Objectives
The objective of this experiment is to measure various type of samples.

Abstract
Measurements is one of the important things in all of the processes in manufacturing,
designing and any process need a specified measure. Cause without measure we can
not get the output of any manufacturing or designing which we want. After
manufacturing process we must to check the measurements of the sample we produce
to know does it have same measure that we need or no, so here we need specified
measure tools and it sensitive so we need to me accurate to get the measures, and in
this experiment we will take some of measures tools and use it to specified purpose.

1. Introduction
As we mentioned earlier, an accurate measurement is one that is close to the ‘true
answer’. However, in practice we do not know what the ‘true answer’ is. In the real
world, what interests us is the answer to the question: “How wrong are we likely to have
been?” The answer to this question is called the 'uncertainty of measurement', which
generally can be quite hard to evaluate. In short, we are looking to identify the possible
sources of uncertainty, evaluate the uncertainty from each source and, finally, combine
the individual uncertainties to get an overall figure. install. In the manufacturing
industry it is very important to maintain the quality of the products and make sure the
produced products have the same standards and degrade overtime. There are so many
different types of measurement tools we can use with each having a different purpose
and place to use.

2. Experiment procedure
In these experiments we mostly used Vernier Calipers, but we also used radius gauge
to measure the radius, a depth gauge to measure the depth and a 3-point internal
micrometer to measure the hole diameter. (Samples used in experiments can be seen
in figures 1 and 2.)

4. Discussion / Analysis
Q01: You have a test work piece with a length of 37 mm and a length tolerance of

0.025mm. What measuring instrument will you use?

Vernier Caliper will be used to measure the workpiece.

Q02: Explain the difference between testing, measuring, and gauging in detail?

8
Testing is using test equipment to learn if a workpiece needs the specified
requirements. Measuring is acquiring the exact dimensions of the workpiece, how is
the scale of a fixed range which is very precise also we can only measure a few numbers
of workpieces, must be performed by very skilled workers. Gauging Is checking if the
workpieces are within range to the specified limit, scales are not used in gauging, we
can measure a lot of work pieces in a short time, and it is very fast to perform.
Q03: What is the difference between measuring instruments and gauges?

Measuring instruments can be modified depending on the dimensions of the

workpiece we want to measure. However, Gauges are fixed and can only be used to
check whether a workpiece fits a certain standard or not.
Q04: What is the difference between measuring range and measuring accuracy for a

measuring instrument?

Measuring range is the maximum and minimum values that can be seen on the
measuring device. Measuring accuracy is how close a measuring device can come to
the real dimensions of the workpiece.
Q05: What is a nonius? Also explain the purpose of internal micrometer and depth

micrometer.

A nonius Is a small scale that is used on measuring tools to get a very precise
measurement of a workpiece. Internal micrometers are used to acquire the inner
diameters. Depth micrometers are used to get the depth measurement of the hole or
a slot.
Q06: Give two advantages and two disadvantages of the micrometer screw gauge over

the Vernier caliper?

Micrometer screw gauges are very durable and can be used to measure very small
diameters, but they are limited and can’t be used to measure larger objects like the
vernier calipers do, also vernier calipers can be used in more applications.
Q07: Why slip gauge is being used in inspection. Also discuss the material of slip

gauges.

9
We use slip gauges only as a standard and to check if a workpiece meets the
requirements. Slip gauges can be made from tool steel, stainless steel, tungsten carbide
and many more.
Q08: What are different types of radius gauges?

1. Gauges with single function blades at either end.

2. Gauges with multifunction blades at either end.
3. Gauges with five different measuring surfaces.
4. acrylic gauge.
5. Ring bound multifunction blade.
6. Digital gauge.

5. Conclusion

During these experiments we understood how to use some measuring tools and how
it is important to get the right measurements otherwise it would be very catastrophic
in the industry if the measurements were taken wrongfully also it can be a waste of
resources and time in production. We used different measuring tools to get the
measurement of outer diameters and inner diameters also we got the lengths and the
depths of the workpieces.
