ABSTRACT

Scientific literacy is the phenomenal science information that teachers

and students must apply in their daily lives. Scientific literacy plays a vital role in
making scientific choices and decisions related to health and the environment.
This study included the results of Science High School Teacher’s respondents
from Initao National Comprehensive High School with their feedbacks about
scientific literacy survey. The basic earth science and natural science history
facts evolve from scientific literacy concepts to worldwide scientific evolution that
must influence every student from their science teachers’ discussions about
science. The survey questionnaire was used to collect the data. Based on the
results Science Teachers want to improve and adopt the value of scientific
literacy concept by the step by step scientific actions and rules. We need the
Science Teachers to influence their students about the significance of scientific
literacy in their everyday life. Every individual should know the definitions and
characteristics of scientific literacy. Science learning is expected to improve
student’s science literacy knowledge and skills from their Science Teachers.
Science process skills are the things that scientists do when they study and
investigate. Focus, observing, logical, action-oriented and analytical plan organizer are
among the thinking skills must use by science teachers, students and scientists when
doing science experiment or science research. Science literacy is one of the
important necessary roles to know as a living human being, because it provides a
context for addressing some societal problems in the world where you live in.
One of the main tools of improvement in scientific discoveries is the Plan-Do-
Study-Act (PDSA). Many decades of science research provide strong evidence
for effective practices in science teaching and learning of scientific literacy
concepts. Understanding the scientific literacy more helps students and teachers
to easily understand the importance of science in their life.

INTRODUCTION

Scientific literacy is the ability that students must process to analyze and

apply of scientific concepts in solving daily life problems. All the aspects of

scientific literacy that encourage the involvement citizens. Scientific literacy

involvers the knowledgeable on basic earth science and natural history facts. As

well, as to help senior high school science teachers about their worldwide

understanding knowledge level in scientific literacy concepts. To engage and

enhance their learner’s knowledge more in science.

Scientific literacy suggests the readers to recognize science in Initao

National Comprehensive Senior High School Science Teachers, possesses know

in science but as the level of literacy is still unknown. The recognition of scientific

literacy solutions and explanations, lacking knowledge to learners in building a

content aspect of scientific literacy by students’ problems of making changes in

the theory and scientific literacy teaching.

Science-related misinformations caused of some learners by lacking their

knowledge and skills about scientific literacy approach model by Science High

School Teachers to learners. Hence, this study is conducted to know the

scientific literacy committed interest in science of Senior and Junior High School

Science Teachers in Initao National Comprehensive High School.

What are the interesting feedback of Science High School Teachers in

adopting, knowing and improving the Scientific Literacy?

Scope and Delimitation of Study

This study will be conducted to the Senior High School Science Teachers

this school year 2022-2023. It is limited to their knowledge about science literacy.

This research will give benefits to High School Science Teachers. For the

learners, this will help them identify their scientific literacy. For the Administers,

this will give them feedback in providing information among the science teachers

to give trainings, seminars and science workshops.

Theoritical Framework

Scientific literacy is to derived from science curiosity about everyday

experiences. To understand, experiment and reasons as well as the

interpretation of scientific facts and their science theories. The valuable

approaches to teaching and learning of science literacy. Is to involve some

aspects of science and some of these competencies are acquired in the domain

of science (Graber, 2011). The comptence is in the form of scientific literacy

which in this competitive era is one of the important abilities for individuals

Review of Related Literature

Scientific literacy at the beginning level of understanding. The advanced

level nominal group of understanding, which received a satisfactory outcome

(Kartowigaran, Susantini & Prastiwi 2020). Furthermore, to increase student’s

success in scientific learning application. Science learning is required to

strengthen their science literacy skills and knowledge about science. (Jufrida,

Basuki, Kurniawan, Pangestu & Fitaloka, 2019). In order to provide scientific

literacy to all individuals (Miller, 1983). While, students greatly raised through

specialized some Scientific course that included active learning in science

(Dolnicara, Podgornik & Glazar, 2019). Such as implied improvements in their

scientific literacy stock knowledge. Different science achievers displayed a

varied style when offering evidence to back up their statements. (Chen & Liu,

2018). While, students who visit websites dedicated to science have a greater

level of scientific literacy IQ (Gu, Wang & Lin, 2019). Primarily for visual aspects

of their science teaching and such as upgrading and adopting science literacy.

(Steiner & Mendelovitch, 2019). Also the impact that experimental learning had in

shifting people’s view how energy is produced, how science knowledge is gain

continuously (Fuentes & Bloom, 2019). Such as science teachers has a positive

impression of multicultural education. However, they lacked the practical skills

4
necessary to implement it (Osborn, Toole & Mckoy, 2020). The last one requires

creating science education opportunities to clearly get the attention of citizens

(Yacoubian, 2018).

As a method of instructions that science can utilize the clear instructions to

combine scientific literacy with science instructions on a debating setting (Che,

2019). Likewise, the learners acquired a working knowledge of certain facts of

scientific literacy (Rodger, 1995). While, researchers identified considerable

disparities in raw of scientific literacy abilities (Ferguson, Shaffer & Denaro,

2019). Science and technology have improvement. They also show that they

have a better comprehension of scientific problems (Queiruga-Dios, Inesta,

Ojeda, Saiz-Manzanares & Dorrio, 2020). An impact on the experimental groups

of students to know the scientific literacy theory (Hapsari, Yuliati, Parno &

Nurhidayah, 2018). Except for the private school that feel into the poor group,

Sukarta City High School and student’s in biological scientific literacy was

extremely low (Novaristiana, Rinanto & Ramli, 2019). Thus, the knowledge and

process characteristics of Takran City students of scientific literacy were

relatively weak (Aras, Vlorensiuis, Atta & Ikhsanudin, 2020). Explored patterns of

performance across multiple widely used measures of reasoning and their

relationship to scientific literacy in an effort to clarify these problems (Booth,

Shavlik & Haden, 2018). Science and technology have significantly improved.

They also show that they have a better comprehension of scientific problems and

processes (Ertepinar, Ozdem & Cavas, 2013). While the impact on the

5
experimental group’s students are in low rating and high rating in scientific

literacy survey (Yuliati & Munfaridah, 2018). Except for the private school that

feel into poor group of students in biological scientific literacy was extremely low

(Dewi, 2020).

Although, the scientific literacy were relatively weak and need to be

strengthen (Tomcik, Bellova & Ikhsanudin, 2020). Explored patterns of

performance across multiple widely used measures of reasoning and their

relationship to scientific literacy in an effort to clarify these problems (Shavlik &

Booth, 2022). Furthermore, it can be consulted by instructors to determine the

most effective techniques for increasing student’s comprehension of impulse

(Nainggolan, 2021). Knowledge of evolutionary scientific literacy easy at the

beginning level of understanding to receive a satisfactory outcome in science

(Susantini & Kartowigaran, 2021). Was successful in fostering student’s

quantitative and qualitative scientific literacy. As a result, the science classroom

can use this learning science model (Genci, 2015). Citizen science outlines

important objectives and opportunities to advance the promotion of scientific

literacy in evolution (Brandt, Margo, Gonzales & Jenkins, 2022). In scientific

literacy that tests a variety of talents and skills and the worldwide level. Might be

better improvements to described the specific suggestions and ideas in

sciencesection (Tuna & Seckin-Kapucu, 2022). Utilized as indicators of a

student’s likelihood of succeeding in courses that test scientific literacy skills and

knowledge capacity (Ferguson, Shaffer & Denaro, 2019). Scientific activities into

the educational process has the power to raise the general public’s level of

6
scientific literacy (Virtic, 2022). However, it influenced by two indirect factors,

including scientific attitude, which indirectly affects scientific literacy (Mahama &

Waewthongrak, 2022). Acquiring scientific literacy in the nature of STEM model-

based learning and socio- scientific concerns (Powell, 2021).

Category of student’s scientific literacy improved as a result of learning

using the STEM curriculum (Sertyowati, & Musadard, 2022). Therefore, the first

indicator of scientific literacy which measures the capacity to explain scientific

literacy which measures the science phenomena (Melyasari & Widodo, 2018).

Active subjects like scientific literacy that requires the process of science

knowledge (Torres & Guerrero, 2021). Connections between causal reasoning to

scientific literacy relationship (Ristanto & Rahman, 2018). Exploring scientific

literacy concept to identify which frameworks can overlap the scientific directions

for future purposes (Yacoubian, 2018).

Virtual lab activities with inquiry-based learning on student's scientific

literacy perspective in the light of scientific literacy topics (Yamtinah & Hastuti,

2022). The ability of scientific literacy is related to the mastery of concepts and

learning experienced by students; therefore, it is necessary to use learning that

can trace this ability such as Science, Technology, Engineering, and

Mathematics STEM strand (Yuliati & Munfaridah, 2018).

Methods

This study used quantitative analysis mean rating used to determine

scientific literacy among Science Teachers for the S.Y. 2022-2023. A survey

7
questionnaire was adopted by (Shavlik, 2020) to examine scientific literacy

among Science Teachers.

Formula:

Results & Discussion

Figure 2. Average mean of JHS/SHS Science Teachers in improving and

knowing more the scientific literacy concepts.

8
The first highest mean rating are both statements number 5 & 6

“Scientific literacy helps the science teachers to understand the various elements

of science” and “The application of scientific concepts is the central goal of

science literacy” that garnered a mean rating of 3.90 that has a descriptive rating

of strongly agree. Science teachers think that the scientific literacy helps the

scientific knowledge and skills to all science teachers to promote the various

elements of scientific literacy. Many studies on biology learning to all secondary

schools have been conducted in order to improve the learning quality of science

teachers to learners. The findings demonstrated that learners that also acquired

a working knowledge of certain facts and concepts of scientific literacy. It also

tests the teacher’s and learner’s scientific knowledge. Prastika, Wati & Suyidno,

et al. (2019). Scientific literacy explored teacher’s scientific knowledge of

performance across and multiple widely used measures of their relationship to

scientific literacy. Shavlik, et al. (2022), In an effort to clarify those scientific

literacy problems.

Scientific literacy is having an understanding of what science is and how

to use scientific literacy information in daily decision making. Booth, et al. (2022).

The goal of scientific concepts is to promote the science knowledge from

teachers to learners and everyone. Scientific concepts also the goal to

encourage possibilities for learning about science evolution. Melsyasari, et al.

(2018). A variety of one action that can be taken is to create instructional

materials with the aim of boosting scientific knowledge to all individuals. A tested

tool for enhancing and evaluating scientific literacy in college science courses.

9
They could be utilized as indicators of a student goals of succeeding in science

courses that test their scientific knowledge. Shaffer & Denaro, et al. (2019). The

various definitions of scientific literacy and seek its connections to science

education it further explores the progress in developing scientific research skills

among students (Virtic, 2022).

The 2nd highest mean rating statement is number 8 “It is really important

to produce scientific literacy to citizens especially to learners” garnered a mean

rating of 3.7 that has a descriptive rating of strongly agree. It’s important to aware

all individuals about the scientific literacy’s values because we are surrounded by

technology and the products of science in our every day’s life. Science also

involved in scientific concepts that students encountered in their everyday lives

based on the scientific methods, scientific thoughts, scientific ideas and scientific

curiosity. Scientific literacy is important because it helps in making informed

decisions to assists in a better understanding of the risk-reward ratio, as well as

helping with promoting and achieving scientific literacy worldwide.

The government guidelines tests often focus on the middle and high

school-level STEM. Yet, many throughout their schooling engagements in

science. Beer, et al. (2008), Few things in the history of science raise more the

issue of the phenomena named by concepts precede the developments of

science concepts to learners. Scientific histories provide an opportunity for

growth in the future. New scientific knowledge may lead to new applications.

Crease, et al. (2004), The Scientific Revolution led to the creation of the new

knowledge systems. Scientific literacy concepts helps the culture, citizenships,

10
society, reading and writing skills. Science literacy is a constantly self-revising

process by which small hypotheses are tested, retested, disproved, modified and

retested, slowly and step by step adding to an increasing understanding of a

greater scientific masterpiece. The discovery of the scientific structure was a

fundamental science.

The 3rd highest mean rating statements are both number 1,2 and 9 “The

learning and teaching methods encouraged the participation of science teachers

to scientific literacy”, "Scientific literacy give the strongest level of science

knowledge to all senior high school science teachers" and “Scientific literacy

helps the science teachers to understand the various elements of science”

garnered a mean rating of 3.5 that has a descriptive rating of strongly agree.

High School Science Teachers interested about scientific literacy because they

are teaching science subject. Understanding and applying scientific knowledge

from Senior high school science teachers to students will help them examine

their knowledge about scientific literacy.

The beginning level of scientific literacy nominal understanding which

received a satisfactory outcome to increase teachers and student’s success in

scientific literacy. Chen, et al. (2019), Primarily for visual aspects of their science

teaching such as upgrading and adopting science literacy to all science teachers

and students. Sharik & Booth, et al. (2022), the impact that experiential learning

has in shifting people’s views on how scientific knowledge is gain continuously.

Scientific literacy bringing the strongest level of knowledge by bringing all the

greater understanding of science senior high school teachers. Cheng et al.

11
(2017), The head of the DOA provides leadership for the science literacy priority

area. The use of the test of scientific knowledge and skills is an important

contributor to every individual’s scientific literacy strongest level of science

knowledge.

Science is the most fascinating field of work to develop by humankind and

brings the most amazing scientific facts to science teachers and learners.

Science also enables us to cope better with illness in the modern era. It also

simplified better the lives of every individuals with scientific facts. In science

history almost everyday scientists have a new invention that makes science more

interesting, safer and efficient. Denaro, et al. (2019). Alternative science makes

claim about the global warming involves and experience the world rather than

reasoning the theory of science logic (Chogluek, 2016). Having a strong basis of

scientific facts knowledge will help you understand easier the world you live in.

Some scientific facts are from scientist are the very curious people that exist in

this world. Before they make some theories and inventions they observe first and

research about their scientific thoughts, scientific ideas and scientific inventions.

Friedl, et al. (2021), The various of the scientific study of several subjects under

the broad discipline of science is to influence teachers and learners about

scientific literacy background concepts.

The fourth highest mean rating statements are both number 3 and 10

“The profile of the science teachers and their adaptation level to scientific

literacy” and "In National Science Education Standards, the content standards to

define scientific literacy" garnered a mean rating of 3.5 that has a descriptive

12
rating of strongly agree. The scientific literacy importance between the level of

adaptation especially to all science teachers. To implies that a person or should I

say every individual can identify some local and national scientific issues.

One action to create instructional materials with the aim of boosting

scientific literacy adaptation. Rodger, et al. (1995), The potential for each citizen

to promote the adaptation of science literacy in evolution. In National

Assessment Standards in science is defined the scientific literacy to acquire new

knowledge, to talk about science- related issues, to explain scientific phenomena

in scientific literacy. The willingness to engage in science as a reflective citizen.

Mahama, Latch & Waewthongrok, et al. (2022), Scientific literacy stand in

process of information to achieve every individual’s scientific knowledge in this

world. (Alberts, 2010). Scientific literacy has expanded the understanding of

science through science facts that you can search everywhere. Science decides

to publish helps to define scientific excellence for science teachers, science

learners and scientist.

The 5th lowest mean rating statements are both number 4 and 7

“Scientist should take responsibility for bad effects to their theories and

inventions to scientific literacy” and “Scientist should take responsibility for bad

effects to their theories and inventions to scientific literacy” garnered a mean

rating of 3.1 that has a descriptive rating of strongly agree. Scientist should follow

valuable standards when it comes to their research. The outcomes of their theory

or inventions it should protect also the human rights and safety protocol with their

13
theories and inventions. Scientists also provide their scientific guidelines in their

contributions in scientific literacy evolution, Virtic, et al. (2020). The appropriate

scientific activities into the educational literacy and seeks it’s connections to

science.

Science is more valuable and unique nowadays through science teachers

will adopt the scientific history of science towards to learners. We should study

the history of science literacy because it’s improved every individual’s science

skills engagement to scientific literacy adaptation. Mathews, et al. (1994), The

history of science that teachers and learner’s adaptation in studies that develops

the systematics knowledge in scientific literacy. According to Michael, et al.

(2019), the point of views about the nature of science views are the best

informed by historical knowledge in scientific literacy. Mores, et al. (2015), The

aim of this study is to determine the history of science related to adaptation of

science teachers and their opinions about science educational values in history

(Lacin-Sim, 2019).

CONCLUSION

Scientific literacy among science teachers at Initao National
