The following instructions explain how to replace Figure 1: Sensor Module


the sensor module in a TracPhone® V11/V11-IP
antenna.

Important!
Gyros are sensitive to shock. Handle the sensor
module carefully to avoid damage.

Tools Required
This procedure requires the following tools:
• #1 Phillips screwdriver
• Phillips torque screwdriver set to 21 in.-lbs
• Flat-head jeweler’s screwdriver
• Flat-head torque screwdriver set to 5 in.-lbs
• 7/16" socket/ratchet or nut driver

Step 1 - Replace the Sensor Module


Follow the steps below to swap out the sensor
module.
a. Disconnect AC power from the TracPhone
antenna, and power off and unplug the ICM
(V11-IP) or modem and CommBox-ACU (V11).

WARNING

Be sure to disconnect AC power from the


antenna before proceeding. The vessel’s circuit
breaker must be locked open for the duration of
this procedure. Failure to disconnect power risks
electric shock, potentially resulting in DEATH.

b. Using a 7/16" socket/ratchet or nut driver, Figure 2: Service Hatch
unlock the three hex latches securing one of the
service hatches to the baseplate (see Figure 2).
Open the hatch.
NOTE: If you are unable to work through the hatch, you
may remove the radome instead.

tightening the gyro cable connector’s retaining
screws. Hatch

c. Disconnect the gyro and GPS cables from the


sensor module (see Figure 3). To avoid breaking
the DB9 connector’s retaining screws, loosen the
retaining screws with a jeweler’s screwdriver. Figure 3: Sensor Module Cables and Captive Screws

d. Loosen the three captive screws securing the


sensor module to the back of the reflector.
Remove the sensor module (see Figure 3).
e. Apply a drop of the supplied Loctite 242 thread-
locking compound to the threads of each
captive screw of the replacement sensor
module.
f. Secure the replacement sensor module to the
back of the reflector. Tighten the captive screws
to approximately 21 in-lbs of torque.
g. Reconnect the gyro and GPS cables. Tighten the
DB9 connector’s retaining screws to
approximately 5 in.-lbs of torque. Do not
overtighten – these screws break easily.
h. Inspect the inside of the antenna to make sure
you have not left any tools inside. Then close the
hatch and lock its three hex latches.
i. Reconnect AC power to the antenna.

The sensor module’s gyros need to be calibrated to
work with the antenna’s main board.

Important!
Calibrate the gyros only while the vessel is
stationary in calm seas.

a. Turn on the CommBox-ACU and modem and


wait five minutes for system startup.
b. At the CommBox-ACU’s front panel, press
MENUS until the display shows
“DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS” (see Figure 4).
c. Press ACCEPT.
d. At “KVH SUPPORT IP,” press NEXT.
e. At “CALIBRATE GYROS,” press ACCEPT.
f. At “PROCEED WITH CAL?,” press ACCEPT.
g. Verify that the azimuth (AZ), elevation (EL),
and skew gyros all pass.
The replacement procedure is complete!
