The document provides a detailed lesson plan for teaching 9th grade students about the Pythagorean theorem. The objectives are for students to derive the theorem, solve problems using it, and show enthusiasm for the topic. The plan outlines learning strategies like lecture, discussion, and problem-solving practice. It includes examples of using the formula to find missing sides of right triangles. Students complete an activity to apply their skills and their understanding is evaluated through additional problems.

III. LEARNING STRATEGIES

Teacher’s Activity Learner’s Activity
A. Preparation (5 minutes)

Good morning class! Good morning, Ma’am!

How are you today? We are fine Ma’am.
Nice, that’s good to hear.

Okay class before we start for our new lesson

today, let us pray first.
Who will lead the prayer? Any volunteer? Me Ma’am!
Okay, lead the prayer. Prayer…
Amen. Okay! Once again good morning class!

Who is absent today? None Ma’am.

That’s good to hear, all of you are present
today.

Okay class, let’s have first a recap before we

move to our new lesson.

What was our topic yesterday?

Different kinds of triangle Ma’am.

Very good!
Our topic yesterday is about triangles.

So now give me an example of triangles.

Acute and Obtuse triangle Ma’am!
Very good class!

Now let us move on to the third types of a

triangle.

The Right triangle

Do you have an idea about a right triangle

class? Have you heard it before? No Ma’am…

That’s okay class.

B. Motivation (3 minutes)

Before we proceed to our discussion, let’s

have a game first called “Arrange Me”.

Instruction:
Through the given link in the chat box, open
the link, type your name and click start to
proceed. Do it as fast as you can class.
You only have 2 minutes to do that activity.

Arrange Words:
Theorem
Right
Triangle
Pythagorean
Legs
C. Presentation (5 minutes)
Okay, from the arrange words that you have
formed class,
Do you have now an idea of our topic/lesson Pythagorean Theorem Ma’am.
for today?

Yes! Very good!

It’s all about Pythagorean Theorem.

Pythagorean Theorem is a relationship

between the sides of a right triangle. A right
triangle is any triangle that has one right
internal angle measuring 90 0.

In a right triangle, the hypotenuse is the

longest side of the triangle and always the
opposite of a right angle. The remaining sides
are what we called the legs.

Example:
In ∆ ABC , name the hypotenuse and the legs.

B C

Hypotenuse - AC
Legs - AB and BC
E. Discussion Proper (15 minutes)

Pythagoras is the proponent of Pythagorean

Theorem. He also stated that in a right triangle
the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the
squares of two legs. That statement implies.

c - (hypotenuse)
b - (leg)

a - (leg)

2 2 2
a +b ¿c
The Pythagorean only applies to a right
triangle only.

Let’s try some examples

Given: a = 6, b = 8, c = ?

Using the formula of Pythagorean Theorem:

a 2+ b2=c 2
2 2 2
6 +8 =c
2
36+64=c
2
100=c
√ 100= √c 2
c=10

What if one leg of a triangle is missing?

In that case, we derive the formula:
2 2 2
a + b =c (getting one leg)
2 2 2
b =c -a

Let’s have an example:

3

b
5

Given: a = 3, b = ?, c = 5
2 2 2
b =c - a
b=√ 52 - 32
b=√ 25- 9
b=√ 16
b=4

Any questions? Clarifications? None Ma’am.

If there is none then solve this following Noted Ma’am.

example to check if you really understand the
lesson. I’ll give you 5 minutes to solve it.

1.) 6 2 2 2
b =c −a
b=√ 6 - 4
2 2

b
b=√ 36 -16
b=√ 20
4
b=2 √ 5
Given: a = 4, b = ?, c = 6

2 2 2
z =x + y
2
z=√ 2 +3
2 2
2.)
z=√ 4 +9
3
z z=√ 13

Given: x = 2, y = 3, z = ?

Well done, everyone.

F. Application (20 minutes)
Since, you already know how to solve
Pythagorean Theorem by using its formula.

Now, let’s apply the Pythagorean Theorem to

problem solving.

Problem 1.
A 4meter ladder is 2meter from the base of a
building. How high up does the ladder reach?

c = 4m b=2 √3 m or 3.46m
b=?

a = 2m
Very good!
b=√ (4 m) -(2 m)
2 2

How did you obtain the answer?

b=√ 16 m2 - 4 m2
b=√ 12m 2
b=2 √ 3 m∨3.46 m

Very good class!

Activity:
Write the corresponding letter of the item on
the space provided at the top of your
calculated answer. You have 10 minutes to do
it. I will give the link where you must enter
your name first before you proceed and
answer those following questions with
Yes Ma’am!
corresponding letter. Jot down your answers
together with letter of each item to fill the
empty box below.

The following are all right triangles:

1. c = 6, a= 3, what is the value of b? (S)
2. c= 10, a= 3, what is the value of b? (P)
3. b= 12, a= 5, what is the value of c? (H)
4. c= 13, a= 5, find the value of b? (O)
5. a= 9, b= 12, what is the value of c?(A)
6. c=10, b= 8, what is the value of a? (G)
7. b= 9, c= 11, what is the value of a?(T)
8. a= 10, c= 11, what is the value of b?(R)
9. c= 20, a= 12, what is the value of b?(Y)
10. a= 3, b= 4, what is the value of c?(A)
P Y T H A G O R A S
√ 91 16
2 √10 13 15 6 12
√ 21 5 3√3
√ 91 16
2 √ 10 13 15 6 12
√ 21 5
3 √3
G. Generalization (2 minutes)

Now, let’s have a quick review of our lesson. (Raising their hands)

What is our topic again? Ma’am! our topic for today is all about
Pythagorean Theorem and how to find the
missing leg of the right triangle.

Very good!
How about our formula? Ma’am! a 2+ b2=c 2
Very well!
Ma’am, first step is found what are given. Next,
What are the steps to solve the problem using find what is/are the missing leg/s. Lastly,
the formula? substitute the given on the formula and solve it.

Very Good class, you’ve really understood our

lesson today.

IV. EVALUATION (10 minutes)

Solve the following problems using the Pythagorean Theorem.
1. Ronald left his house and walked 6 km due east and then 8 km due north. How far is he from
the starting point?
2. Find the width of the rectangle whose diagonal is 12 cm long and whose base is 4√ 5 cm
