Open Ended Lab

This document is a lab report submitted by four students to their professor for their Electric Power Transmission course. It summarizes their study of short-term transmission lines using MATLAB. The key points are: 1) Short-term transmission lines have lengths below 80km and voltages below 69kV, making capacitive effects negligible. 2) The lab used MATLAB Simulink to model a three-phase source, transmission line using RLC branches with zero capacitance, loads, and measured voltage, current, power. 3) The students observed the simulation results and concluded they now better understand short-term transmission lines important for power systems in their country.

Objective: -
To Study and Analyze Short-Term Transmission Line
on MATLAB.

Apparatus: -
• Intel based computer
• MATLAB software

Short-Term Transmission Line:

In short term transmission line, the length of the line
is below 80km and line voltages is comparatively low (below 69KV).
Hence the capacitance effect of the line is very small almost
neglected because capacitance of line is depended on the length of
the line as the length of the transmission line is small that’s why
capacitance effect is neglected. The circuit diagram of transmission
line is given below

Advantages of Short-Term Transmission Line

• No corona loss
• Less insulators used
• Less conductor used
• High efficiency
• Good voltage regulation

Disadvantages of Short-Term Transmission Line
• I2 R loss is high as current is higher than voltage
• Not good for larger length

Procedure
• Firstly, we need an intel-based computer and MATLAB software.
• Then open Simulink in MATLAB to perform simulation of short
transmission line.
• We need three phase sources as sending end voltage source.
• Then we use voltage measurement block to measure voltage
and current.
• We use three phase series RLC branch as transmission line
with zero capacitance value.
• And we also need three phase loads to measure parameters
such as real power, apparent power and reactive power across
receiving end.
• Then we make observation table of simulation results.

Conclusion
In this experiment, we study and analyze the short-
term transmission line on MATLAB. Through this experiment we have
learned that how to study and analyze the short-term transmission
line, which is very important in our country.
