HOW TO PRODUCE ODURLESS MAGGOTS FOR LIVESTOCK FEEDING*

Maggots is a wonderful supplement for feeding of animals like fish,

poultry, e.t.c, it's a good source of protein and drastically reduces

one's cost of production.

PRODUCTION PROCESS: first a plastic container with opening is

needed, if you wish to get so much maggots, then get a bigger

container.

Pour in any of the following (non smelling) materials ... rice ban,

wheat offal, pkc, maize, chaff from akamu, cassava chaff, these

materials will serve as bedding for the flies to lay their eggs, the

container with the materials inside is to be kept in a place devoid of

distractions.

Get some quantity of sugar mixed with Water and allow the mixture

to for 24 hours, cover the mixture and keep in a cool dry place
After keeping the container in an isolated place, mix the sugar

mixture with the material earlier choosed, ensure that you don't add

excess water to the material to avoid being waterlogged

Next, ensure you sprinkle water daily on the material to ensure it is

in a mesh form, don't allow it to be dry or you will end up having

little or no flies, THEN you will notice lots of flies around the plastic

container especially after 3 days.

FROM THE FIFTH DAY, lots of white substances will be seen at

different part inside the mesh mixture, those substances are eggs of

the flies, when you notice this, close up the part of the container that

is open with a mosquito net to avoid any other thing going in or out

of the container, at this point remember that you should continue to

sprinkle water.

NOTE ... By day 6, maggots of very small size will form, to make them

look big, sprinkle little baker's yeast on them it helps them grow

much bigger in size

VERY IMPORTANT ... REMEMBER THAT THE CONTAINER MUST BE

KEPT IN A COOL DRY PLACE, this can be done by keeping it under a

shade like under a plantain or banana tree, having so much heat on

the container can disrupt the whole process

HARVESTING YOUR ODURLESS MAGGOTS ... Depending on the size

of animal you wish to feed, you can start harvesting from day 7 - 12,

maggots usually stay under the mixture material, so to harvest them,

get a different container containing salt warm water, use a Parker to

remove the first layer of the mixture material, then pour the

remaining into the container containing the salt warm water, the

maggots will float and you make your harvest.

FINALLY ... You can feed your animals with the live maggots or you

sun dry them, grind them and mix in your feed as an alternative to

soya bean especially now that soyabeans is becoming expensive,

maggots will help give you a more quality feed at reduced cost
2. HOW TO PRODUCE SOME FEED INGREDIENTS

A. Soybean meal (SBM)

You start the process by ensuring that you remove all the dirt from

the soyabean seed, then you toast the soyabean well to eliminate or

remove toxins. Toasting the soyabeans improves the Palatability and

digestibility of the feed.

Then grind the soyabeans to a good powdered form.

2.2. Groundnut cake (kulikuli)

This is better than the normal groundnut since it has less and high

protein content. This can

Easily be obtained in the market. Ensure it is in the powdered form

(fine) or, you should pound

It.
B. Bonemeal

You can prepare the bloodmeal by yourself following these Steps;

Use knife to scrap all the fat and meat from the body of the bone,

Bake the bone until it becomes dry and fragile, Ground or pound the

bone until it attains fine texture

Note: although, bone are easier to handle but beef bone is better
3.0. FEED FORMULA FOR NON CONVENTIONAL FEED INGREDIENTS

INTRODUCTION

Poultry production by experience is capital intensive and can be

quite expensive, this has led to the shutdown of some poultry

business while some many are afraid to start as they are uncertain

about making profit from the business. Chicken feed accounts

For more than 70% of the cost of production in poultry production,

learning how to make your own feed will greatly Increase your profit

margin.

I found out that many persons find it difficult to compound their feed

due to lack of additives, Weighing instruments and how to interpret

formula for mixing feeds.

Sometimes beginners fail in poultry production and sell their birds at

cheaper rate when they run out of cash, but in this book, you will

learn how to mix their feed and get good results.

Another reason why some farmers fail is that some resort to mixing

feed without proper mixing schedule.

This formula is based on the use of non-conventional feeding

redients like maize offal, millet Offal and groundnut cake (kulikuli)

which are cheap and easy to access. This formular is not for

the big farms with financial strengths but beginners who may run out

of cash while trying to feed their birds.

3.1. Starter

Feed formular for 100kg

Soybean meal = 20kg

Groundnut cake = 11kg

Fishmeal = 3kg

Maize offal = 40kg

Millets offal = 26kg

Bone meal = 3kg

Salt = 0.3kg
Feed formula for 25kg bag

Note: remember that most commercial feeds are in 25kg bag

Soybean meal = 5kg

Groundnut cake = 2.75kg

Fishmeal = 0.75kg

Maize offal = 10kg

Millet offal = 6.5kg

Bonemeal = 0.75kg

Salt = 0.075kg

Feed formula in mudu

Note: there are about 20 mudus in 25kg bag and 8 tin cups in a

mudu. Based on this the formula

Can be re-written as;

Soybean meal = 4mudu

Groundnut cake (kulikuli) = 2 mudu and 2 cups

Fishmeal = ½ mudu

Maize offal = 8mudu

Millet offal = 5 mudu and 2 cups

3.2. Finisher diet

Feed formula in 100kg

Soybean meal = 13kg

Groundnut cake (kulikuli) = 7kg

Fishmeal = 2kg

Maize offal = 47kg

Millet offal = 31kg

Bonemeal = 3kg

Salt = 0.3kg

Feed formula in 25kg

Soybean meal = 3.25kg

Kulikuli = 1.75kg

Fishmeal = 0.5kg

Maize offal = 11.75kg

Millet offal = 7.75kg

Bone meal = 0.75kg

Salt = 0.075kg

Feed formula in mudu

Soybean meal = 2 muduand5cups

Groundnut cake (kulikuli) = 1muduand3cups

Fishmeal = 3cups

Maize offal = 9 muduand3cups

Millet offal = 6 muduand2cups

Bone meal = 1 mudu

Salt = ½cup

PRECAUTIONS

Ensure you clean the feeder thoroughly before adding feed, leaving

Remnants on the feeder can result to fungi infection.

It is advisable you feed your birds with commercial feeds in the first

three weeks because Of some necessary additives in commercial

feed which may not be in yours locally produced feed e.g enzymes

And toxin binders.

Ensure your feed is not mouldy before feeding them,

Add little quantity of sand to your feed as this will be needed in the

crop of birds for easy digestion, Birds eat to satisfy their protein

requirement, if what you feed them does not satisfy them,

Then you may need to add mire quantity of legumes

Ensure you add multi-vitamin to their water if you are compounding

feed by yourself.
