1.0 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Assalamualaikum w.b.t.

Greetings to all.

First and foremost, I am grateful to the Allah S.W.T for His assistance during this

practical training in the time of the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak since December 2019.

Being able to finish my internship program during the high risk situation really makes me

realize that without his blessings all of this will never happen.

Secondly, I would like to express my gratitude to Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM)

for allowing their students to proceed with the internship program despite of the deadly

pandemic in the past two years.

Furthermore, I would like to thank my lecturer, Mr. Ahmad Syakir Salman bin Salleh

@ Abdul Latif with his teaching and guidance throughout my practical training period. Not

to forget my superiors at YTL Constructions, Mrs. Natasha binti Zulkifli and Mrs. Nina

Farizah binti Jamil for assisting me adapting in public relations and corporate field despite

of my different background as a broadcasting student.

Thank you also to my family and friends for their support in the time of need during

the practical training. Without them, I may not be able to maintain my momentum to finish

this internship.

Last but not least, to my dear self who is always determined in facing the hardships

and challenges during this internship. Being able to arrive at this point of time is already

the biggest achievement of my academic journey in UiTM since 2018.

I
2.0 ABSTRACT

This report describes and explains my journey of internship training at YTL Construction
within 14 weeks to fulfil the requirement for Apprenticeship (COM664). The training
started from 12th October 2020 and ended on 24th January 2021 with estimated duration of
14 weeks. YTL Construction is a well-known construction company in Malaysia originally
known as Syarikat Pembenaan Yeoh Tiong Lay (SPYTL). The internship training was
located at Menara YTL in Bukit Bintang Street, Kuala Lumpur. During internship training,
I experienced new tasks, work cultures and values in Public Relations and Corporate
Communication. This is the first time I experienced real hands-on working environment
since both Public Relations and Corporate Communication are quite different from what I
studied in Bachelor of Mass Communication (Hons.) Broadcasting syllabus. Initially, I felt
difficult and challenging to adapt with the new environment and the work nature, but
eventually I managed to adapt and keep learning from my fellow colleague at YTL
Construction. While completing the internship, some of my ideas were rejected and some
were modified and these experiences helps me to improve myself better and prevent from
repeating the same mistakes. My supervisors always give constructive whenever I did some
mistakes and I found that it is quite helpful for me to learn and adapt with the new
environment. I learned that as a human being; it is normal to make mistakes but somehow
we can avoid the mistakes from happening twice by following the procedures. Other than
that, the internship program exposed me on how the company runs which is totally different
from what being taught in the classroom. I faced with shorter due dates during the
internship training which helps me increase my work productivity and critical thinking
when creating a new content or completing the task given. Moreover, I’m able to improve
my self-confidence and responsibilities towards the task given during the internship period.
This can be considered as a preparation for me before starting my future career path. In a
nutshell, I believe that this Integrated Internship Program at YTL Construction provides
me with various work experiences, work cultures and work values which is crucial for me
to begin with my future career path. By completing the internship training I believe that
this program helps the student in adapting and preparing with the real working
environment; despite of the MCO announcement and the SOPs given by the government
throughout the training session. I also learned that students should prepare themselves
better in language proficiency especially in Bahasa Malaysia and English to strengthen oral
presentation and writing skills.

3.6. YTL Construction’s Integrated Internship Program : Practical Training

The Integrated Internship Program (IIP) is YTL Construction’s a paid internship

program for students looking for internship opportunities during the last semester

of their Bachelor Degree program.

The program aims to provide dynamic young individuals who are passionate

about creating a better built environment with exposure to different aspects of YTL

Construction’s business, depending on their area of study. The program includes

in-office and on-site exposure, as well as on-the-job training.

Through this program, students don’t just gain the knowledge and skills, but

also the experience of working in the construction business. Students who perform

exceptionally well during the internship period may be offered positions within the

organization upon graduation. The Integrated Internship Program focuses on:

 Developing the technical skills needed for specific career pathways.

 Development of soft skills to be able to be an active, contributing team player.

 Matching the student’s knowledge to work experience opportunities based on

individual interests and skills, with the aim of developing specific skill sets.

 Building the student’s understanding of and appreciation for YTL

Construction’s collaborative work culture.

 Clearly communicating what is expected of employers and employees in the

construction industry, with specific emphasis on YTL Construction.

 Providing a mentoring environment to help build understanding and

appreciation for the construction industry as a whole (SPYTL, Integrated

Internship Programme, 2021).

4
4.0 MAIN REPORT

During the Integrated Internship Program at YTL Construction, I was assigned under

Stakeholder and Strategic Communications Department led by a Head of Department, Mrs.

Natasha binti Zulkifli. This department is divided into three different teams which are the

communication team, land acquisition team and liaison officer.

Currently, YTL Construction focus is on a mega project called Projek Landasan

Berkembar Elektrik Gemas - Johor Bahru (PLBEGJB), a project under the jurisdiction

from Ministry of Transport Malaysia. This project is a complement to the entire Projek

Landasan Berkembar Elektrik Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) on the west coast

of Peninsular Malaysia from Padang Besar to Johor Bahru.

In Stakeholder and Strategic Communication Department, I was placed in the

Communication Team led by an Assistant Communication Manager, Mrs. Nina Farizah

binti Jamil. This team task is to provide information regarding YTL Construction projects

to the locals and also staffs at YTL Construction. Because this project involves YTL

Construction, the communication team need to ensure that the locals are well-informed

about the safety measures that need to be taken. Especially to those who live near the

project construction area which also includes the school area.

Other than that, Communication Team also assigned to remind and inform YTL

Construction staffs about the current situation of pandemic Covid-19, creating events

throughout the year and managing the social media content.

5
4.1. List of Duties and Job Descriptions

1. Developing the technical skills needed for specific career pathways.

This is because this company focuses more on corporate communication. As an

intern I need to always be confident with what I am doing; for example, the

internship program was still going on despite of the Movement Control Order

(MCO) by the government. In order to remind other about the Standard Operation

Procedures (SOPs), I need to read thoroughly and describe the words clearly to

ensure that the message is conveyed through newsletters and posters. So that the

recipients are well informed.

2. Development of soft skills to be able to be an active, contributing team player.

As a part of the Communication Team, I need to be active and contributive to

others since there are so many restrictions given from the government regarding

the pandemic. I need to be able to persuade and inform others whom I have not

even met in person.

For example, when YTL Construction create a program called Christmas Town

Hall, I am in charge of the well-being of our guest such as their preparation before

performance, their resting area as well as I need to be able to guide them in and

out of the building without having any problems due to the fact that the guest are

not local.

6
3. Matching the student’s knowledge to work experience opportunities based on

individual interests and skills, with the aim of developing specific skill sets.

As an intern need to be able to relate the things that had been taught in their

syllabus and practiced hands on during programs and event. For example, I was

assigned to create a video for Christmas Eve which the video will later be posted

on YTL Construction’s Instagram. I need to make sure the proposal of idea,

preparation for shooting and the message in the video can be easily understood as

what I have learned in my class during academic classes at campus.

4. Building the student’s understanding of and appreciation for YTL

Construction’s collaborative work culture.

As an intern, I need to know and understand the work culture and value at YTL

Construction which consist of the five cores which are honesty, hard work, moral

responsibility, togetherness and vitality.

5. Clear communication is expected by employers and employees in the

construction industry, with specific emphasis on YTL Construction.

As an intern, I need to be able to communicate and convey information fluently to

other employees and employers especially when I am placed in the

Communication Team. For example when I am doing my presentation regarding

any task to other staff, I need to be able to explain issue, find the good problem

and a better solution from the problem that may arises.

7
6. Providing a mentoring environment to help build understanding and

appreciation for the construction industry as a whole.

Internship program should provide the student with complete training and

exposure to the real world working culture. As for the Integrated Internship

Program in YTL Construction, they provide me as the intern with various

experience from which I have never had learned during my academic classes. As

a broadcasting student, being able to observe, adapt and grow with your

surrounding based on what is needed is the most important thing.

Students were taught and advised to do presentation in English where some of

them might not be able to do it fluently but here during the internship, everyone is

not judgmental on the contrary helpful to others in order to understand each other

and focus towards the goal of the company.

4.2. Intern’s Responsibilities

As an intern, I am obliged to meet some of the responsibilities below.

1. General knowledge

Because I am in the Communication Team, I need to make myself aware of

what happened locally in our country and globally every day. I have to keep

myself updated with the recent news and information so that I will not convey

wrong message to the public and also YTL Construction staff.

8
2. Content creation

As mentioned before, Communication Team are also assigned in managing the

content on YTL Construction social media and on newsletter updates. I need

to be able to create a content which suits the general idea of YTL Construction

staff and their social media viewers.

The idea created cannot be too vague or shallow or be copied from the internet

but it needs to be derived in our own perception so it could meet everyone

preference when reading ad viewing the content.

3. Sensitivity

Here in YTL Construction, they have many staff which comes from many

different races, religion and background. So as a part of the communication

team, the sensitivity is crucial in order to create content and convey messages

to staff and locals so the messages will not be misunderstood.

4. Dateline

Dateline is one of the most important thing while doing my practical at YTL

Construction because YTL Construction have already had their vision and

mission which they have to provide global standard of work. Being able to

meet the dateline is a proof where the staff are not pretending to be good but

they are actually good ant keeping promises and keeping their standard.

9
4.3. Working Environments & Department Layouts

Stakeholder and Strategic Communications department role to convey

information, meet with people and deal with problems that may arises throughout

the project. Here is how the department prove that by following the cores of YTL

Work Culture and Values proves that everything can be sorted out and be managed

carefully at ease.

In YTL Construction, there is always a solution for each problem. For

example, when our government announced of the CMCO in the early of October

2020, YTL Construction have become very concerns about their staff’s well-being.

Because of the limitation of people allowed in the office they came out with a plan

of making their staff schedules alternatives by week. They decided to create a

rotational team schedule which is Team A, B and C.

When the CMCO was announced, these teams will not be able to meet each

other unless they held an online meeting among themselves. This is to ensure that

there are low casualties for the staff who will be exposed and infected by Convid-

19 hence continuing their work and project as usual without any disruption.

Other than that, YTL Construction practiced family oriented business. As

mentioned before, currently YTL Construction is focusing on their double

electrified track PLBEGJB so there are some officers who are needed to go out to

the site and check on any problems that may aroused. Due to this matter, the Board

of Director gladly informed that the fees for swab test are covered by YTL

Construction.

10
Next, a skill that I’ve learned is to be able to read the room. The surrounding

staff around my environment are focus and not easily distracted with others

personal issue. Each of us are given our own task and they taught me to always

help others whenever I am capable landing a hand. An example of this is when

they are planning to strengthen staff’s language proficiency, however they require

to deal with a project within a time of turmoil such as the floods and pandemic.

With whatever capabilities I have, I will help wherever I was needed.

What my superiors taught me is that whenever you feel like you can help other

or provide others with any assistance please be happy to reach out to them.

Finally, always have backup plans. As we all know, we can plan anything

that we wanted to, regarding any issue that matters but here in YTL Construction

especially under Natasha, we are opt to discover not only one or two option. Not

only plan A or plan B but we are advised to move further than that and be creative

when finding any option or solution towards the problems that we faced.

For instance, when Christmas Eve was just around the corner, despite of having

a poster or a newsletter blasted to everyone. They decided to celebrate among the

staff but following the SOPs announced by the government like only 30 people are

allowed in one big meeting room, using hand sanitizers, body temperature check

and many more.

11
4.4. Skills Gained

Industrial training is a platform for students to gain real-time experience to better

help them understand their future careers path.

Here at YTL Construction, it is important that you can multi-tasks. Being able

to perform many tasks at once will be helpful to an intern especially during the

outbreak where there are limitation of people available in the work space area.

Besides, you can increase your work productivity and help you to arrange and

focus on your task.

For instance, in the Communication Team, I am usually given a task to create

a reminder poster regarding the pandemic such as safety precaution measure that

should be emailed to every staff at SPYTL every week but, at the same time, I was

given a task to create a content for Women in Rail (WIR) Malaysia since our head

of department, Mrs. Natasha is the Founding Director of this non-government

organization. Even though I was assigned to create five posters weekly for SPYTL

staff based on the current situation, I am still able to create a video for WIR’s

Instagram and that does not affect my work productivity.

Furthermore, as an intern in Communication Team, I learned a lot of

communication skills. Being able to have a simple talk with other employees or

employers does not mean that you have good communication skills. Good

communication skills require you to be able to convey and understand messages

and information towards the other parties especially when dealing with client.

When interning as Communication Officer, it is crucial that you are able to explain

your terms and jurisdictions based on the case given.

12
During the internship program, I was given a task to find a website developer

who can meet our demand and yet give us a better quotation. I called a few of the

website developers from Exabyte partner list and have had to explain what I need

them to do for me. In the beginning, I was having trouble to explain and describing

the details needed. However, eventually I learned that to ensure that both parties

understand what was needed, I had to use pictures to aid them to further

comprehend the task at hand. Some example would be, creating illustrative

explanation or giving direction on how the website should look like.

Communication not about being verbal. There are various ways to

communicate with others so that the information that is conveyed is easily

understood. As a communication student, I need to hone my communication skill

in various ways to ensure my surrounding co-worker and I work in harmony such

giving the right information or instruction for a given task.

A must have while interning is having good writing skills. Most of the tasks

given requires me to do a write up in both languages; Bahasa Malaysia and

English. Good writing skills includes a comprehensive understanding in

vocabulary and grammar; by having those capabilities we are able to avoid simple

grammatical error.

Other than that, time management is important for everyone to succeed. Time

management is what I learned during the internship. It is not only about clocking

in to work early or having your task submitted by the deadline moreover, properly

arranging your work schedule.

13
During the internship, everyone is compulsory to join the conference call at

9.30 am every day. This conference call is important since most of us are working

from home in an alternating weekly schedule. Here we update our work progress

and also discuss among the department if any problem arises. It is importance for

everyone to join this conference at the time given because throughout the day

everyone is busy with their own personal task assigned to them.

Finally, the skills that I gained during the internship is critical thinking. To

be able to think critically when facing problem is one major skills that is needed

often. As a student, I tend to get consultation from my lecturer if I have any

problems. When it comes to handling problems in real working scenario, I need to

be able to find the best solution to work things out.

For instance, when I need to create a reminder poster to all SPYTL staff

regarding the pandemic safety precautions. There are so many posters available

online but how do I make my posters more informative and at the same time

unique. I have to read a lot of article and news reports which not only covers the

news inside of Malaysia but also internationally. By doing so, I will be able to

create a new poster content without worrying that I might have the same content

as the internet posters.

Another scenario is when I was assigned to lead the website development

project. I need to call every website developer and present to them the ideas of

developing the Women in Rail Malaysia existing website. I have to do a lot of

research about the terminology that these developers use before I can reach out to

them. These words are such as domain, host, back end systems, front end systems

14
and many more. And instead of just explaining and writing emails to them, I

decided to draw and screen capture the page that our founder director wants to

upgrade. By doing so, our requirements are easier to be met and we can save a lot

of time explaining.

4.5. Equipment, Software & Tools Provided

Interns are equipped with several equipment and software to help them with their

tasks and assignment. First and foremost is our access card to Menara YTL.

Menara YTL is a new YTL Group building which gathers each and every company

under YTL Group. The access card is not only to enter the building but it is a way

to identify my attendance daily. For those who does not have the access card, they

can register at the concierge and claims visitors pass. But the visitors pass only

allowed their users up until level 8. This access card also use to enter each office

doors and staircase.

Secondly, the IT staff also provide me with an office laptop. The reason why

they provide this is because, some of the task might need me to use the company’s

system which they won’t allow it on any other devices such as printing, personal

email, company calendar and leave application system. All of these systems are

built-in in the laptop so if I need to use it I don’t have to download the system or

application myself.

Other than that, they also provide me a personal work space area which I can

choose where I wanted to sit. Even though most of the time are meeting and dealing

with clients but sometime I do need a place to work on my own. Especially when

15
I need to create a poster or I need to write a document which requires me to sit

down and brainstorm my ideas. This personal work space is very comfortable

because I didn’t have to share with any other colleagues. Everyone have their own

desk and it is spacious for a single person to do their work.

This table also have three drawer compartment which differentiate in sizes and

I can store my laptops whenever I need to go out for lunch break or going home.

This is very helpful since each drawer have locks, so I don’t have to worry about

my stuff goes missing from the drawer.

4.6. Theoretical Concept Application

During the internship I realized that I used some of these theories when adapting

with the new work environment. First theory that I applied is The Inverted-U

Theory. The Inverted-U Theory is created from its name of the curve created when

the correlation between pressure and performance of an individuals. According to

Yerkes and Dodson, peak performance is achieved when the level of pressure we

experience is appropriate for the work we're doing. When we're under too much or

too little pressure, our performance declines (Tools, 2020). I personally agree with

this theory because we cannot stay at our own comfort zone all the time. The task

given are not always difficult or easy. During the internship program, I faces many

new challenges and obstacles. Especially when I need to converse in English every

time I need to explain myself.

Being a broadcasting student normally we go to our classes or studio or went

out for any shooting progress. But when I was assigned to be in a corporate

16
communication team, this is a big challenge to me since I have minimal knowledge

about corporate communications. The pressure comes when I need to ensure every

messages or information conveyed are flawless without any grammatical

problems. It has to be perfect. In corporate communication, the most important

thing is confidence and knowledge. Whenever I’m explaining myself to others, I

have to clarify every points with some backup plans if my viewers or listeners

don’t understand.

What I do is that I read, consult and refer the previous works from my fellow

colleague on how the job is done. And eventually I learned that there is more to

communication then meets the eye. There are various ways to communicate with

others. What’s important is that I know which one is suitable for each occasion.

This theory believes that there are four key factors affecting the curve which

are skill level, personality, trait anxiety and task complexity. As a student I thought

my skills are well developed since I’m an active student during my time at campus

but there are so many more to be honed. One’s personality is important because to

make your clients comfortable with you, you need to have an attractive personality.

Other than dressing up nicely, well-trained table manners or being soft spoken;

having yourself as attractive as possible is also the key to success. For example,

when I was asked to lead the website upgrade project. What I need to understand

is how these website developers do their works. Then I set a meeting with them to

discuss more about our budget and also plans.

The Inverted-U Theory helps me to observe and manage these four factors,

aiming for a balance that supports engagement, well-being, and peak performance.

17
As a result, I am able to close a deal with the clients easily and met the requirement

that my superior have set on me.

The second theory that I applied during the internship training is Social

Marketing Theory. Social marketing theory is a collection of theories that focus

on how socially valuable information can be promoted. This theory has been used

by social and welfare organizations to help promote or discourage various

behaviors. The theory is administrative in nature in such that it seeks to outline a

framework that can be used to design, implement and evaluate information

campaigns. The target audience is identified based on their information need.

Once this is done information is packaged and distributed in a manner that will

be easily accessible to the intended audience (Theory, 2018).

The theory is an attempt to clearly understand how societal and psychological

factors work to successfully manipulate them in order to increase how effective

mass media information campaigns are. The theory focuses on helping identify

the various social and psychological barriers that hinder the flow of information

through the mass media and offers ideas and ways to overcome these barriers.

These strategies range from being indigenous to the use of saturation advertising.

During the Movement Control Order, I was assigned to find a best way

possible to inform the SPYTL staff regarding the safety precautions that should be

taken into account while they are working outside and in the office. I have to create

a short and informative poster to remind the staff about the safety precaution so

that they will read and not neglect the posters given to them through email.

By using so many figures and animation, I found out that is the best way for

me to inform others about the danger of Covid-19 and what we can do to avoid

them from entering our circle; especially to those who are working on site or in

the office. As a result, the message from the poster is delivered well and everyone

18
follows the safety precaution and regulation that should be done whilst we are

facing the pandemic together.

Last but not least, I applied the Adaptation Theory while working during

my internship program. This theory explains ability of someone to adapt with

current environment and be able to survive in any situation and be able to survive.

Adaptation theory, also known as survival theory or survival of the fittest, is an

organism's ability to adapt to changes in its environment and adjust accordingly

over time. Adaptations occur over generations of a species with those traits that

help an individual animal eat and mate most profusely being passed down from

generation to generation until the whole species changes to be better suited to

their environment (King, 2018).

For instance, I need to be able to adapt with the hectic working environment

and complete any task given from my superiors hence the shorter time period

given as compared to the time period given when I need to complete my academic

assignments. The working environment is totally different from the classroom as

I need to be a fast learner in order to learn every order of the corporate company

and corporate communication. Furthermore, I need to be able to adapt with the

date line, rejection and last minute task given. To ensure that I am capable of

working and adapting with the new environment I need to make sure that I jot

down every important things, date and information given from my superior.

Other than that I’m also advised to record any meetings if possible if I don’t

want to leave out any important information mentioned during the meetings.

Eventually, when I applied this theory I feel much better and does not afraid in

managing the task given and it increase my self-confidence to pass with flying

colors while doing it.

19
4.7. Human & Interpersonal Relations

SPYTL have good human relation and interpersonal relation values. I’ve never

regret the decision to apply for internship here. As an intern here, they teach me to

be a team player. Even though we are not from the same team or department, we

are obliged to help each other in any way possible. As mentioned before, we have

early morning conference call every day. This is related to my point of being a

team player because while we are in the conference call, my superiors would love

to see everyone participate in every discussion or idea generation.

I think the reason why my superiors are behaving like that is because they

thought that every single person in the department is important and no one should

be left behind. Since the company is family-oriented business, they tend to care for

each other very much and they are very understanding when it comes to personal

matter because they does not want anybody to feel like they were left out from the

conversation or from the group.

Furthermore, I’ve learned that good communication is important. To be able

to communicate with others from different department is crucial because the idea

of teamwork is being understanding towards each other. For example, when I was

assigned to create a video for Christmas Eve. My supervisor told me that I need to

get at least one respondent recorded in each department. At first I find that it is

quite impossible since I barely knew anyone at the company. But then when I knew

from whom I can retrieve the information, it is easier for me to mingle around and

shoot some video clips and combined in the Christmas Eve video.

20
Even though we are human and we stay in the same country but it doesn’t mean

we can easily communicate with each other. I need to determine any

communication barrier that may exist between me and other colleagues before I

can communicate with them easily.

Finally, being caring among my colleague helps to build my self-confidence.

There are various ways of showing that you are care for others. In my case, my

supervisor always ask me if I am capable of doing the task given. Not because she

downgraded me being an intern but she realize that as an intern I still have so many

things to learn and cope with the new situation.

I personally think by doing so I felt like I was given attention to everything that

I do. Some of the colleagues also offer me to tag along with them during the lunch

hour. Even the bosses are open to sit on the same table with other staff during lunch

hour because they thought that positions in the company does not make them

higher than anyone else. The higher the position that they have the bigger their

responsibilities and despite of that they will need greater support from their

employees.

In conclusion, I feel that SPYTL have a great work culture and values

especially in terms of human relations and interpersonal relationships between

employers and employees. This is the reason why they can succeed and meet their

goals fast.

21
4.8. Problems Encountered & Solving Actions

As a human being, we are not perfect. We make mistakes and we learn from it.

During my internship program there are many problems that I have encountered in

order to complete my task and my internship program. Enclosed are a few

problems which I have encountered and how do I solve them.

The first problem to be encountered during the internship is Movement

Control Orders. I begin my internship on 12 October 2020 which Malaysia

currently under recovery Movement Control Order (MCO). The economy went

back to normal as in people are allowed to travel and go to their work but still have

to follow some of the SOPs given by the government. Two days after I start my

industrial training, the government announced the implementation of Conditional

Movement Control Order (CMCO) due to the increasing numbers of active cases

all over the country.

The CMCO affected many people especially students who have travelled

across from their hometown to their internship area. When the CMCO is

announced and began to take effect immediately, SPYTL decided to launch the

alternate work schedule with three teams A, B and C. These team works with

weekly alternate between them. Due to this restriction, I need to cope with one

week work from home and one week in the office alternately. For me this is not

practical because in the area which I rent have a weak internet connection. So I

would have a little problem to attend the conference call or online meeting online.

But eventually, I manage to handle this by changing my telecommunication from

Umobile to Maxis and I got better internet connection to solve my problems.

22
Secondly, I found that there is a communication barriers between me and

another colleague. The main barrier is that I have a little problem in

communicating in English fluently because my lack of practice. Even during my

study I did my presentation in English but the presentation only last for a few

minutes compared to the industrial training, I need to communicate in English

fluently all the time. But I took this positively because, it is the opportunity for me

to practice my speaking skills and no one is going to judge me at SPYTL.

I tried my best to converse in English and read a lot of English articles and

books to increase my skills, vocab and also general knowledge. As a result, I find

myself slightly proficient at using English as my second language. Although my

English is not as good as Bahasa Malaysia but eventually I can speaks fluently

without having trouble to clarify what I’m trying to say.

Furthermore, the third problems that I faced is rejection crisis. When I started

the internship, I was wondering what will happen if I give my opinion and idea

then it got rejected. I might feel sad about it but actually rejection is a good thing

when you take it positively.

For example, when I was assigned to lead with the Women in Rail Malaysia

website development given by my supervisor Nina Jamil. I was shocked because

I have minimal knowledge about how does website works. I’m bad in

understanding my superiors explanation about the website update which they

requires me to do and it took a longer time for me to digest everything that was

explained by them. When I gave my opinion about the website update plan, it

23
seems that they are not really satisfied with my works and my ideas got rejected a

few times until I felt like giving up.

Eventually, I understand what are the requirements and criteria needed to

update the website system and I found a good way in explaining my idea to my

superior and also to the website developer.

Next, idea generation and content creation. This is one of the problem I

faced when I got so many rejection during the internship program. The idea is

rejected because it is repetitive and too general. For example, I need to create five

reminder posters internally amongst the SPYTL staff weekly. When I submit my

idea for the poster eventually they got rejected. This is because some of my idea

have been done before and some of them are repetitive and can be found on the

internet.

As a result I felt a little bit frustrated when I got so many ideas rejected but

eventually I understand why and I did a lot of research about the topic that I wanted

to write beforehand. I read many articles on the internet and combine the article

content into a simpler one to generate my own idea and finally I did it. I have five

posters approved and posted to every SPYTL staff regarding the safety precautions

that should be done during the pandemic outbreak.

Finally, the biggest problem that I faced is transportation limitation. I’m

from Johor and I came to Kuala Lumpur by bus because I’m not used of the roads

yet. So I have to discover another transportation method for me to go to work and

get back afterwards. While I was in Kuala Lumpur I learned that some of the public

transportation are quite useful since they have a good offer for the price.

24
I used MyPass30 for Rapid KL public transport to go to work and get back

after the office hour. The pass only costs me RM30 monthly and I got limitless

number of usage and it really helps to reduce my transport cost. Instead of using

Grab or taxi, I can use Rapid KL unlimited travel and save a lot of money for my

rent and food throughout the industrial training period. The company also provide

me with a work permit letter which make me easier to go to office whenever

necessary.

4.9. Major Accomplishments

Since four months of internship, here are a few major accomplishments that I had

during the internship training.

1. Christmas Eve video.

This video is created since I hate the idea of using poster to celebrate Christmas

with another colleague who celebrated them. I proposed the idea of making a

Christmas video which is a compilation of gifts handover and also a stop

motion in the beginning of the video.

At first I was targeting to have everyone to be included in the video but

when I proposed my idea, Nina asked me to reach out to the staff who

celebrated Christmas only because we did not want any sensitivity issue rises.

So I contacted my colleague to get a few information and names of those who

celebrate Christmas and in a week time I got 10 people who are willing to help

and participate in the video.

25
While shooting for the video, I also got some help from Iylia; an officer

in our communication team. Since she already knew a few people in SPYTL

so we decided to meet the participants and shoot their video around the office.

After one day of shooting then I focus on editing the video and choosing the

suitable background music for the video. When everything was done I submit

the video to my supervisor Nina to get her comments before submitting to Head

of Department; Natasha for final approval.

When Natasha approved the video, I send a copy to Nina again after a

few amendments before the video get posted on SPYTL’s Instagram account

before Christmas Eve.

2. 2020 End Year video.

To create this video, I’m inspired by the Christmas video I created before this

because for me through video and visual I will gain a better engagement on

Instagram rather than just posting a poster.

I proposed the idea of creating a compilation video which compiles all

SPYTL activities throughout 2020 to my supervisor and she approves it. The

chronological events for this video I gained from Google Drive which were

saved there by one of the communication team officer.

I used Filmora X to edit the video. Since this video is only a

compilation from the previous activities done by SPYTL, it is not as hard ad

doing the Christmas Eve video. Because this time I don’t have to move around

26
the building to shoot for people, instead I just used the events title and dates

given in Google Drive.

As a result this video was faster to make because all of the content are

already there. I managed to fully rendered and submit the video to Nina within

two working day. After the video was approved by Natasha; Head of

Department of Stakeholder and Strategic Communication the video was

uploaded to SPYTL Instagram before year 2020 ends.

3. Covid-19 posters.

The Covid-19 poster are a reminder poster which communication team sends

to every SPYTL staff weekly.

To create the content, I have to read a lot of article and posters from

many sources such as World Health Organization (WHO), Centre for Disease

Control and Prevention (CDC), Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) and many

more. I have to do a lot of research and readings because I need to ensure that

my content are reliable and not fraud. To convey information to others, I have

to make sure that every content that I planned is new and fresh content aswell

as useful to all SPYTL staff.

Other than that, I need to make sure that my writing skills are good

enough. I will have to check my tenses and grammar when I wrote the content

before I submit the copy to my supervisor. This is to ensure that once the

content is approved there’s no need to revert back to me for a simple

grammatical error adjustments.

27
As a result I managed to create a few posters to remind the staff about

the Covid-19 pandemic. The posters will be shared in appendices.

4. Games for Instagram stories.

Inspired by other construction social media, my supervisor proposed the idea

of making a few Instagram template with games and quotes twice a month so

we can get an average engagement on our social media.

This story template I edited on Canva; an online editing application

which is very easy to use and have many choices of template given including

the fonts. The template consists of minimum 4 stories template which are days,

games, quotes and SPYTL tagline “Building The Right Thing”.

Sadly, the idea was proposed on the final week of my internship so I

only can help with it twice. The copy for this templates are enclosed in the

appendices. Personally I really like this idea because it will increase the

Instagram account engagement and also increase the amount of follower

interaction.

5. Website development for Women in Rail Malaysia.

Women in Rail Malaysia is a related job to my internship in YTL construction

because, my Head of Department; Natasha is the founder director of this non-

government organization.

Previously WIR Malaysia set up their website and membership

registration with Typeform online registration. But the application is vague and

28
cannot be edited once you have registered. Our founder wanted the website to

have an automate registration system which users can easily modify their

personal information whenever necessary.

To do that, I was assigned to lead this project and I need to find any

website developer with reasonable quotation to meet with WIR Malaysia

requirement. I contacted almost 10 website developers with quotation ranging

from RM300 to RM30, 000. The idea of automating the website system

includes

 We want to have a login and logout option for our members.

 We want our member to be able update their personal details on their own.

 We want to automate our website system.

 We want to be able to categorize our members into respective category.

 We want to be able to view all the data of our members in form of lists and

charts.

 We want to be able to export all the data of our members in form of list and

charts.

These are the requirements needed for the website updates idea. Before

I end my internship program, I managed to secure one website developer

known as Red Panda Ltd. This developer was personally chosen by

Natasha when I proposed to her about this company. Currently they are

planning another project for WIR Connect which will be connecting all

Women in Rail members across the globe.

29
5.0 ANALYSIS / REFLECTION

5.1. Practical Training Outcome

There are many new things that I learned during the internship training which

includes adaptation to the new working environment, working under pressure and

professional communication skills.

I learned to adapt with the new working environment which are completely

different from the situation I had during my studies. Assignment given have shorter

dateline period which I need to adapt quickly in order to become more productive

in completing my task. For example, I need to complete every single task before

the exact dateline because the task will be cross checked by my supervisor, Nina

Jamil before getting submitting for the final approval to our Head of Department.

Other than that, I need to adapt with the new working system which are

alternating schedule weekly due to the restrictions announced by our government.

The restrictions is good to break the chain of the pandemic itself but sometimes it

became so stressful because I need to deal with the weak internet connection at my

apartment.

Furthermore, I learned to work under pressure. There are a lot of task

assigned to me which needed to be done as soon as possible. For example, when

researching for new content and contacting with the website developer and at the

same time looking for any training provider who can provide trainings for YTL

Learning Academy; planned to be launched on early of 2021. Most of these tasks

need to be done at a time due to the same due date given from my superior.

30
Other than that, dealing with client such as the website developers can also

develop some tension and pressure since I can only communicate with them

through calls and emails. I didn’t think it is the best way to communicate but due

to the MCO I have to do it to prevent myself from being fined by the local

authorities. Eventually I managed to do it on my own and submit the task without

any problem occurs.

Last but not least, I learned about professional communication skills. I

learned how to handle people in a professional way through email, phone calls,

online meetings and face-to-face meetings. As mentioned before, SPYTL are

launching the YTL Learning Academy for their staff to boost their language

proficiency, soft skills, technical skills and many more.

Through professional communication skill, I managed to secure a few training

provider and get their quotation and syllabus that they can offer to YTL Learning

Academy Program. The training providers includes Institut Terjemahan dan Buku

Malaysia (ITBM), Pusat Citra Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Institut

Pendidikan Guru Kampus Bahasa Melayu, Cambridge English for Life and many

more.

As a conclusion, through professional communication skill I manage to deal

with clients and trainers to meet with our requirement at YTL Learning Academy

in SPYTL.

31
5.2. Intern’s Evaluation for YTL Construction’s Integrated Internship Program

5.2.1. Improvements

The company should provide the students with trainings that are related

to their course study. For example, as a broadcasting student I expect my

internship training will require me to do a lot of video but since the

communication team is more parallel to corporate communication. I

learned the way of corporate company convey their information to the

locals and their staffs differently with what I learned during my study.

But this is good for students as they can learn to adapt with new work

environment which are totally different from their course study.

Other than that, the company should provide the students with better

equipment and editing software such as laptop and Adobe Premiere Pro

editing application. This will definitely boost the student’s mastery skills

which will be needed once they are working in future. As a conclusion

the student will be able to be much more productive since the equipment

given is well prepared.

Finally, the company also can increase the intern’s allowance

from RM 800 to at least RM 900 per month. The reason is because

students who are doing their internship mostly need to pay for rent since

they are not living with their families. Other than that, the cost for

transportation and other daily needs are also should also be considered.

Since the cost of living in Kuala Lumpur is high and students need a lot

of money to settle down all the payments needed.

32
5.2.2. Strengths

The biggest strengths of the company is that they practiced what they

preach. As mentioned before YTL construction is a family business

company, they have their own philosophy which they believe in these

five (5) cores of YTL Group Core Values which are honesty, hard work,

moral responsibility, togetherness and vitality.

5.2.3. Weaknesses

I found that YTL Construction have their own weakness that they use to

trigger their success. Here in YTL Construction they are afraid of taking

risks. For example, many of the company leaders are the elderly leaders

who think differently from the youth nowadays. They have never thought

about using social media platform as an extension for them to reach out

to the locals.

I believe that by using social media such as Instagram, Twitter,

YouTube, LinkedIn and many more other application can increase their

engagement to the public three times as much as the old fashioned ways

such as using websites and Facebook. The youth nowadays are looking

forwards for any updates through most of these social media platform

and it will be such a waste if YTL Construction does not utilize it.

33
5.2.4. Opportunities

This company gives job opportunities to the fresh graduate if the student

performs well during internship training. For example, there were a lot

of previous internship students who has been offered for a job placement

as contract staff and starting their first career in YTL Construction. The

new staff can learn a lot of things from the senior employees who are

experienced in the way of the company. The internship training does not

only open for local students but also to international students and by

doing so it will give a golden opportunities for a student and the company

to learn about different work culture and value from other countries.

5.2.5. Threats

Finally, YTL Construction have many competition with other big

construction company such as IJM Corporation Berhad, Gamuda

Berhad, Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad and many more. The

competition is not only about getting tenders or project from government

but the way they convey information to the public through social media,

the way they are sensitive on the current issues and the way they portray

themselves to the public.

Even though YTL Construction is a big construction company,

there are many other big construction company which offers better

opportunities in terms of work culture, values, job opportunities and also

public engagements.

34
5.3. Faculty’s Courses Learned and Used in Practical Training

Courses Details

Principle of Translation BBM422 I used this course to complete my task

News Writing and Reporting COM411 especially when researching the content for the

English for Critical Academic Reading ELC501 Covid-19 poster, media press release for temporary

English for Report Writing EWC661 station and email with training provider and website

developers for YTL Learning Academy and

Women in Rail Malaysia website.

To write a good content, I need to do a lot

of researches on various topics. Through these

courses, I’m able to complete my tasks with flying

colors because I can easily focus on the topic and

type of researches that I wanted to depending on the

requirement asked from my superiors. These

courses also helped me in developing my writing

ability in both languages Bahasa Malaysia and

English.

Effective Speaking COM431 These courses are very useful when I am

Communication Theory COM530 was assigned to create a video where I need to find

Introduction to Communication and Media Studies COM410 participants to be included in the video.

Other than that, I use this course to explain

and secure a deal with training provider and website

35
developer regarding the assignment given to me for

YTL Learning Academy and Women in Rail

Malaysia website. By using these courses, I’m able

to read the room when I’m in the conversation.

Finally, these courses helped me to improve

my communication skills and avoid problems when

having conversation with employers, clients and

other colleagues.

Digital Photo Communication COM413 I used this courses a lot when I am editing

Introduction to Digital Video Editing BRO455 the Christmas Eve video and also 2020 Year End

Principle of Broadcasting BRO410 video. My Head of Department and Immediate

Supervisor are really particular about how the

picture composition, what are the video content,

and how does it useful to the viewers.

By using these courses, I’m easy to meet

their requirements without having any trouble while

presenting my idea and end product.

36
5.4. Student’s Preparation for Internship Training

1. Company background research

Students should do a thorough research about the company that they applied

for internship. This will give them better understanding about the work

environment at the company. Other than that, it will help student to prepare

themselves physically, mentally and emotionally before starting their

internship training at a respective company.

2. Multi-tasking

An active student should be able to multi-task. Basic multi-tasking skills are

good for an intern to begin with their training since we would like to impress

the company and also bring a good image and example as UiTM students.

3. Basic editing skills

Basic editing skills such as copy, crop, paste, aligning and few others should

be mastered by the students. Students attend their practical training to learn the

new work and ways in the related industry and company but without basic

editing skills, it would be a big problem for the students to excel during their

internship training.

4. Eager to learn

Student should show interest to learn new things to ensure that their internship

training will provide them with the best experience in the related industry. By

37
doing some research about the company and preparing themselves to perform

better during the training in future should help them develop their interest in

learning new things.

5. Language proficiency in writing and speaking

Some might think that they have already mastered in both languages especially

Bahasa Malaysia since it is their mother tongue but students usually neglect

this value since they only thought that during the training other skills is much

more important. For my opinion, student should practice and read more to

improve their language proficiency so they will not have any trouble during

the training such as fumbling, stuttering, wrong grammar and tenses and many

more.

5.5. Work Satisfaction at YTL Construction

YTL Construction have a good working environment. They always prioritize their

employers in every situation. I found myself satisfied while having my industrial

training here at YTL Construction because of their work culture and values that

they practiced.

Firstly, communication is important. Here in YTL Construction, they

supervised their employee’s behavior and work productivity. When their

employees have personal problems or work related problem, they are open to talk

about it and help their employees to solve the problem. Because they believe when

38
an employee is distracted their personal problem, their productivity will decline

and this will affect the company’s credibility as an international ranked company.

Secondly, YTL Construction specifically Stakeholder and Strategic

Communication department have a very good teamwork. Teamwork is crucial to

meet our goal. This is to ensure that everyone are active and productive while

completing their task even though they have so many dues to meet at a certain

time. For example, when I was included with the Christmas Town Hall program

all of the team are helpful to each other even though some of them have personal

task due within the same week. We help each other to carry and arrange food to all

YTL staff and at the same time, decorating and preparing for the area that will be

used during the event.

Furthermore, most of the staff have a good openness character and always

provide immediate assistance. I experienced this when I have trouble to shoot for

the Christmas Eve video since I didn’t know every staff well but everyone were so

helpful to me and provide me with all their might to complete the video. Some of

them are so excited when I was shooting the video when I mentioned that the video

will be posted on YTL Construction Instagram.

Other than that, I always had a constructive feedback from my supervisor.

For instance, when I was first doing the write up for the company which has a big

difference from the write up that I’ve made during my studies. She taught me on

how the tones and sentences should be more specific instead of having the write

up to be plain and general. She advised me to read books on self-improvement and

39
she also provide me with some material which I can refer to when I had trouble

doing the task given.

Finally, the staffs in YTL Construction are goal-driven. They always knew

what they wanted to achieve and have a set of planning on how to achieve the goal

set previously. It taught me on how to ideally and logically set a goal which can

be achieved within short time period instead of just dreaming big without any

planning and effort to do so. For example, while I was assigned to help with the

2021 Year Plan. I was thinking to create an event for World Forest Day but

somehow I didn’t realize that it was unpractical since we are in the midst of

pandemic.

40
6.0 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

6.1. Conclusion

The Integrated Internship Program at YTL Construction helps student to gain the

real experience in Public Relation and Corporate Communication. This training

provides the student with various real working experience, environment and work

load. Through this internship program student learn to prepare themselves

physically, mentally and emotionally during the time of need. Furthermore, the

student learn to survive in real working environment with various experience they

been through during the internship training. All of these experience will help the

students when they begin their real career in the future.

Other than that, the Integrated Internship Program helps the student in adapting

and preparing with the real working environment; despite of the MCO

announcement and the SOPs given by the government throughout the training

session.

Last but not least, even though there are many challenges I faced during the

internship training; I’m glad that I managed to complete the training without

having to extend the training session at YTL Construction.

6.2. Recommendation

My personal recommendation is that YTL Construction should hire more fresh

graduate in the company, who can contribute new ideas for content and design of

program or event. The combination of idea between freshly graduated staff with

experienced staff will make the idea more interesting and can be a stepping stone

41
to success better in future. The company should give fresh graduates trust and

opportunities to contribute back to the industry.

Finally, YTL Construction should focus more on using new media platform

such as Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and Spotify to get more engagement from

the public. They can provide content such as podcast and video on the platform so

it easily can be access. This can attract more engagement from the younger

generation; generation Z and millennial. From these engagements the company

gain extra revenue from the number of viewers on the YouTube which can help

boost the company’s profits.

laluan ini telah ditutup pada XX yang lalu bagi memberi laluan kepada kerja-kerja pembinaan
Projek Landasan Berkembar Elektrik Gemas-JB (PLBEGJB).
