Calc 7.2 Packet

1. Derivatives can be used to verify that a function is a solution to a given differential equation. This involves substituting the function into the original differential equation to show that it satisfies it. 2. Examples are given of finding the particular solution to differential equations given an initial condition, like finding the equation of a curve with a known slope at a given point. 3. Questions are provided as practice problems to find particular solutions that satisfy given differential equations and initial conditions, or to find the value of a constant that would make a given function a solution.

and thoughts here!
Derivatives can be used to verify that a function is a solution to a given differential equation.

We already covered some of this in lesson 6.8, where we found particular solutions. Let’s remind
ourselves what we did.

1. If 𝑒 2𝑥 , find the particular solution of 𝑦 if 𝑦 0 4.

2. This problem is exactly the same. A curve has a slope of 𝑒 2𝑥 at each point 𝑥, 𝑦 on the
curve. What is an equation for this curve if it passes through the point 0, 4 ?
This is the same as problem #1.

3. If 1 2𝑥 , find the particular solution of 𝑦 if 𝑦 1 and 𝑦 1 0.
