AnSci 121 Lab 1
I. Introduction
The human being starts studying the science of animals for them to be able to
understand, and learn how will they be breed, produce for business and to know what is their
behavior.
Weight can be used to determine the correct amount of feed an animal can get, to avoid
underfeeding or overfeeding. It also allows you to determine the possible values of the live
animal in relation to the market price.
II. Objective
IV. Methodology
1. Look for a chicken, duck, pig and cow in your community, take pictures of each kind,
label the external parts, and attach in the illustration 1 to 4.
2. Identify the parts that are involved in doing the task for production and reproduction by
answering the question 1 to 2.
3. Look for three (1) pigs (preferably gilt or sow) in your community that you can work
with.
a. Measure the body length of the pig, starting at the base of the head to the base of
the tail using tape measure and use inches as the measuring unit. See figure 1 and
figure 2 for the example.
b. Measure the chest girth of the pig, using tape measure and use inches as the
measuring unit. See figure 3 and figure 4 for the example.
Figure 3. Chest girth of pig using actual specimen Figure 4. Chest girth of pig illustration
c. Calculate the estimated body weights of each of the three (3) pigs using the
formula below and fill-in table no.1
4. Look for three (1) cows in your community that you can work with.
a. Measure the body length of the cow, starting at the shoulder to the base of the tail
(distance A and B in figure 6) using tape measure and use inches as the measuring

Note. Attach photo-documentation each of the animal measurements with corresponding figure no.
and figure description.
Instruction: Choose any species of livestock animal. Attach the actual picture of the livestock animal
then label the external part properly.
Question No. 2. Distinguish the dewclaw of a cock and the dewclaw of a pig. Relate how these parts
work.
