MATH135: Algebra Fall 2022

Assignment 1 Due Friday, September 16, 2022 at 5:00PM EDT

Instructions
• There are six submission slots on Crowdmark: Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5 and Q6. Please upload
your solutions into the appropriate slots.

• This assignment covers sections 1.1 - 1.5 (inclusive).

Problems
Q1. For each sentence, indicate whether or not it is a statement.

(a) The smallest prime number is 2.

(b) cos2 θ + sin2 θ = 1
(c) Every integer x is of the form 2k or 2k + 1.
(d) The number 0 is neither even nor odd.
(e) Is 3 > 2 true?

Q2. Express the following statements symbolically. Do not use any words.

(a) A perfect square is always non-negative.

(b) The range of the function y = x3 is all real numbers.

Q3. State the negation of the following statements without using words or the ¬ symbol.

(a) ∀x ∈ Z, ∃y ∈ R, x + 2y < 3 2
(b) ∃a ∈ N, ∀b ∈ Q, ∃c ∈ Z, ¬(a = b − c)

Q4. Let P (x, n) be the open sentence ∃y ∈ Z, 2x + 4y = n. For all parts, no justification is
required.

(a) Determine the truth values of P (2, 4) and P (2, 5).

(b) Is the sentence, ∃x ∈ Z, P (x, n) a mathematical statement or an open sentence? If it
is a mathematical statement, determine its truth value. If it is an open sentence, state
what variable(s) it depends on.
(c) Is the sentence, ∀n ∈ Z, ∃x ∈ Z, P (x, n) a mathematical statement or an open sentence?
If it is a mathematical statement, determine its truth value. If it is an open sentence,
state what variable(s) it depends on.

(d) ∀x ∈ N, 4x + (ln x)2 ≥ 2x ln(x2 )
(e) ∀y ∈ Q, ∃x ∈ Q, x + 2xy = 4

Q6. Choose the appropriate domain, S, and the appropriate open sentence, P (x, y), to make each
statement true. In your solution, you must use each domain and each open sentence exactly
once. You do not need to provide proofs that these statements are true.
