B. Motivation

I will give you a scenario. For instance, you

have two suitors who are James Reid and
Daniel Padilla.

(Two boys from this class will portray the

artists.)

You are so beautiful.

What if James Reid will tell you these I love you!
messages: I am willing to do anything for you.

You are lovely as a flower.

While Daniel Padilla will tell you these kinds I will offer you the moon and the stars.
of messages: You captured my heart.
You are the love of my life.

I would choose Daniel over James.

Who would you choose between the two? Is it
James or Daniel? Because you will feel very special with
Daniel’s sweet choice of words than James’
Why would you choose him? ordinary words.

All right! Daniel used figurative language

while James just used the ordinary or literal
language. It is about the Figures of Speech.

So, based on this activity, what do you think is

our lesson for today?

Yes! That’s correct! Our lesson for today is all

about Figures of Speech.

C. Lesson Proper

Our lesson for today is about figures of speech.

In this lesson we will be dealing with the
following objectives:

 Recognize the Figures of Speech,

 Identify the Figures of Speech used in
sentences,
 Appreciate literature through
constructing meaningful sentences
using the figures of speech. Figures of Speech expresses figurative
meaning and not literal meaning.
Based from the given activity, how can you
define figures of speech? (The students will read)

Excellent! Everyone please read the definition.

Figures of speech are non-literal words or

phrase that is use for rhetorical or vivid effect.
It also adds color and meaning to our ideas.
These are used to produce strong feelings or
emotions and help us create images in the
minds of our readers and listeners. Yes Ma’am!

We have different types of figures of speech.

Are you excited to know them?

Excellent! We have tons of figures of speech

but we will just tackle those most commonly
used like Simile, Metaphor, Personification and
Hyperbole.

Can you identify which figure of speech was

used on the following example? Simile Ma’am

Great! The first type of figures of speech is

simile. It is comparing two unlike things using
like or as.
shoes and the diamonds are the two unlike
Example: The shoes sparkles like diamonds. things in the sentence.

What are the two unlike things compared in the The word used to compare the two unlike
sentence? things is like.

Exactly! What is the word used to compare the

two unlike things?

Correct! When you compare the sparkle of

shoes to diamonds, using the words like or as (The students will give their own examples)
then that is simile.
Now give your own example of simile. None Ma’am

You are all very good! Do you have any

question?

Now, let’s proceed to the second type of

figures of speech. Anyone can guess based on It is Metaphor Ma’am
the examples

(The student will read)

Bravo! Can you please read the definition?

Metaphor is a complete comparison of two

unlike things. It doesn’t use the words like and
as.

• Example: He is a walking encyclopedia.

Him and encyclopedia were compared
What are things that are being compared directly in the sentence.
directly in the sentence?
(The students will provide examples)
Correct! Now give me your own example.
(The students will clap)
Give yourself a clap!
None Ma’am
Do you have any question or clarification?

For the third type of figures of speech, anyone

can guess. It is hyperbole ma’am

Exactly! We have the hyperbole. It is an

exaggeration which may be used for emphasis
and humor. Hyperboles are used in speaking
and writing for effect or to make a boring story
more interesting.
No Ma’am
Example: I have a mountain of homework.
Do you think you can really have a homework
that is as high as the mountain?
Therefore, it is just an exaggeration.

Another example: I have told you a million

times to clean your room!

How someone could tell you a million times to

clean your room? Therefore, it is just a
hyperbole.
(The students will cite their own example)
What about give me your own example?

Exactly! And for the last type of figures of

speech, anyone can guess.

It is personification Ma’am

On point! We have the personification. It is

giving human traits or characteristics to
inanimate or non-living things

Example: The trees dance back and forth in the

wind. No Ma’am

Do trees can dance?

Of course not, the example is just referring to

the way that the tree’s long branches sway in
the wind. Dancing Ma’am

What is the given characteristic of a human

acted by the tree?
(The students will cite their own example of
personification)

Correct! Now give your own example

Very Good! None Ma’am

Do you have any question regarding our Yes Ma’am

lesson?

All clear? Are you sure?

Simile, Metaphor, Hyperbole and
D. Generalization Personification.

What are the four types of figures of speech

again?
Simile- Comparing two unlike things using
like or as
What is simile?
Metaphor- Comparing two unlike things
without using like or as
What is metaphor?
Hyperbole-A major exaggeration or
overstatement

What is hyperbole? Personification- Giving human traits or

characteristics to something that isn’t human
What is personification?

Excellent! You were able to recognize and

identify the figures of speech.

E. Application

I will group you into 5, count 5,10,15,20,25

and then back to 5.

 List down the sentences that use figures

of speech in the story.
 Identify what figure of speech was used
in each sentence.

Toby was totally lost, as any needle in a

stack of hay. He already cried a bucket of tears
finding his way home. He must have wandered
off from his family during their morning hike
because around noon he realized that he was all
alone in the middle of the wide whispering
woods. Thonk! Thunk! Went his feet on the
soft pine needles that covered the ground like a
soft brown blanket. Birds tweeted and tweeted
from the sky-scraping branches of trees, but
there was no sound of his family. “Mom!
Dad!” he screamed! He was as anxious as a
fish out of water to find his family before
evening. The thought of spending a night in the
woods alone was a scary one that made his
heart dances a fearful frenzied jig in his chest.
Heaving a sigh, Toby tiredly trudged on.
