• They allow us to express different

and convey our attitudes towards
what we are saying.

• They help to clarify what is really
being meant by the main verb.
WHAT ARE MODAL VERBS?
• Modal verbs are a type of auxiliary verb in English
• They express a range of different meanings,
such as possibility, necessity, ability, permission,
obligation, and advice
• They modify the meaning of the main verb in a sentence,
indicating how the speaker feels about the action.
• For example, "I can play the guitar"
• suggests that the speaker has the ability to play the guitar, while
• "I must finish this report"
• suggests that the speaker is obligated to finish the report.
HOW TO USE MODAL VERBS IN DAILY LIFE?

1. Giving and receiving directions:


• Modal verbs like "can," "could," and "may" can be used to
• indicate the possibility
taking a certain route or making a turn.
• For example,
• "You could take a left turn at the next intersection" suggests a possible route.
2. Negotiating and making agreements:
• Modal verbs like "should," "must," and "will" can be used to negotiate
and make agreements with others.
• For example, "We should work together on this project" suggests cooperation,
• while "We must agree on the terms before signing the contract" indicates a requirement.

ABILITY MODAL VERB

• These Modal Verbs use we are able to do something or not.


• Can" and "could" are like magic words are Ability M.V
• Examples,
• if you ask "Can I have a cookie?“
and I say "Yes, you can,
• " that means you are allowed to have a cookie.
• Paul could speak Chinese when he was a child
• Jackie cannot play piano..
PERMISSION MODAL VERB
• A modal of permission is a type of auxiliary verb that is used to ask
for or give permission
• Example:
• Can I ask a question?
• Could I borrow your book?
• May I come in?
• Were you allowed to stay up late when you were a child?
• You can use our resources for free.
• You may leave now.
• Many years ago you could smoke in cinemas, but now it’s banned.
• Passengers must not speak to the driver while the bus is in motion.
• He couldn’t sit down during the lesson.
ADVICE MODAL VERB
• Modals of advice are a type of modal verbs used mainly to give
ask for advice.
• They are should, ought to, why don't you? , How about? and had
better
• Had better is also widely used, but we call it a modal-like
expression instead of a modal verb.
• They should start getting ready to go because the bus leaves at
4:00.
• It's really cold outside. You ought to wear a warm jacket.
• You could take private lessons.•
• Why don't you go to bed earlier?
• How about going on a diet?
• •How about trying yoga?
• You had better slow down. You are driving too fast!
NECESSITY MODAL VERB
• Necessity modals add a degree of recommendation to an action.
• Examples
• The kids must drink water every day.
• The modal is "must" It is placed before the verb "drink" and
indicate a strong recommendation that kids drink water every
day.
• My students should do their homework every night
• The modal is "should". It is before the verb "do"
• and indicates a weak recommendation that students do their
homework every night.
POSSIBILITY MODAL VERB

• Modals of possibility show that something is possible now.


• They can also show that something might happen in the future
• .Modals of possibility include might , could and may.
• These modals all have the meaning of "possible" and "maybe"
• Might and could are very common.
• May is more formal and not used as often.
• Examples
• Alia might go to the Party. Juan could be late.
They may buy a new car.
• They might attend the awards ceremony tomorrow night.
• He could call you back tonight.
HABIT MODAL VERB
• To show an ongoing or habitual action
• something the subject does regularly—
• you can use the modal verb would for the past
tense and will for the present and future.
• The phrase used to is also acceptable when you’re
talking about a habit in the past.
• Example
• When I lived alone, I would fall asleep with music.
• I will arrive early to every meeting and leave late.
• We used to go camping every summer with our
friends.
• She will often read a book before going to bed.
REQUEST MODAL VERB

• When you want to ask someone else to do


something,
start your question with
will, May,would, can, or could
• Examples
• Would you get that box off the top shelf?
• Can you please pass me the salt?
• Could I ask you a question?
• May I use your phone?
• Will you please turn off the lights?
