Through the Animal Prism:

Seeing Ancient Greece, Rome, and the Ancient Mediterranean
Through their Animals, Theriomorphic Hybrids and Monsters

The field of ancient animal studies is currently flourishing

across the world. Many excellent books, conference proceedings,
and essay collections attest to this growth. Scholars from a great
number of disciplines are learning the benefits of seeing antiquity
through the medium of the ancients’ animals: philology,
archaeology, anthropology, folk lore studies, history of art,
veterinary science, zooarchaeology, zoology, and more. As is
always possible in scholarly fields, though, it is quite easy for an
individual to focus on her/his specialty at the expense of other
disciplines and most of us would benefit from a wider sense of the
field in order to bring several disciplines and their points of view
to bear on individual problems. The proposed conference seeks to
further this interaction by gathering together, via the Internet,
scholars from around the world who are interested in the general
subject matter of ancient Mediterranean animals.

Through the Animal Prism will be an international wide

ranging conference whose aim is to present in a single place
scholarship that deals with ancient animals across the span of the
Mediterranean. As such, it calls for paper abstracts from scholars
from across the world who study any aspect of ancient animals of
the Mediterranean. Since these animals were involved with
myriad aspects of ancient life, papers may address the subject from
a variety of points of view, such as (but not confined to) those of
philology, archaeology and zooarchaeology, anthropology, history
of art, zoology, and more.

Its aims are thus:

 To illustrate the breadth and depth of the field

 To expose scholars of a given discipline to other, fruitful,
disciplines
 To foster cooperation among scholars in the field
 To encourage across-discipline publication
