Summary
This Guideline gives the specifications that are necessary to measure the connecting rods that are used in the
3600 Family of Engines.

If a connecting rod meets these specifications and the guidelines for inspection that are shown in Reuse and
Salvage Guidelines, SEBF8063, "Visual Inspection of Connecting Rods", then the connecting rod can be
expected to give normal performance until the next overhaul when the connecting rod is used again in the same
application.

Inspect the connecting rod bolts at each service of the connecting rod bearings. There should be no fretting on the
shank of the connecting rod bolt. This includes the knurled area of the connecting rod bolts. Ensure that the
connecting rod bolts meet the guidelines for reusable parts. Do not reuse the nuts.

Do not reuse the bolts if Dimension (F) exceeds 329 mm (12.953 inch).

Tightening Procedure for Connecting Rod Bolts

+ote: Connecting rod bolt (1) and connecting rod bolt (2) are on the same side of the connecting rod as the raised
bosses and the tab slots for the connecting rod bearing.

Illustration 4 g00756010
This illustration identifies the connecting rod bolts and nuts.

1. Use 334-0519 Molylube Anti-Seize Lubricant to lubricate the threads of the bolts, of the nuts, and the
seating face of the nut after the bolt for the connecting rod is installed in the connecting rod.

+ote: This torque procedure was developed with 334-0519 Molylube Anti-Seize Lubricant . The use of
any other lubricant may result in an incorrect torque value and in subsequent failure of the connecting rod
bolt.

2. Turn all four nuts by hand until the nuts contact the face of the cap. No resistance should be felt that would
indicate thread damage or debris in the joint. Threading the nuts by hand provides an opportunity to
identify problems with the threads. If the nuts and/or bolts cannot be threaded by hand, the nuts and/or
bolts must be replaced. Do not use a impact wrench to install the nuts up to the face of the cap.

3. Tighten nuts (1), (4), (2), and (3) .

Torque ... 105 ± 15 N·m (75 ± 10 lb ft)

4. Tighten nuts (1), (4), (2), and (3) .

Torque ... 340 ± 15 N·m (250 ± 11 lb ft)

5. Without loosening the nuts, tighten the nuts for the second time in the following order: nut (2), nut (3), nut
(1) and nut (4) .

Torque ... 340 ± 15 N·m (250 ± 11 lb ft)

6. Loosen nut (1). Then, tighten the nut to 80 ± 10 N·m (60 ± 7 lb ft). Then, turn the nut for an additional 360
degrees. Repeat this step for nut 4, then for nut 2, and then for nut 3.
