be closest to the viewer and in front of the other
objects. It is often at the bottom of the picture plane.
- Middle ground. The part of a composition that appears to be in the middle of the picture plane.

CLASS PROCESS
Class Preparation (homework before the class starts):
Think about the questions related to the given prompts in the assignment:
 What is the theme and subject matter of your artworks? Who/what has inspired you? Do you
have a clear or strong emotion/feeling to express through the artwork? What’s that?
 What will your art piece look like? Be detailed! Your artwork should be able to be visualized
from your description.
 What medium will you use? Why? List the specific materials, tools, and equipment that you will
use (ex: type of paper or painting materials/tools).
 What specific techniques/strategies do you intend to use? What problems/difficulties/obstacles do
you anticipate you may have in executing this artwork? Why? What are some possible solutions
to resolving these obstacles (may be both technical and creative)?

Session 1.
A. Visual Gallery – Appreciating and learning (20 min).
B. Inspiring and challenging – discuss the prompts (20 min).
C. Imagining and generating – produce a variety of thumbnails (30 min).
# Homework: working out a variety of sketches or detailed parts of the composition through
exploring and experimenting according to the determined thumbnail.
Session 2
D. Planning and focusing – determine the final composition and relevant form and set up plan for
materials, working schedule (20 min)
E. Finalize the draft sketch for the good copy. (20 mins)
F. Producing preliminary work (30 mins)

 Proposal preparation:

artwork? And how the elements and principles are used to communicate the message?

 The Critical Analysis Process:

- What is my first impression?
2. Description
- What do I see when I examine the work closely?
3. Analysis and Interpretation
- How are the elements organized, combined, or arranged to evoke ideas, feelings, and
images?
4. Expression of an Informed Point of View
- Have my thoughts or feelings about the work changed since your first impressions? If so,
how have they changed? Is there anything I have learned that I can apply to my own work?
5. Consideration of Cultural Context
- What interesting things did I learn about the artist’s life and work?
