Introduction:

Reinforced soil is a composite material formed by the interaction between a frictional

soil and Polymeric Geogrids/Geostraps. The PET reinforcement resist stresses produced within
the soil mass; stresses are transferred to the grid reinforcement by friction. Precast Concrete
Soil Wall constructed in the form of panels or blocks are used at the face of the reinforced
volume to prevent erosion of the backfill and to provide an aesthetic finish. The work shall
consist of Reinforced Soil Structures constructed of pre-cast concrete facing, polyester Geogrid /
Geostrap reinforcement and backfill material in compliance with the approved drawings.

The work shall generally be carried out in conformity to the MORTH “Specification for Road and
Bridge Works": 5th revision (2013), Section 3100.
Description of materials to be used:

The following materials are to be used in construction of RE walls.

For surface Improvement :

 Woven Geotextile – Woven Textile shall be placed between base soil and granular
sub- base fill to function as a separator and to maintain sub surface drainage.
 PP Biaxial Geogrid –Bi axial Geogrid used for enhancingthe bearing capacity of the
ground.
 Granular Sub-Base (GSB): The fill used as Granular Sub base should be tested to
ensure that the angle of shearing resistance is equal to or greater than the design
value of angle of shearing resistance and the materials conform to the MoRT&H
Specifications and other criteria specified in the design and drawings. The
Recommended frequency of testing is minimum one set or tests per source.

For RE Panel Erection:

 Pond Ash fill: The specifications of the reinforced Pond ash fill are
 Φ= 320, C = 0 KN/m3
 PVC Perforated Pipe: The perforated shall be 150mm PVC pipes with appropriate
numbers of “L” joints & “T” joints provided for drainage. As specified below:

 Geo composite: Geo composite Layer shall be provided on the inner wall of
the RE Wall to let the moisture seep to the PVC pipe.
 Geo strip: Geo strips of width P30 shall be 85mm and rest shall be 90mm
provided as per drawing.
 U Hook: U hooks used shall be 250 mm in length.

Sequence of Execution:-

For Ground Improvement:

 Recording of OGL, C&G and level recording of the ground.

 FDD Checking of soil.
 Excavation for Surface improvement upto required level on Both sides.
 Grading & Rolling of the bed & achieving 95% Compaction followed by FDD test.
 Installation of Woven Geotextile with the U Hooks placed in grid of 750mm -1000mm
& lap length of minimum 150 mm.
 GSB bed of 200 mm shall be provided followed by grading, rolling& FDD testing
(compaction 98%).
 PP Biaxial geogrid shall be installed on the GSB bed.
 GSB bed of 150mm shall be provided(Max- 200 mm), after that rolling, level checking
& FDD checking(compaction 98%).
 Levelling Pad of M15 PCC of width 350mm and height 150mm shall be poured. It must
be cast with a level tolerance +5mm and surface should be finished using a smooth
wood float. The Levelling must be cured for a minimum period of 72 Hours before
placement of panels (Photo Attached).
 A shear key is provided of M15 PCC to restrain lateral movement of RE panels.

For RE Panel Erection:

 A Batter of 10 shall be provided with wooden battens in order to erect the RE panels.
 The RE panels shall be fixed as per the drawing and the alignment & slope checking
shall be done simultaneously.
 Subsequently RE panels are Erected and pond ash filling is done in the alignment, PVC
perforated drainage pipe in the longitudinal direction shall be provided at height of
350mm above the service road level and T sections to be provided at appropriate
distance for draining out the moisture.
 Geo strips shall be installed as per drawing along with the reinforced pond ash filling
and shall be fixed with U hooks of 250mm.
 Rolling shall be done with vibratory rollers & the terminal 1500 mm near the RE
panels shall be done with Baby roller.
 EPDM pads shall be provided for packing of RE panels.
 Geo composite shall be provided on the inner surface of the RE panels for the entire
stretch to maintain drainage (adhesive).
 After the panels are erected , a coping beam shall be provided for levelling.
 After levelling, friction slab shall be casted and a 20mm compressible fill shall be
provided between the RE panel and the friction slab and atop it, the crash barrier
shall be casted of M35 concrete.
 The cross wall at the abutments shall be at a slope of 20 17’.
Precaution for Panel Installation Sequence:

 Workers shall stand on either side of the Panel during installation.

 Workers should hold the panel to place it in correct position.
 As soon as the panel is placed in position, the wooden clamp shall be fixed on both side
of panel. The crane should keep holding the panel.
 The alignment and levelling of the panel should be done with the help of crowbar
without disengaging the wooden clamp and holding the panel through sling. The crane
shall be released only after the alignment and the clamps are fully tightened to secure
the panel.
