The introduction to the TSG documentation is designed to provide you with an overview
into this new troubleshooting concept for the MAGNETOM C!
Application 0
The following instructions apply to the MAGNETOM C! 0.35T. The enclosed instructions
will support service technicians during on-site troubleshooting and error definition. While
the instructions are not a substitute for in-depth knowledge of the system, its electronics
or underlying physics, they will facilitate, on the one hand, troubleshooting procedures for
the less experienced technician, and, on the other, support the more experienced techni-
cian in performing essential measurements and tests. The instructions will also explain
standard procedures such as measurements at power supplies, etc.
These instructions should not and do not take the place of an error catalogue. Usually,
most hardware errors are easily and quickly located. Only those that occur sporadically
require more time.
It is not within the scope of the enclosed instructions to list all possible tests. Their pur-
pose is to support the search for frequently occurring errors, to allow the technician to limit
the error search to certain function- groups, and to propose measurements for error local-
ization. The instructions should be used as a supplement in connection with other docu-
mentation such as:
• Planning Guide
• Technical Documents Volume 1 of 2 (Installation)
• Technical Documents Volume 2 of 2 (Installation)
• Functional Descriptions
• Troubleshooting Guide (TSG)
• Replacement of Parts (REP)
• Diagrams
Additional documentation:
• Update Instructions
• Speed infos
Should you have any suggestions or requests, please contact Siemens Medical Solu-
tions, CS SD 23 Henkestrasse 127, D-91052 Erlangen.
Document Structure 0
The enclosed instructions have been subdivided according to the new guidelines for doc-
umentation: The following troubleshooting guide is structured as listed below.
• Table of Contents
• Introduction/Safety
• System
• Software
• Host
• SMI
• MMC
• RF system
• Patient handling
• Gradient system
• Cooling
• Line power
• Changes
• Index
The information for the different system components has been subdivided in:
• Test Strategy
• Test Procedures
Strategy
The flowchart is designed as a general guideline for selecting the appropriate trouble-
shooting procedures.
The objective of the accompanying descriptions is not to give detailed step-by-step
instructions on the finer art of troubleshooting, but to offer a means of guiding you, given a
particular problem, to the right test procedure in all brevity and simplicity. If more detailed
instructions are necessary, the CSE will be referred to the appropriate procedures in the
“Test Procedures“ section.
Procedures
Here the CSE will find detailed test instructions. You will also find descriptions for “stan-
dard procedures“, for example starting the SeSo, connecting the laptop to the Host, read-
ing log files, etc. This section also contains descriptions of interpreting the test results.
Furthermore you will find general information pertaining to parts location, fuse ratings,
power supply information, measuring points, descriptions of LEDs and potentiometers in
this section.
Index
An index at the end of the book provides you, in addition to the table of contents, with
cross references to information on topics you may wish to look into for further information.
It is a helpful source of information when looking for related topics of when wanting to con-
centrate on items of interest. For example, if you would like to know more about the
“adjust frequency“ you could either look under “A“ for “adjust“ or “F“ for “frequency“. Many
topics listings are redundant to help make your search more successful.
Safety 0
All safety guidelines necessary for troubleshooting are listed in this chapter.
General
Note the special safety guidelines indicated in all instructions. Read these instructions
completely prior to beginning any work.
Safety Notes 0
Ferromagnetic materials
Introduction of ferromagnetic materials or tools in proximity of the magnet results in such
objects becoming projectiles that could present a lethal risk to personnel working in the
vicinity of the magnet.
Phantom fluids
For all safety information about handling phantoms and phantom fluid refer to “Phantom
fluids“ in binder: Technical Documents Volume 1 of 2; register: MR-specific safety
information; chapter: Safety guidelines.
Laser beams
For all safety information about handling laser beams refer to “Laser Beams“ in
binder:Technical Documents Volume 1 of 2; register: MR-specific safety information;
chapter: Safety guidelines.
CAUTION Laser products are not allowed to be operated without the appro-
priate housing, otherwise observed physical injury can occur.
¹ Do not look into the laser beam directly or at its reflection
on smooth, mirror-like surfaces.
NOTE Perform the “Image Orientation Check“ after all repair procedures
when you have to disconnect or open the gradient coil power cir-
cuit, e.g. replacement of:
- Current sensors
- Gradient filters
- Gradient coil
- Gradient cables
In this part you will find test strategies, procedures, and appendix instructions encompass-
ing the complete system.
Strategy 0
In this part you will find test strategies encompassing the complete system.

Service Software 0
In this chapter you will find general information for accessing the Service Software and
Licensing.
Prerequisites
• NUMARIS has to be up and running
• Variable password (Service licence) available
NOTE If you need a password for your site, request it from your district
office.
Service licenses can be generated with different service levels (level 1-7), the local district
can sell the service licence level 1-6, level 7 is only for use by trained SIEMENS CSE’s.
The variable password protects against unauthorized access. The variable password is
generated from a number of parameters, such as Hardware DONGLE, expiration date,
serial number and system type.
Required tools 0
• Laptop with Windows XP, PCMCI network card installed, supporting TCP/IP (including
drop cable with a RJ45 plug).
• TCP/IP is installed as network protocol.
• Internet browser: “Netscape Communicator 4.07“
• Virtual network viewer: “remote connection“. To access Windows XP of the Imager from
the service PC.
For connecting a laptop to the syngo MR system, use the local network switch off the
measurement system.
Prerequisites
Laptop configured for syngo MR network, refer to (Network settings for service
Laptop / p. 12)
Remember to enable remote access, refer to (Enable Remote Service / p. 10)
Required tools
If a laptop is used for accessing the service software remotely, the following tools are
needed:
• Laptop with modem or Intranet access via Rdiag server
• Internet browser: “Netscape Communicator 4.07“
Prerequisites
• Remote access must be enabled at the target site, refer to (Enable Remote
Service / p. 10)
In the window Exceptions, you are able to define known servers that you would like to
access in parallel.
Refer to the following syntax example:
tdi-s3.med.siemens.de, 146.254.119.126
NOTE For direct modem connection from the laptop to the syngo MR site,
refer to CB-DOC CD-ROM, “Help, Service-PC"
Each system is identified through a unique ID code, the “hardware dongle“ plugged in at
the USBl port of the host (MRC/MRSC).
The service license and customer licenses are generated in relation to the HW dongle.
• Applications licenses: Dongle in combination with a license key generated with the
Census plus.
• Service license(s): Dongle in combination with a license key generated with the Cen-
sus plus.
If the DONGLE becomes defective, the DONGLE has to be replaced.
Read dongle ID
To check the functionality of the dongle, use the following procedure to read the HW don-
gle ID:
• Login as administrator
• Click Start, select Programs, click Command Prompt
Incorrect timing can lead to problems for the service engineer. The license protection
allows time adjustments within a total of 24h.
NOTE If the time frame of 24h is exceeded, the following problems will
occur: all customer options (licenses) will be locked, access to the
service platform will be locked.
