Lochearn Elementary

We Excel

September 2011

When parents and schools work together, they make an unbeatable team.

Dear Parents, On behalf of the entire staff, I extend a warm welcome back to our returning families. For those of you who are new to Lochearn Elementary, I wish you a special welcome to your new school. I hope that you will soon feel that you are an important part of the Lochearn School Community. We are all very excited about beginning another school year at Lochearn. We plan to continue with many of the wonderful programs of the past and eagerly anticipate bringing new activities to our school program. We look forward to getting to know your children, to connecting with each of you, and hope you take an active role in the school. There is no debate about the fact that family involvement in schools boosts student achievement. Families and parents can support their childrens schooling by volunteering, attending school functions, and being aware of classroom activities. They can become more involved by helping their children improve their schoolwork through encouragement, modeling desired behavior (such as reading for pleasure), monitoring and helping with homework, and tutoring at home. When the family is involved in their childrens school, children benefit, schools benefit, and families benefit. We wish both you and your children a very productive and enriching year at Lochearn!

Please note that we have decided to have whole school assemblies again and for September we will all meet in the gym at noon on Tuesday, September 27. Come and celebrate student achievement with us! 2011-2012 Whole School Assemblies at Noon:

Awards
At Lochearn School we believe that all students need to be recognized for their learning. We also believe that learning is a journey not a race or a competition. We have chosen to recognize our students in the following ways: Monthly Awards these awards will be given out at the monthly assembly to recognize students who have exhibited one of the seven habits of being green. G Team - students throughout the school will be chosen to be on the G Team at each reporting term. Classroom teachers will choose 3 or 4 students who have demonstrated exemplary achievement in some area of their learning. End of the Year Achievement Recognition all students will receive an award that recognizes something that they have shown achievement in during the school year. Leader In Me Awards this certificate will be given to all students who have participated in a school community volunteer activity ie recycle club, peer support, leadership team, grade 4 Clearwater Center volunteers, lead team, milk, choir and crosswalk

Teaching Spelling So It Sticks!

The Word Study approach to spelling allows for students to learn words at their individual level of instruction and teaches students how words work. What is Word Study? Word study is just what it sounds like a study of words. Students are assessed throughout the year and placed into small groups based on their current spelling ability. Students move through weekly word study patterns and activities during the week with a test on Fridays. Students lists will be on a word study PATTERN (example all long a words, words with CH, CVCe words, or vowels in multisyllable words). The quiz will be on the word PATTERN they have been studying, NOT necessarily on that set list of words.

Why Word Study instead of traditional spelling? Research studies clearly indicate that memorization of lists of "spelling words" does not promote the development of spelling skills. In the past when weve used this traditional approach of "everyone gets the same weekly list and test on Friday", many students who got a 100% on their spelling test could not spell most of the words in their writing! Memorizing a list of words and getting 100% on weekly tests does not necessarily mean your child is a good speller. It may just mean they are good at memorizing words for a test. Word Study Homework: Spelling homework will consist of student sorts and optional activities, however spelling homework is not formally assigned. Each student should practice and study their pattern word sort each week. Students will practice their sorts in school each day but need the reinforcement of practicing their sorts at home to learn and be able to use the patterns. Your childs teacher will send home more information on activities to do for word study. Reading
The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go. Dr. Seuss
Texting This is an interesting site that discusses the effect of texting on literacy. http://www.literacyconnections.com/blog/texting-and-literacy

Sharon Taberski provides two strategies for you to use when reading with your child at home. These strategies will help your child understand what they have read or listened to. Somebody-Wanted-But-So, and the Five-Finger Retelling. Somebody: Who is the story about? Wanted: What did this character want? But: But what happened? So: How did it end? What happened next? Five-Finger Retell, where each finger represents one aspect of the story. Thumb: The characters are 1st finger: The setting is Tall finger: The problem is Ring finger: The events are (What happened first? Next? Then?) Little finger: At the end
