REAP SPEECH

Tom Bodett once said, “In school , were Taught a lesson and then given a test, but in life we are
given a test that teaches as the lesson,

Good morning fellow Shalars and Titans of DepEd Region Vi. I am Joy Grace O. Jara, teacher III
from the Division of Bago City.

School Heads Academy is committed to train future champion school heads. The eagerness to
stretch resources local and international is tangible just to provide the best inputs to all Shalars. The grit
and the wisdom of the Proponent Dr. Ramir Uyteco, the engagement of both Regional and Division
technical Working group, and the outsourcing of the division in charge for the free training and
education of the Shalars are very commendable. The remarkable response of the Shalars through the
RE-ENTRY Project is indeed a solid proof or the ROI of the variety of lessons learned in SHA. Being one of
the Shalars is a life changing opportunity. It is a leaping step in gaining knowledge, skills and in
transforming perspective and rebirthing dreams and aspirations.

My journey as Shalar is full of bumps, curves and roughs road. The process of squeezing and
the twisting my mental, physical and character shaped me towards the completion of my re-entry
project. My personal ability to shake off all the baggage that is hindering my goal to implement my REAP
was being tested. The financial burden did not stop me in pursuing because the project is not about me
but it is about these teachers trying to cope with the huge changes that has been brought by the
pandemic. The new normal has dragged so much technology gap currently exists in
schools of the Philippines that is preventing its teachers from enjoying the advantages
provided by technology. That is why the E-Tudlo was born. The E-Tudlo project aims to
enhance the ability and the skills of the teachers to adapt the challenging world of ICT
and how to use them as an advantage and a weapon to continuously do the task to educate
learners despite the distance. The objectives formulated for the success of the project is a
product of not just hard work but the strong will to implement it despite doing so much
just to acquire financial aid. The AITF protocol that only 5 people are allowed to conduct
meeting in a room, challenge the plan of face to face hands-on training and the birthing of
another problem which is to conduct it virtually yet our barangay school has a very
limited source of internet from a Point-to-Point service provider. The unavailability of
ICT expert trainers up to the point that my husband who is the school ICT Coordinator
and I decided to do the research and capacitate ourselves and be the trainers but I guess
the teachers deserve the best. The provision of 3 day food for snacks and lunch is also
costly. With all this major challenges that I have to face the motivation I have that I
learned from SHA is the challenge of Dr. Ramir Uyteco – “think outside the box’.

Thinking outside the box isknowing what your box is all about. By knowing every
side of the box the top, bottom, front, back and side to side will give you an idea on how
to break it. In breaking it,. first break your ego, be selfless because we are called to serve
and in serving we are empowered with physical, emotional, spiritual and mental skills.
That this self and this body are structured beautifully and comprehensively for a greater
purpose and that is to serve humanity. That is why we are called teachers. We are called
leaders. Second, change your mindset. Do not settle for less because you can do more.
You are empowered. You are in a situation because God knows you are able. Do not
poison your mind on mediocrity because the scripture foretold that God’s plan for you is
to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you hope and a future. Third, have the right
attitude. By having the right attitude matters in all circumstances. The attitude of being
resilient, humble, forgiving and passionate. Along the way you come across all the
negativity, gossips and insults just be resilient, be humble enough to accept your flaws
and limitations and learn from it. Be forgiving to those whom you look upon for refuge
yet reject you along the way. Be passionate to pursue no matter what so long it is for the
good of all for in the end the final judgement does not belong here but for eternity.

I have these 3 weapons for the completion of my REAP. The breaking of my

EGO, a change mindset; and the right attitude. My experience of selling cakes and other
illonggo delicacies to my fellow teachers and on the streets of Bago City, specifically in
Bantayan Park to have funds for the installation of the internet connectivity in school,
discussing my project to family and relatives for possible donation of foods for 3 days
training and the courage to presents my project to Carlos Hillado Memorial State
University Program Chair for partnership are not the usual me. It is all because of the
SHA principle that fueled me to do more, to be more resourceful and became selfless. It
taught me that IF THERE IS A STRONG DETERMINATION, EVERYTHING WILL
BE DONE IN GOD’S PERFECT TIME.

My tangible actions will serve as a living legacy for my colleagues and our
students that becoming a leader is not measured by any position nor passing the principal
test but by empowering and transforming the heart of others to be at their best.

Fellow Shallars, we are now on the right track, let us all keep the flame of the true
leaders to radiate in us para sa MATAGTAG na Bansang Makabata, Batang Makabansa.
