This document describes an experiment using an IC 555 timer circuit to automatically control water levels. The circuit uses components like the IC 555 timer, transistor, capacitor, resistor, and relay card to turn a water pump on when the water level drops below a certain point, and off when it rises above another point. When the water level is high, the IC 555 trigger pin is connected to voltage which keeps the output low and pump off. When the level drops, the trigger pin voltage drops below threshold, causing the IC 555 output to go high and turn the pump on via a transistor. The aim is to prevent overfilling or emptying the tank. The experiment was successful in automatically controlling the pump based on water levels with a response

PRACTICAL NO:- 10
AIM: IC 555 based Automatic water level control

APPARATUS:-
 Diode
 IC 555 Timer
 Transistor
 Capacitor
 Resistor
 Relay card
 PCB
 Water Pump
 Adaptor

THEORY:-
Automatic water level controllers are used to automatically fill the
over-head tank when it starts or has become empty as well as
monitor the water level in it. Automatic water level controllers
switch the motor on whenever the water level drops below a certain
level and shuts the motor off when the water rises well above a fixed
level.

In NE555 Timer the output will increase when the power of the
second pin (trigger pin) is not more than 1/3 V DC. We can also reset
the IC using low voltage to 4th pinout (reset pins). For this particular
project you will find 3 wires attached to a water tank. We will specify
two levels – Low (Low) and High (High) Water Levels. One of the
anchors for the investigation or for Vcc.The Lower level is connected
to NE555 trigger pin 2. Therefore, the Voltage across the second pin
is Vcc while in the water. As the water level decreases, a second
probe is drawn from the water force, and the trigger pin will become
below the Vcc. Then the output of 555 goes up.

The output of 555 is connected on a BC547 transistor, activating the

transmission coil and water pump will be turned on. When the water
level rises, a high-level probe is placed in the water and the transistor
shuts down. The collecting power is VCE (sat) = 0.2. Low power in 4th
pinout resets IC. Therefore, the output of 555 turns 0V. So the Motor
is turned off. In the basic demo of this project, you can use a DC
Motor connected directly across the 555 output ground rather than
the transmission. For practical purposes, you must use a transfer.
The transfer rate is preferred depending on the load.

The automatic water level controller has been successfully designed

and developed. The submersible pump is turned off and on
according to the water levels. The automatic water level controller is
a promising controller in terms of system response in water level
control with respect to the non-linearity introduced by pumps and
sensors. The experimental model was made according to the circuit
diagram and the results were as expected. The motor pump switched
ON when the OHT was about to go dry and switched OFF when the
OHT was about to overflow.
We may can observe the points:-
1:- The time taken by the control circuit to stop and start the motor
when water reaches its predetermined level is about 0.5 sec.

2:- Mainly, we have faced the problem in getting a constant output

voltage from the IC 555, which sometimes alternates at range of 1.5-
2 V as a result the motor doesn't start properly.

CIRCUIT DIAGRAM:-
CONCLUSION:-
Water level controller is a simple yet effective way to prevent
wastage of water. Its simplicity in design and low cost
components make it an ideal piece of technology for the
common man. Thus the automatic water level controller is a
big boon as concerned with the house hold applications as
well as other water saving purposes including agricultural
sector and industries.
