Problem Set No. 2
ME 406
Midterm Class, AY 2022

Name:Razon,Raymond C. Score:
Section: EE-3309 Date: 08/04/22

Solve the following problems completely and neatly. Write the solution on separate sheets.
Rounding off should be done only on the final answer and accurate to three decimal places. Box
the final answer. No solution, incomplete solution, or wrong solution means wrong answer. Use
1x1 inch invisible margin. Kindly check also the rubric for problem solving.
1. A sector gate, of radius 4 m and length 5m, controls the flow of water in a horizontal channel. For
the (equilibrium) conditions shown in Figure, determine the total thrust on the gate.

2. The dam in the figure is a quarter circle 50 m wide into the paper. Determine the horizontal and
vertical components of the hydrostatic force against the dam and the point CP where the resultant
strikes the dam.

3. A 60-cm square gate (a = 0.6) has its top edge 12 m below the water surface. It is on a 45-degree
angle and its bottom edge is hinged as shown in Figure. What force P is needed to just open the
gate?

4. Water is flowing at a rate of 2 cubic meter /s through a tube with a diameter of 1m. If the
pressure at this point is 80kPa, what is the pressure of the water after the tube narrows to a
diameter of 0.5m?

5. A liquid flows through a pipe with a diameter of 10cm at a velocity of 9cm/s. If the
diameter of the pipe then decreases to 6cm, what is the new velocity of the liquid?

6. Which will produce the greatest increase in flow velocity through a tube?

7. As water is traveling from a water tower, to somone's home, the pipes it travels in frequently
changesize. Water is traveling at 5m/s in a tube with a diameter of 0.5m. The tube gradually
increases in size to a diameter of 1.5m, and then gradually decreases to a diameter of 1m.
Neglecting any energy losses due to friction and pressure changes, what is the speed of the
water when it reaches the tube diameter of 1m?

8. A pump draws water from a reservoir A and lifts it to reservoir B as shown in the figure. The
loss of head from A to section 1 is 20 times the velocity head in the 15cm pipe and the total loss
of head from section 2 to B is 3 times the velocity head in the 10 cm pipe. Compute the power
input of the pump assuming it operates at 80 percent efficiency. The discharge in the system is
15 liters per second.

9. A jet of water from a nozzle discharging into air has a diameter of 15cm and a mean velocity of 4o m/s .
Compute the velocity head and the power in the jet.

10. If a pipe with flowing water has a cross-sectional area nine times greater at point 2 than at point 1,
what would be the relation of flow speed at the two points? Explain your answer
