Theoretical Valve Timing Diagram

In this type of diagram suction &

exhaust valve opens and close at TDC
and BDC. Fuel Injection starts at T.D.C at
end of compression stroke.

T.D.C- TOP DEAD CENTER

B.D.C.- BOTTOM DEAD CENTER
I.V.0 – INLET VALVE OPENS
I.V.C- INLET VALVE CLOSES
EVO – EXHAUST VALVE OPENS
EVC-EXHAUST VALVE CLOSES

For Example In Actual operating IC Engine the Inlet Valve opens
Valve Timing diagram ,the Exhaust valve 25 degrees before T.D.C
opens 50 degrees before B.D.C and closes and Closes 25 degrees
15 degrees after T.D.C . The Fuel injection after B.D.C ,
starts 5 degrees before T.D.C. @Autogurukul
SUCTION STROKE
During Suction stroke, Inlet valve is open and
Exhaust valve is close
As the piston moves from the TDC (Top ) To BDC
(Bottom) , the volume in the cylinder increase ,
while simultaneously pressure decreases. This
creates pressure difference between the outside
and inside of the cylinder. Due to this pressure
difference in C.I. Engine air will enter into the
cylinder. The crankshaft has now made half rotation
i.e. 180 degree of crank angle. At the end of this
stroke, the cylinder will filled completely with air
charge and inlet valve is now closed.

@Autogurukul
COMPRESSION STROKE
During this stroke both ,Inlet valve and exhaust
valve are closed, the piston moves from BDC
(Bottom) to TDC (Top).
As this stroke being performed ,the charge
contained in the cylinder will be compressed ,
temperature of charge increases. so the pressure
also increases
Near the end of this compression stroke , In
C.I.Engine the atomized high pressure diesel is
sprayed through nozzle. The combustion of diesel
releases the hot gases which will increases the
pressure inside the cylinder .

@Autogurukul
POWER STROKE
During this stroke both Inlet valve and Exhaust
valve are closed, the piston moves from TDC (
Top) to BDC (Bottom) . The high pressure and
high temperature burnt gases force the piston
downwards , generating power stroke. This
stroke is also known as expansion or working
stroke. The engine produces mechanical work or
power during this stroke. As the piston moves
from TDC (Top) to BDC (Bottom) , the pressure of
hot gases gradually decreases and volume
increases. Near the end of this Power stroke, the
exhaust valve opens and the burnt gases start to
move out from cylinder
@Autogurukul
EXHAUST STROKE
During Exhaust stroke, the exhaust valve is opened
and the inlet valve is closed . The piston moves from
BDC (Bottom) to TDC (Top) , this motion of piston
pushes the exhaust gases (combustion product) out
of the cylinder .

This completes the one cycle of 4 stroke IC engine

Intake – Compression –Power –Exhaust ,
And then once again the inlet valve opens and the
new cycle starts beginning with Intake stroke and
so on ---
