Module 4 Assignment - Pamulaan School

This document discusses a school called Pamulaan Center for Indigenous Peoples Education that demonstrates ideals of human relations. The school celebrates diversity through its population of different indigenous tribes in the Davao region. It also promotes solidarity among tribes through cultural events that share traditions. However, the author worries this could potentially lead to apartheid with non-indigenous groups if solidarity is not also extended to them. Contemporary Philippine society reflects this ideal through diverse workplaces and communities like Metro Manila, but it may be absent in exclusive wealthy subdivisions where residents do not interact based on their material wealth status alone.

1. Take a look at a different kind of school. Identify the different groups that make up the
school.
In this paper, I will just reflect on the case of Pamulaan Center for Indigenous Peoples
Education at the University of Southestern Philippines in Davao City. I happened to visit this
school when I evaluated a project funded by the European Union. I interviewed some of its staff
and students including the one in the video. I know of a different school somewhere in Bukidnon
but it was closed because the school was used for communist propaganda by the leftist. So far I
cannot find extra ordinary schools in the country since they are bound to follow DepEd or
CHED.

In the case of Pamulaan, the school comprised indigenous people groups in Davao
region. It comprised Matigsalog which is one of the most marginalized IPs such as Talaandig,
Manobos, Talaingod, Mandaya, Bagobo, and Ata. And I was informed that there are some
Subanens too.

1.1 What ideal of human relations does the school demonstrate?

I think the dominant ideal of human relations reflected in Pamulaan is solidarity. The
school celebrates differences in terms of its population, language, and religion. The school is
represented by different tribal groups in the Philippines. The school have its own solidarity night
to encourage the students to display the talents for each tribe that is represented. The idea is to
instill respect for other’s cultures while maintaining their own.

Another important human relation displayed at Pamulaan is the celebration of diversity.

Students are coming from different ethnic tribes and the the school encouraged other tribes not
just in the region but throughout the country in order to share experiences and learn from each
other. I like their costumes. Students are encouraged to wear their own traditional attire to
appreciate diversity and allow them to manfest pride of their uniqueness.

What I am just worried is that, it will lead to potential aparthaid wth non IPs. Instead of
making bridges, it might create divide between IPs and the Hispanized Filipinos. As observed,
when people at the margin especially IPs are put together and start to share the historical
injustices inflicted by the so called Kristianos, the natural tendency is to insinuate hatred and
divide. But this can be avoided. Solidarity should not be limited to IPs from different tribes but it
should be extended to the Hispanized Filipinos that comprised the Kristianos. Solidarity should
also be extended to the Islamized Filipino tribal groups.

2. Where in contemporary Philippine society do you see this ideal reflected? Where is it
absent?
As I observed, the most diverse society in the Philippines is in Metro Manila. This region
is a collection of tribes from different parts of the country and the world. Just next door are
Cebuanos. In most cases, a dormitory is a collection of people from different parts of the country.
It is just unfortunate that they have to speak Tagalog as the common language. There are also
Muslims in Christian dominated villages.

Diversity is commonly found in the workplace. For example, the business process
outsourcing industry hire people from different background. The Visayans and Mindanaoans are
highly represented in call center jobs in Metro Manila. And I observed that Manilaneos are now
starting to respect non-tagalogs.

In a workplace, the workforce is composed of people from different regions. At the Asian
Development Bank where I worked since 2003, the work force is composed of Filipinos from
different regions with different languages. In addidition, the bank personnel is composed of
Japanese, Indians, Americans, Europeans, Chinese and other Asians. The community is
represented by people from different parts of the world. Working in solidarity is the common
matra. We don’t ask nationality but only work for a common good.

Where is it absent? I think it is absent among exclusive subdivistion. For example,

Corinthian Garden in Quezon City, and Dasma Village in Makati where only the elite can afford
to stay. In normal cases, the people in the community has no human interractions. The
community is rich and have all the amenities but has no life. The basis for admission to the
village is the display of material wealth.
