AnSci 121 Lab 1

This document is a laboratory exercise from an Introduction to Animal Science course. The objectives are to identify external parts of ruminant and non-ruminant animals, relate those parts to production and welfare roles, and estimate body weights of large animals using measurements. Students will measure and take photos of pigs and cows to calculate estimated weights. They will also label diagrams of poultry and livestock external anatomy. Questions address beef cattle breeds and differences between dewclaws. Performance will be assessed based on completion of these tasks.

External Anatomy and Body Measurements

Laboratory Exercise No. 1

I. Introduction

The human being starts studying the science of animals for them to be able to
understand, and learn how will they be breed, produce for business and to know what is their
behavior.

Weight can be used to determine the correct amount of feed an animal can get, to avoid
underfeeding or overfeeding. It also allows you to determine the possible values of the live
animal in relation to the market price.

II. Objective

At the end of the activity, the students are expected to:

1. Identify the different parts of ruminant and non-ruminant animals;
2. Relate the parts to certain roles in production and animal welfare; and;
3. Estimate body weights of large animals.

III. Specimen, Materials and Equipment

1. Laboratory activity worksheet
2. Pig and Cow
3. Tape Measure
4. PPE (boots, gloves and face mask)

IV. Methodology
1. Look for a chicken, duck, pig and cow in your community, take pictures of each kind,
label the external parts, and attach in the illustration 1 to 4.
2. Identify the parts that are involved in doing the task for production and reproduction by
answering the question 1 to 2.
3. Look for three (1) pigs (preferably gilt or sow) in your community that you can work
with.
a. Measure the body length of the pig, starting at the base of the head to the base of
the tail using tape measure and use inches as the measuring unit. See figure 1 and
figure 2 for the example.

b. Measure the chest girth of the pig, using tape measure and use inches as the
measuring unit. See figure 3 and figure 4 for the example.

c. Calculate the estimated body weights of each of the three (3) pigs using the
formula below and fill-in table no.1

4. Look for three (1) cows in your community that you can work with.

Question No. 1. Angus produces one of the prime beefs in the market. Are these cattle a tropical or
temperate breed? Describe how each one differs from the other?

Question No. 2. Distinguish the dewclaw of a cock and the dewclaw of a pig. Relate how these parts
work.
