Transitions

A useful way to help the logical movement within a paragraph or between

paragraphs is to use transitions to mark turns in the road and remind you where
you are going. As a result, they are often used in the topic sentence, linking it to
the previous paragraph.
Using transitions and pointers can help you keep a paragraph—and the
whole essay—organized and easy to follow. Here are common transitions and
pointers:

Examples of transitions:

Cause & effect: accordingly, as a result, because, consequently, therefore, since,

thus, for this reason

Explanation: for example, for instance, in fact, specifically, that is, in other words

Emphasis: additionally, also, at the same time, furthermore, in addition, lastly,

moreover

Addition: also, equally important, finally, further, furthermore, as well, yet

Comparison: Again, also, similarly, likewise

Contrast: although, but, despite this, even though, however, in contrast, instead,
nevertheless

Time sequence: first, second, at last, at length, during, eventually, immediately,

later, meanwhile, when, until, soon, before, after, afterward
