QUESTION 2

Daily demands for seafood pizzas at a bakery shop are given in the table below.

Demand per day 10 11 12 13

Probability 0.2 0.4 0.3 0.1

The pizzas are sold at RM30 each. If the pizzas are not sold on the same day, it can be sold
at a discounted price of RM15 to a customer. The cost of a pizza is RM20. If the shop tends
to stock at a level of 10, 11, 12, or 13 pizzas, what is the optimal stock level? Justify your
answer with appropriate calculations.

PART B

QUESTION 1

Sofyan is thinking about producing a new product for his company. If the market were
favorable, he would get a return of RM100,000, but if the market were unfavorable he would
lose RM40,000. He estimates that the probability of a successful market is 0.5.

Sofyan also considering doing a survey to gather additional information about the market. The
cost of the survey is RM4,000. Furthermore, the revised probability for a favorable market
given the survey result is positive is 0.73. The probability of a favorable market given that the
survey result is negative is 0.22. The probability that the survey will result in a positive market
is 0.55.

a) Draw a decision tree to represent the above problem.

(5 marks)

b) Determine the optimal decision that Sofyan should make.

(8 marks)

c) Compute the expected value of sample information and explain the value obtained.

QUESTION 2

a) A company makes two products, P and Q using two machines, A and B. Each unit of P
that is produced requires 50 minutes of processing time on machine A and 30 minutes of
processing time on machine B. Each unit of Q produced requires 24 minutes of processing
time on machine A and 33 minutes of processing time on machine B. Machine A will be
available for 40 hours and machine B will be available for 35 hours. The profit per unit of
P is RM25, while the etermine
the production quantity of each product in such a way that the total profit is maximized
while the available resources should not be exceeded.

Formulate the above problem as a linear programming model.

QUESTION 4

A fast-food restaurant currently has one drive-in teller window. Cars arrive at a mean rate of
10 per hour. The average service time is 5 minutes per car. Arrivals tend to follow a Poison
distribution and service time tends to be exponential. The fixed cost for providing one drive-in
teller window is RM5 per hour. The manager estimates that the cost of customer waiting in
line is RM2 per hour.

a) Calculate the average time (in minutes) a customer has to wait before being served.

(3 marks)

b) If you were to drive up to the facility, how many cars would you expect to see waiting to be
served?
(2 marks)

c) To improve its customer service, the manager wants to investigate the effect of a second
drive-in teller window. Assume a mean arrival rate of 10 cars per hour. In addition, assume
a mean service rate of 12 cars per hour for each window.

i) Find the total hourly cost borne by the company to operate 1 drive-in teller window
and 2 drive-in teller windows.

QUESTION 5

The manager of a bank is concerned about the waiting lines forming in front of the two tellers.
The bank consists of a single line system with two servers.

The time between arrivals of customers follows the following probability distribution.

Inter arrival time (Minutes) Probability

1.0 0.1
1.5 0.1
2.0 0.2
2.5 0.3
3.0 0.3

The probability distribution for teller service times is as follows.

Service time (Minutes) Probability

3.0 0.2
4.0 0.3
5.0 0.3
6.0 0.2

Assume that the second teller serves as a backup teller. In other words, the customers are
always assigned to the first teller unless he or she is occupied with another customer. The
second teller has other responsibilities; however, if the teller is needed by a customer, he or
she will stop and assist the customer.

a) Perform a simulation for 10 arrivals of customers. Use the following random numbers for
the time between arrivals and service time. Assume that the bank teller start work at zero
time and the first customer arrives sometime later.

Time between arrivals : 68 77 17 62 06 89 78 96 48 65

Service time : 67 46 95 80 78 39 06 09 82 59

b) Calculate the average waiting time per customer.
