5.Course Objective(s):

Overall Objective:
The main objective of the course is to impart advanced skills of Technical Communication in
English through Language Lab. Practice sessions to 1st semester UG students of B.Tech. and
enable them to communicate confidently and competently in English Language in sphere. To
ensure understanding of the basics of communication through English, application of the various
models of verbal and non-verbal communication in the social and professional sphere, the rules
of phonology and its application, understanding the basics of grammar to improve
communication and speak a neutral and correct form of English.

Module-wise Objectives:
Module Objective
English Language Grammar The two most important components of a
language are vocabulary and grammar. A
repertoire of words and the ability to form
meaningful sentences with those words are
the basic tools of communication. Hence,
developing a wide vocabulary is as essential
for proficiency in any language as is the
knowledge of the rules of grammar.
Reading Comprehension Comrehension passages are meant to test a
student’s understanding of a given text. It is
an effective tool to guage a student’s
command of a language and concentration
while reading.
Technical Communication Helping students to achieve clarity and
fluency; manipulating paralinguistic features
of speaking (voice modulation, pitch, tone
stress, effective pauses); conducting task
oriented interpersonal, informal and
semiformal speaking/Classroom presentation.
Mastering Technical Communication Teaching all varieties of written technical
communication to maintain an effective
communication system in an organization.the
student should acquire clarity, brevity and
accuracy that form basic elements of any
good written technical communication.

Overall Outcome:

1. Acquire knowledge about the various principles of communication, understand its


various stages and the role of audience and purpose, deal with the barriers that affect
communication in a professional set up and understand the different channels that are
functional at the work place.

diseases among working class. In order to work on the possible solutions, the Health
Minister has asked the Chief Medical Officer, IMSI, Delhi, to find out the possible

9. Application in real life:

This is the age of information and communication technologies. Engineers and technical
professionals need to convey technical information in English for various purposes. Besides
learning general English as an international language, engineering students need to be equipped
with adequate writing ability so that they can communicate technical information clearly on at
least a basic level. A good English writing proficiency can be a contributing factor to
professional recognition and career prospects. This course teaches those writing strategies that
scientists, engineers and others will need in order to write successfully on the job. It initiates the
students into Technical Writing. The purposes of technical writing are to inform and persuade.
This program aims to train students in writing clear, concise and effective English. This syllabus
is therefore, a pragmatic English writing program for engineering students with intermediate
proficiency. The program covers a syllabus outline and instructional approaches on basic writing
skills with particular reference to technical writing.

Apart from the curriculum, the students are engaged in other activities that would assist
them to master the language. Some of the activities are as follows:

i) Exercises on elementary grammar like Parts of Speech etc. so as to prepare them


for handling the university curriculum.

ii) Written exercises on conversation practice help the students to come up with
spontaneous dialogues and establish a conversation.

iii) Story-telling sessions allow the students to paint their imagination in words and
improve their reading and speaking skills as well.

iv) Free speaking exercise like JAM enables the students to apply their grammatical
knowledge and overcome their fear of speaking in public.
