Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Science 4 Self-Learning Module 2 on Materials that Float and

Sink

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:

This module is designed and written to make the lesson more

interesting and to provide lifelong learnings. The lesson helps you
understand more about matter and how to group them easily
according to their properties. It will guide you to master the lesson
on the ability of materials to float and sink. The scope of this
module permits it to be used in many different learning situations.
The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of
students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can
be changed to correspond with the other learning materials you
are now using.
The module is about materials that float and sink.
After going through this module, you are expected to:
a. identify and classify materials that float and sink;
b. apply knowledge on the use of materials that float and sink
on the real-life situation; and
c. appreciate the use of materials that float and sink in our
day to day activities.

RECAP

Look at the picture and read the sentence carefully.

Underline the correct answer. The first one is done for you.

1. A ball is made of (rubber, metal). It (can, cannot)

absorb water.
2. A spoon is made of (rubber, metal). It (can, cannot)
absorb water.
3. A pillow is made of (cotton wool, rubber). It (can,
cannot) absorb water.
4. An eyeglass is made of (cloth, glass). It (can, cannot)
absorb water.

5. A jacket is made of (cloth, plastic). It (can, cannot)

absorb water.

6. A tissue is made of (paper, rubber). It (can, cannot)

absorb water.
LESSON

Materials have their own ability to behave on water. Some

materials stay on top of the water, submerged partway down and
others fall at the bottom. Let us study each concept one by one.

Take a look at the pictures below. Observe the things in the

water.

Figure 1-floater (salbabida) made from rubber Figure 2- Bottle with cap made from plastic

When you put these materials in water, they stays on top as

shown in the pictures. These materials float on water because they
are light. Float means that material stays on top of the liquid.
Materials made from rubber and plastic floats in water.

An object’s shape can affect its ability to float. Some materials

float no matter what their shapes- such as Styrofoam and balsa
wood.

Figure 1- Styrofoam ball floating on dock Figure 2- Balsa made of wood

Another property of a material is its ability to sink in water.

Sink means that material moves slowly downwards or goes down
to the bottom of the liquid.
Take a look at the pictures. What are their characteristics

Figure 1- glass bottle Figure 2- stone Figure 3- metal spoon

Materials made from glass, stone, and metal sinks whatever

size they are. Some sink very fast because they are heavy while
some sink very slowly. You can try a metal paper clip if you have
at home and a pebble. Observe how fast or slow these materials
as they sink on water.
Do you know that some materials float at first but then sink
as they absorb water? Yes, it is true because as the material
absorbs water or takes in water on through holes it gets heavy and
sinks eventually. Materials like a sponge, cotton ball, paper, and
cloth need to absorb water before it sinks. Try to do it when you
wash dishes, put the sponge in the water, and observe what will
happen. You can also observe it when you help your mother wash
your clothes.
ACTIVITIES

For us to learn more about materials that absorb water, let

us try to use the materials you have at home and answer the
Activity 1 “LET IT FLOAT OR LET IT SINK” you can do the
activity together with your little brother or sister, if you have.

ACTIVITY 1- “LET IT FLOAT OR LET IT SINK”

What to do:
1. Get your toys and a basin, half-full of water. Be careful with
water not to spill on the floor, you or someone might slip on it.
2. Put your toys one by one in the basin. Observe whether it
will float, sink or will float at first and sink afterward.
3. Write your answer in the Venn diagram.

but still sink

Guide Questions:
1. What are the differences between the characteristics of
materials that float and the materials that sink?

2. How are you going to dispose the materials that float and
sink?

3. What will you do with the materials that float or sink that
will no longer be used? Can you reuse these materials?
4. To conserve water, what will you do with water after
using it?

Let’s have another activity. Look at the materials below. If you

are familiar with these materials, you can easily identify the
materials that float and sink just by looking at the picture.

ACTIVITY 2- “WILL I FLOAT OR WILL I SINK?”

Direction: Identify whether the material will float or sink. Put a
checkmark on the proper column.
Material Float Sink
Example: fork /
1.leaves
2. diapers
3.tin cans
4.shampoo wrappers
5.tissue papers

ACTIVITY 3 - “WILL I STAY ON TOP OR FALL AT THE

BOTTOM?”
Direction: Look at the picture then identify whether it will float or
sink on water by filling in the blanks.

1. will sink while will _________ on water.

2. will ________while will ________on water.

3. will _______while will _____ on water.

4. will _________ while will _______ on water.

5. will _______while will _____ on water.

WRAP-UP

To summarize what you have learned, answer the Activity.

Choose your answer inside the parenthesis and write it on the
blank.
Materials that float in water are usually_________ (light,
heavy) which is made from ________, and______, (plastic, metal,
rubber, glass) while materials that sink in water are _________
(light, heavy). It made from_____________ and ____________
(plastic, metal, rubber, glass).

VALUING

Look at the boat. This boat or raft is used for local

transportation or a way of living like fishing or for recreation
“kayak”.

Figure 1- Man using the boat made of wood Figure 2 _ Raft made of bamboo for fishing
Some kids of your age or younger don’t know how to swim.
These two can help and save when you are in water in case of
emergency.

Figure 1- Boy using floater Figure 2- Life Jacket

It can keep you afloat in water, the second picture can be
seen in the ships or RORO or if you will ride a banana boat. You
are required to wear for safety measures.

In times of flood, how can you save yourself from drowning?

What improvised materials can you make to help you float in
water? I will give you one example, you can use an empty water
container with cap.

Try to observe your mother when she is cooking mongo dish.

How does your mother separate the dirt from the mongo? You can
see that the good mongo sinks while the dirt float on the water.
This also happens when you are washing rice grains, the dust also
floats.

Do you know how your favorite fried chicken and banana cue
are being cooked? It should be “deep fry” meaning you should let
the chicken or banana sink in the oil to completely cooked it. How
about when boiling an egg? You can ask your mother or other
family members if you didn’t experience boiling egg.
