0 Introduction
This document gives an overview of the exact software versions in the release and the changes and
known open issues for the Dialog R2.4.2.

The changes are referenced to the official R2.4.2 and the R2.4.1 and are classified according to:

• New feature

• Enhancement

• Bug Fix

• Other (e.g. workaround implementation to reduce severity)

1 Release Main Features

This section summarizes changes and new main roadmap features available in Dialog R2.4.2.

1.1 Remote Beam Selection

Modem software version R4.6.3.x or higher

This feature allows modem end-user to temporarily switch to another beam

• This feature allows to overrule the AIBS or OTA beam switch in case the selected beam has link
performance issues or suffers from degradation

This feature allows modem end-user to temporarily “pin” to the active beam

• For troubleshooting purposes

ST Engineering iDirect Proprietary

Confidentiality: Company Confidential Page 3 of 20 Version 1.4
1.2 AIBS without GXT/GPS
Modem software version R4.6.3.x or higher

This feature allows the modem to always try to maintain/restore connectivity automatically (via AIBS) and
minimize outage in following cases:

1. No GXT data is available or accessible

1. No GPS data is available or the received GPS is invalid

With this feature the modem will do round-robin through the programmed beams and go live on one that it
obtains FWD lock on

1.3 MRC Phase Noise Profile

The 3 profiles below allow a service provider to optimize their network efficiency depending on the quality
of the terminal population, as each terminal can be assigned to a specific MxDMA-MRC waveform profile
via terminal provisioning GUI:

• Default: default, a compromise between efficiency and phase noise resilience. This corresponds
with the MRC phase noise mask with -70dBHz@1kHz.

• Optimized for efficiency: More efficient, but more prone to phase noise. This corresponds with
the MRC phase noise mask with -80dBHz@1kHz.

• Optimized for resilience: Least Efficient, but will overcome nearly any phase noise mask. This
corresponds with the MRC phase noise mask with -60dBHz@1kHz.

ST Engineering iDirect Proprietary

Confidentiality: Company Confidential Page 4 of 20 Version 1.4
For example, MRC terminals with high amount of link phase noise (e.g. low quality BUC) can be assigned
a set of transmit modes that are more resilient to phase noise.
This feature gives extra flexibility for service providers to make trade-off between CAPEX and OPEX.

1.4 MRC Phase Noise Measurement

Performance of digital modems can be highly affected by system phase noise. The phase noise will
typically come from imperfect frequency references used in up and down conversion steps in an RF
chain. Being able to estimate the phase noise at the receive side is important for system level trouble
shooting and to react appropriately in a controller.
Having data on phase noise estimation is very valuable in showing that the root cause is for example the
phase noise profile of the BUC in the terminal installation.

This feature introduces phase noise estimations being available in TSDB per terminal per beam, so that
customer can track through Grafana. It is also available via MRC controller GUI.

Example of phase noise measurements in MRC Controller GUI:

Example of phase noise measurement in Grafana:

1.5 Max Symbol Rate per terminal

In case a terminal is using a modcod with a high protection level, this could result in consuming a higher
symbol rate to respect the CIR setting, causing SLA violations to the rest of the terminals on the same
link

ST Engineering iDirect Proprietary

Confidentiality: Company Confidential Page 5 of 20 Version 1.4
With this feature we introduce a maximum symbol rate per terminal in the forward link.

This parameter is added at the service profile for transport-based terminals.

1.6 Dual-, triple-band ODU mobility support

Only on modem release 4.6.5.x
Mobile operators use dual (C, Ku) and even tri-band (C, Ku, Ka) antennas.

Currently there is a huge operational overhead to switch ODUs in the modem when vessel is moving
across beams in different frequency bands

With this feature, the modem will interact seamlessly with the ACU of these antennas via OpenAMIP and
support beam switching between beams in different bands.

ST Engineering iDirect Proprietary

Confidentiality: Company Confidential Page 6 of 20 Version 1.4
Supporting multi-band also means that the hub operator can configure different modem line up settings in
NMS for the different bands, allowing to optimize logon transmit power for each band.

1.7 Dual Personality MDM5010

Only on modem release 4.6.5.x

Single platform for high speed VSAT and SCPC

Switch between VSAT and SCPC at any time (requires reboot and SW license to switch to SCPC)

Super intuitive GUI, focused on usability

Highest rates in the business for SCPC, 220 Msps / 1.6 Gbps including CinC

The new hardware will also support dual Tx/Rx needed for MEO operation

Existing MDM5010’s (HW-01) can not be upgraded to support the SCPC stand alone mode

1.8 GTP acceleration for MDM2510

GTP acceleration commonly used to accelerate LTE traffic is now also supported on MDM2510 (next to
MDM3310).

Modem software version R4.6.3.x or higher

1.9 SNMP OID for modem reboot

This feature introduces an SNMP OID in the MIB files with different messages about the last reboot of a
modem (e.g Reboot called from GUI, Loss of power supply voltage, Watchdog timer). Please consult the
modem manual for more details.

ST Engineering iDirect Proprietary

Confidentiality: Company Confidential Page 7 of 20 Version 1.4
1.10 Support 5k mobile terminals and 200 beams
Improved scalability on both CNMS and Hub Module level. A configuration item is added so that
advanced terminal monitoring data will not be stored in DMA anymore to reduce load on DMA.

2 Upgrade Path and Backward Compatibility

2.1 Upgrade
Upgrading to this version should be done using upgrade tooling and upgrade procedure provided by ST
Engineering Europe.

Full upgrade needs to be performed coming from release 2.4.1.2 or older version and on all 1-IF, 4-IF and
X-IF non-cloud platforms.

From release 2.4.1.3 onwards and on X-IF cloud platforms only, the light weight update can be
performed.

Please take into account that due to some bugs, there are some limitations on the upgrade scenario's:

• non-CLOUD platforms requires a full upgrade when upgrading to 2.4.2.0 or higher, because the
release contains a new kernel

• CLOUD NMS modules require a full upgrade when upgrading to 2.4.2.1 or higher, because Light
Weight Update has an issue due to the new mysql version combined with adding the default
keycloak database (note that this issue also exists if keycloak is not used)

• CLOUD HUB modules require a full upgrade if the old release is DIALOG CLOUD 2.4.1.2 or
lower.

• CLOUD HUB modules support LWU (in addition to full upgrade) if the old release is DIALOG
CLOUD 2.4.1.3 or higher

2.2 Compatibility
This Dialog® software release is compatible with the following terminal software version:

• MDM2x00 R 4.4.0.x

• MDM2x10 R 4.6.3.x

• MDM2x10 R 4.6.5.x

• MDM3x00 R 4.4.0.x

• MDM3310 R 4.6.3.x

• MDM3310 R 4.6.5.x

• MDM50x0 R 4.6.3.x

• MDM50x0 R 4.6.5.x

As part of the upgrade procedure this Dialog® release is compatible with the terminal software version:

• MDM2xx0 R 4.3.3.x and 4.4.0.x and R 4.6.1.x

ST Engineering iDirect Proprietary

Confidentiality: Company Confidential Page 8 of 20 Version 1.4

• MDM50x0 R 4.3.3.x and 4.4.0.x and R 4.6.1.x

• Any terminal with a version below the ones mentioned should be upgraded before it becomes
operational.

• Major: While the system is not completely down, it affects severely primary functionalities
(the traffic, billing and maintenance capabilities).

• Normal: Component down/degraded resulting in service difficult to use. Not critical but
restricted function or operational impact.
