Dear Sirs
Since the release of our Service Letter SL00-382/JSB dated June 2000, regarding
PC-rings for Large Bore engines (for which the PC-ring was already standard), the
PC-ring has been introduced as standard for the above-mentioned engine types as
well, and the present Service Letter is, thus, intended both as a follow-up and a
supplement to SL00-382/JSB.
In the case of slim-type liners, which are characterised by having no cooling bores
and by having inner contact on the sealing face between cylinder liner and cylinder
cover, the PC-ring will be part of the structure, tightly positioned between the liner and
cover landing surfaces (see enclosed sketch).
Such a set-up calls for special precautions since the cylinder cover would suffer
damage without either a PC-ring or a dummy-ring installed in the cylinder liner during
assembly. A dummy ring provides no scraping effect, but has material characteristics
similar to those of the PC-ring.
The need for a dummy-ring arises in situations where running the engine with a
PC-ring is either not possible, or not wanted, for one or more units. This would be the
case if, for example, the original PC-ring for some reason has been damaged beyond
re-use, and the liner is assumed to be worn too much for the installation of a new PC-
ring without risking contact with the piston topland.

A similar scenario may occur in the case of a temporary, but significant, increase in
the liner wear rate in relation to the PC-ring wear rate.
If, for some reason, a new PC-ring is to be mounted in a used cylinder liner, special
consideration must be given to the wear conditions of the liner. If the liner diameter at
the piston skirt TDC position, i.e. at approx. measuring point No. 5, has increased
beyond 0.2% in relation to the nominal measurement of a new liner (i.e. 1.2 mm for a
60 cm bore liner), we recommend the mounting of a dummy-ring instead of a new
PC-ring. For further details, we refer to the instruction book for each engine type.
For engines equipped with a PC-ring, the standard piston guiding tool must be
replaced by or supplemented with an appropriately updated version of the tool, in
order to facilitate the mounting of the piston into the cylinder liner.
Finally, it should be noted that the “simple but important routines which should be
observed when overhauling a unit equipped with a PC-ring”, as recommended in
SL00-382, still apply.
For the engines covered by the present Service Letter (slim-type liners), the PC-ring is
naturally even more to be regarded as an integral part of the cylinder liner design.
For reasons of safety, we now recommend that the PC-ring is always removed from
the liner before the piston. This is intended to prevent any possible lifting of the liner
while attempting simultaneous removal of the piston and the (possibly stuck) PC-ring.

Yours faithfully
